chinkamon Posted March 26, 2016 Report Posted March 26, 2016 Hi all Just before I go ahead with something I thought I'd ask your fine opinions again So traffics ever getting worse an I'm aware non moving traffic = hot engine so I'm getting an electric stat controlled fan same type as I had on my v8 truck ( not quite as manly tho!) Thing is it won't fit in front of the rad ( and it is the slimmest onr i can find) so I'll have to put it 'sucking' air through on the back of the rad but have to remove the original fan on the engine for it to fit. Only downside is it'll be on more as it'll be the only cooling aid Any other problems I haven't realised? Or will it be ok?
colr6 Posted March 26, 2016 Report Posted March 26, 2016 There an improvement over standard fan which runs all the time especially if yours is still on I think a two blade fan. Should give a quicker warm up time in winter and pull more air through in summer to cool. Some of the cheap fans on eBay are crap best probably buying a reputable brand or has anyone got a suggestion other than the likes of kenlowe or you could even get one from the breakers and fit a thermostatic control to it
katana Posted March 27, 2016 Report Posted March 27, 2016 Once over 10 - 15mph the fan does little in the way of cooling. Modern cars seem to survive happily with just leccy fans and generally smaller rads.
skeeter Posted March 27, 2016 Report Posted March 27, 2016 I had a similar issue in mine which was still running the original 2 bladed fan. I swapped this for a modern multi bladed fan and my overheating issues in traffic was cured. Might be worth a try and much easier than fitting an electric fan.
Admin Vista Posted March 27, 2016 Admin Report Posted March 27, 2016 If you do go for an electric fan upgrade, nake sure you fit the right type for your intended location behind the rad. Fan blades are generally designed as either suckers or blowers and obviously you want the former.
deltamal Posted March 27, 2016 Report Posted March 27, 2016 As said, get a good quality fan, I use twin Kenlow 9" fans on my 2.9 Cologne with no problems, tried an ebay cheapy on my estate, waste of money! it gave up after 3 months! 1

If you have the space in front of the radiator, 'blow' has the advantage of leaving more space in the engine bay and uses 'dead space' behind the front grille - at least in a Cortina, I'm assuming Escorts are similar.

katana Posted March 28, 2016 Report Posted March 28, 2016 Ain't a 'born again' more a 365 / year biker - I have an R6 fan on my oil cooled GSXR1460 - ain't small @ about 8" dia but helps out as the cooler is under the seat above the rear wheel!
