As the topic suggests I was just wondering of there is any real world advantage to alloy differential housings for an English axle? I see Burtons sell them. Alloy Bell housings are known to reduce noise and vibrations so just wondered the advantages that can be found in the axle? They say they are 5kgs lighter. Is it more an unsprung weight thing?

Have a new ATB and Crownwheel and pinion so its a case of just getting a left over iron one even it has blown or a new alloy one if there is any advantage to spending the extra money?

Still entertaining this idea. I much rather keep the one in the car as a backup rather than putting all new bits onto it but basically all I need is a housing. If I have a new ATB centre and Crownwheel and pinion and bearings is there anything else I am missing other than the casing that I haven't considered? As Col says the weight saving is good, the alloy ones save 5kgs so that also has to be good for unsprung weight. Bit is that good to offer any real world benefit? Is there any vibration advantages using alloy like they say with Bell housings? These housings are terribly expensive though so it has to justify itself.

It’s rather a lot of cash to splash out on something that I don’t think you would notice one single benefit from purchasing. Certainly not on the application your putting it to, normal road use.  Don’t forget you’d need a pinion seal, Nut, crush washer and a prop flange.

oh yes and someone who knows how to build and set up diffs properly!

Your probably right. I haven't been able to find a good casing locally and it not something you can post. The ones I have seen were either stored in a stagnate ponds or driven on a car with no tyres over rough terrain. The irony is how many were thrown away because the internals were damaged and now all I was is the casing.

I think I have the crush washer, is that a metal tube with a bulge in the middle?

Oh thats ok then. It was in the packet with the bearing. A mouse has eaten a hole in it though.

There is a place there i the UK that has a new original English housing but its just as expensive as the alloy ones but at least it has the originality factor. Postage would be a killer though, it would weigh alot wouldn't it?

From memory a full diff comes in at about 17kg would estimate a case to come in at 7kg

Thats a fair bit. I can only ask and see how much it would cost to ship, maybe even save on VAT since im not in the UK. That may help cover the cost of the postage

Just replied to your asking me about the rear axle on another thread not to be cheeky to anyone on here but 5kg saving i bet most of our cars have double or more that weight in filler and replacement metal i know mine probably has,

I would do as someone suggested keep your hard earned cash if its a road car it won't make a blind bit of difference :)

Ok that idea is officially dead! The ironic part is that all the cast casings have been thrown away because the centres have blown so cant seem to find one within pick up distance as its not something anyone likes to post.

Oh, even better drive up the way! haha. Yes I've a few friends in OZ and they're happy to keep me up to date with how hot it is. lol

Have you tried running the car without the thermostat? That's what I'd try in the heat you getting! We usually ran the rally cars without in the summer, back in the day.

It was the year of my life, loved it and never seen or had a bit of bother.

No I haven't done that although it may be an interim solution but it should never need to do that even on the hottest of days. I have driven the car to Queensland and Victoria many times even across the desert with only a tiny bit of overheating after I drove through a swarm of locusts but fine again when I stopped an plucked all their bodies out of the radiator. This time its different in that its something I have replaced that is faulty so its a shame having to replace everything again in less than a year just to find out what.

Yes I agree, you should't need to. But often when you need to replace parts of the cooling system, you dislodge bits of crap, and they keep finding their way back to the thermostat. So a few trips out without the Stat, a flush, a run, and then new fluid, new Stat.

You'll soon know, if it runs good without the Stat, then it's just crap jamming it!

Also agree with what others have said RE the alloy casing not being worth the money for road use.

Re the one in Queensland, would they package and let you arrange your own courier to collect?

Thats exactly how I feel after visiting the Computer store. I wasn't expecting it would cost so much but it was all I could get with an older operating system on it. I hate Windows 10 spyware. What really cuts is the new one has less capacity and less ports than the old one which Im still chatting to you on right now. You can still surf the net with it but try getting all my old files off it before it dies the thing just seizes It doesn't have my life left. Its really quite stressful when you think you going t loose a whole hap of stuff. Your supposed to be thrilled when making a new purchase by I just feel totally shafted from the whole business actually. The guy laughed at me when I told him that computers should last as long as cars, and he said they do about 5 years and I said no try 30 plus thankyou very much.
