I wasn't expecting it would cost so much but it was all I could get with an older operating system on it. I hate Windows 10 spyware. What really cuts is the new one has less capacity and less ports than the old one which Im still chatting to you on right now. You can still surf the net with it but try getting all my old files off it before it dies the thing just seizes It doesn't have my life left. Its really quite stressful when you think you going t loose a whole hap of stuff. Your supposed to be thrilled when making a new purchase by I just feel totally shafted from the whole business actually. The guy laughed at me when I told him that computers should last as long as cars, and he said they do about 5 years and I said no try 30 plus thankyou very much. I have an 11 year old laptop and desktop at home (windows vista, apt eh?) that I am avoiding booting up for fear of them crapping out and losing all the files saved on them. Like you though, I am reluctant to stump up for a new one!
katana Posted February 7, 2019 Report Posted February 7, 2019 Typing this on my trusty Dell Inspiron 2200 that I got for Mapping as the Motec still runs DOS - it came with Win 98SE ! ! ! but have Win XP pro and it's as stable as you like - better than Win 7 but hasn't got the RAM to run 7 AND do anything else LOL!

The old computer is undergoing a CHKDSK scan at the moment, its been going to over 14 hours. Sometimes I think its frozen for hours at the one spot but then it comes up with another error fix so as long as its moving I have just let it go. Its two thirds through so I think its working and will be going the rest of today. The new computer is one of those paper thin metal lid fancy things. It even has a fingerprint scanner but not sure what that does yet. In no way did I need a fancy job like this but it was the only one still with Windows 7 Pro loaded. I hate Windows 10 and the older operating system just works for me. You can't buy Windows 7 Keys any more. It was my intention to use a cheaper laptop and reload Windows 7 Pro but unless I do it with a pirate version it cant be done. They did have this wiz bang expensive one but for some bizarre reason with the discontinued operating system in it. I asked why have such a modern computer with an outdated operating system in it and his reply was a polite. Its for hold outs like me that refuse to change. Its the highest generation of computer ever run by Windows 7 so I figure it should give me a few years to learn a Linux based operating system so I never have to go to the spyware that is windows 10. So the move over to this computer is not as painful as it could have been but even though Im using the exact same operating system it still does things differently. I cant seem to add a proper English dictionary to the spell check just the American one so I may get condoms instead of pencil erasers if I order rubbers online.

Yeah CHKDSK can be scary at times and if the disc is near capacity or has a lot of runtime without 'maintenance', it can take days! Regular Defrag is also worthwhile - I did my work PC just before xmas break and I don't think it had ever been done and it took 8 odd hrs - now its minutes. Fingerprint scanner you say.....................I guess it scans your fingerprint! V. clever! Seriously its biometric security - saves remembering passwords etc just scan and go. I think it can encrypt files with the print as the key - great for James Bond, bit ott for saving a bank statement of so LOL! You still can get win 7 original discs with a key but they are OEM installer disc so your PC maybe an HP, the software will call it a Dell, works just the same....... my copy of 7 Pro cost £35 18 months ago and only got that due to some forums / website protocols not supporting XP anymore. The spell checker is irritating but its all you'll get, don't forget the US educated the world whilst beating it into submission with military might! 1

Its been over a day now and CHKDSK is still running. Its only showing 16% but its 80% through the repair cluster process thats taken all but the first ten minutes of this whole business. Im hoping the last stage 5 will wiz through when it finally gets there. I can't believe its good to run a dying HDD for a day or two straight without a break however. In fairness I have never run this before as my anti virus software would always prevent it. I had to delete that to do the check.

CHKDSK has basically hung now at the same spot for 16 hours. I was happy to let it go if it clocked over every now and then but not like this. Will I likely cause more damage pulling the plug and trying a hard reboot do you think?
Snapper Posted February 9, 2019 Report Posted February 9, 2019 Tins of Slimfast and you’ll save 5Kg for little money and feel better at the same time. weight saving on a heavy car needs to be everywhere not just 1 bit, alloy hubs, alloy engine etc. etc. etc.

If it was me - and it has been in the past - you could either get a USB storage drive (bigger than the duff drive) restart the machine, connect the external drive and transfer EVERYTHING you want to keep immediately before seeing if anything else is working or going online. Alternatively remove the duff drive, load it into a drive caddy (these can be either USB or SATA connected) or if the duff drive is SATA you may be able to connect it to the new laptop via an external port (they are getting common on newer pc's and laptops) but will probably need a power source. If it were a PC i'd just connect it and use it as a slave drive - it would be the fastest transfer possible if mechanical lifespan of the drive is short! 1

I tried rebooting not long ago and its officially dead. SKNDSK is supposed to fix errors but it basically destroyed what little life it had left. At least before I could start it up normally and transfer a few files over before it froze not it wont even boot up. I just should have kept doing what I was before but I scheduled a scan thinking it would help and only take a few mins. Now its all dead. I'm really disappointed to have lost so much. Everything was backed up to a drive but it was faulty from the box. It accepted all my files but when I try get them back it freezes too. So I lost the other half with this drive failure. I could have gotten everything off if it wasn't for windows on fix. Warning to everyone if your drive is freezing and about to fail don't use SKNDSK thinking it will fix the problem. It will just kill off any life left. My last resort now is to take the drive out and put it in an external casing and see if I can retrieve anything. But I doubt it.
