I'm wondering whether anybody has removed the outer skin from a boot to leave just the structural frame intact.

The same process could possibly be implemented to remove the skin from a bonnet perhaps?

I've just bought this and need to graft it onto the structural shell

If so, is there anything I need to be aware of? Any tips, tricks etc. Importantly, how do I actually start!!

Alternatively, any other ideas to allow me to use the lock?

Cheers

Don't think that type of boot lid is meant to be hinged, they hook under two corner plates and then fasten with the clips. Hope your not expecting them to fit like steel panels, because they won't

Cheers Col. I'm aware of the corner fittings [clearly visible in the image are marks where the boot was held in-situ with afore mentioned clips]

It came with two thin hinges. But after speaking to the guy that makes these:

and the chap that has this rear spoiler [who bought it from fibresports]

... they both said the outer skin can be bonded to the internals of a standard steel boot

you fit those keith and you will be eligable for entry here

HAHAHAHAHA! I'm only looking to fit the rear spoiler. I think it looks quite good in the turbosport forum thread

We used to use the same fittings for the bonnets, but on a race car no one cares about them not fitting correctly here and there. Got a boot lid for the box complete with its own integrals supposed to be a race fitment purely for the weight and used orig hinges and that's all it was it was shite even after hours of filing filling it still looked shite and to be honest it wasn't cheap. It ended up in the round receptical in the corner. Have tried numerous fibreglass panels and have yet to find a suitable replacement for steel good enough to use on a well turned out road car. To me it's far better to modify a steel panel with steel to get the desired effect spoilers/ scoops/ air vents but that's me. Take the front spoiler on my box that was a sheet of steel wrapped around a length of steel then scaffold boards either side of it and compressed with an Astra van. 5 years later it's still there no cracks no fibreglass craving and it was CHEAP !

I'm not too enamored at the thought of a fibre glass boot to be honest. Especially as the rest of the car looks so good.

I've been searching for a decently competent panel beater for several months who's able to recreate the boot spoiler shown below

http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=146724

In fact, as long ago as May 26th 2014 I posed the same question, asking for a panel beater. [http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/ipb/index.php?/topic/77941-panel-beater-needed/?hl=%2Bpanel+%2Bbeater] but none materialised.

Each time I find one, I generally get a sharp intake of breath followed by the obligatory shake of the head. We never get as far as discussing cost! I thought I found one on the Irish Ford Escort forum [http://z7.invisionfree.com/CEOCI/index.php]. The chap's name is Rob who works at Crannagh Autos in Ireland. His work looks amazing but 4 emails and countless unanswered calls later I'm back to square one.

Hence the fibre glass ones

It shouldn't be too hard to make a steel ducktail spoiler if that's all you're after. Take some measurements at a show then make a frame the right size/shape (or as near as you can get it) from something like 6mm solid round bar then weld steel sheet over it. Maybe four pieces (front, back and both sides, bent to shape). Bit of filing the edges, bit of filler and decide how you're going to mount it. (I'd have a few bolts sticking out from underneath to go through the bootlid.) If you're handy with a welder and have basic bodywork skills it should be a weekend job.

I did, but by mistake. I sent a (Mk3 Cortina) steel bonnet and boot lid to SPL in Birmingham for 'dipping'. I didn't realise they were in two pieces bonded together and the dipping removed that completely. I ended up having to tack-weld them back together. :(

Colr6, I've stared at you avatar pic and I give in, where did you hide the scaffolding boards in your spoiler? It looks good for timber and steel.  :eeek:

It was formed by using 1"X1" box section then squeezed between two scaffolding boards and ran over with an Astra van. It was a new van so could say formed using modern technology ....lol
