preacherman Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 What are the differences . Just interested as recently I have seen one of each type.
preacherman Posted January 8, 2017 Author Report Posted January 8, 2017 Steel wheels versus alloys Sport seats versus fishnets Different stripes ?
DT36 Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 Have owned 2 standard with roll tops, and 1 custom. It's been a long time between owning them, but my observations were: Custom has Fishnet Recaro seats, different door cards, clock and binnacle in left of dash, centre console, RS alloys, boot carpet, remote drivers door mirror and the back panel around the rear lights was black. My current one also has a custom badge on the centre of the dash and a vinyl roof. Don't know if the roof is of any relevance though. 1
stevegav Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 I had an rs2000 20yrs ago. Have always wondered what the difference between standard and custom. Was starting to think it was flat front and nose cone ?
stevegav Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 I've recently purchased some brown fishnets. Back in the day my rs had bitter chocolate fishnets.I don't think they made many in that colour. Can't find them or any relevance to them at all.
SmokeEm Posted January 9, 2017 Report Posted January 9, 2017 Customs door cards go right to top of door and have a hold for the door lock knob to go through. Some of the other custom extras could be optioned on normal models but NOT the door cards IIRC 1
Rally Pack 2000 Posted January 10, 2017 Report Posted January 10, 2017 When new I would have opted for the custom just for the mirrors alone. With the standard cars you got one remote mirror on the drivers and a regular one on the passenger side. This doesnt sound too bad but the remote and normal mirrors are different shape. The non remote one is smaller and is a strange shape not as rectangular as the remote ones. Regular RS2000s look lopsided with the two different shaped mirrors. I always did find this weird just to save a couple of pounds and fitting them all with passenger remote mirrors as well. 1

RWL81P Posted January 10, 2017 Report Posted January 10, 2017 personally i prefer the look of the roll tops and the small door cards with paint showing at the top. gives the feel of an old car with metal on show.

Australian mirrors are completely different again and were the same shape regardless of whether they were remote or not so always had symmetry, Yes I know the Ghias have the lopsided arrangement as well. Most of the Customs I have seen have passenger remotes (must have been a popular option then) so if it wasnt the Custom that got the passenger remote as standard it must have been the X-Pack model that got both? There was certainly one model that got both. Thats what I have on my car at the moment and a brand new pair in boxes in the shed I got in the 80s for a rainy day or a wealthy arab sheik to come along and make me an offer I cant refuse. I use them cause the Australian plastic mirrors are crap.

khanlad Posted January 10, 2017 Report Posted January 10, 2017 Ive got a remote mirror on mine, it moves all the time, pain in the arse 1
colr6 Posted January 10, 2017 Report Posted January 10, 2017 Why not use Capri mirrors, they're remote both sides and look near enough the same as RS ones.
RWL81P Posted January 10, 2017 Report Posted January 10, 2017 Why not use Capri mirrors, they're remote both sides and look near enough the same as RS ones. theyre not both remote col, only drivers side same as escort mk2 and mk1 xr2.
colr6 Posted January 10, 2017 Report Posted January 10, 2017 theyre not both remote col, only drivers side same as escort mk2 and mk1 xr2. I'm sure on specific models they were both remote. Or is age overtaking me again!
RWL81P Posted January 10, 2017 Report Posted January 10, 2017 I'm sure on specific models they were both remote. Or is age overtaking me again! they may have been added by someone pal but not ford. 2.8 and the brooklands are the daddy of capris and they only have drivers side adjustable. the 70s and early 8os london taxis came with both and they were built from the ford parts bin.
crapichris Posted January 10, 2017 Report Posted January 10, 2017 Regular trade at Capri shows in the 90's and 00's was for a Dutch Capri owner, for example, to come over to a UK show with some LHD drivers mirrors and swap them for the UK the driver mirrors as only the driver mirrors were remote. UK Capri owners did the same when they travelled abroad. Probably why you've seen remote mirrors on both sides of capri's Col.

colr6 Posted January 11, 2017 Report Posted January 11, 2017 Well I had 3 remote ns mirrors and not broke any London taxis up, broke a few capris and reliant scimitars up. Also remember the only difference between Capri and mk2 escort fitment was the base mounting plastic different angles on the doors but same mirror.
YellowTaxi Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 A bit of clarification required. Yes Im a Self confessed RS2000 geek. Custom was released around Sep 78 giving two model options, The standard one (Base as its known) and the Custom. Prior to that date it was just known as an RS2000. Custom got you a drivers side remote mirror. (Different shape completely to the manual one on the nearside, finished in Black satin. Black satin painted rear panel. Body colour on the base model. Deep pile carpet. 'L' type on base model. Full height Door cards with longer door pull handle. Base had body colour on tops of doors similar to 'L' spec cars. Custom dash badge. Fishnet Recaro seats. Base had seats similar to Ghia but covered in Beta Cloth. Not Roll-tops as is widely believed. 6'' four spoke alloys with grey painted spokes . Base had 6'' steel sports wheels. Both had Pirelli CN36 175-70 13 Tyres. A boot carpet that covered the spare wheel. Base had a sort of mat instead. Tinted Windows. Centre Console. radio was an option but normally ''thrown-in by dealer'' only single speaker though. Passenger side clock housed in a little cubby hole. Many but not all of the above could be specified as options on Base model, all had dropsnoot front. a flat front factory RS2000 never existed. BEIGE was now an interior colour option so it wasnt all good. Pre 78 the RS2000 had many of the later Custom features but Green tinted glass and Scheel (Roll top) seats in black only. There was a few later minor additions and alterations but thats a brief summary of the Custom, Base differences. Incidentally Base models probably due to rarity value command very high prices these days, I suppose serious Mk2 collectors must have one in the stable. 2

colr6 Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 dont suppose you still got one lying around do you? No sorry, all that type of stuff went when we got rid of the phase going through with scimitars. A lot of the gear went over to Holland. So as was mentioned before about the Dutch bringing them over here I was sending them back!! At a profit of course, me not been into escorts at that time let them go.
RWL81P Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 seen a few come up on fleebay but as with everything with rs or mk2 escort tagged on it theyre fetching stupid money.
Rally Pack 2000 Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 Well I had 3 remote ns mirrors and not broke any London taxis up, broke a few capris and reliant scimitars up. Also remember the only difference between Capri and mk2 escort fitment was the base mounting plastic different angles on the doors but same mirror. This is how the Australian mirror system worked. They had the same mirrors for their whole rance,, Falcon, Cortina Escort etc and simply just changed the plastic spacer between the door and mirror to get the right angle. The only trouble was the plastic mirrors themselves were terrible and the reason for the switch to the European ones. dont suppose you still got one lying around do you? Complete remote mirrors or just the spacers? Are these remote mirrors that hard to find? I was surprise when you mention that the passenger remotes werent standard on any UK model as most of the cars I have seen pictured seem to have them. Did many just opt for it or has the UK car owners sought them out from other markets over the years?
