RWL81P Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 This is how the Australian mirror system worked. They had the same mirrors for their whole rance,, Falcon, Cortina Escort etc and simply just changed the plastic spacer between the door and mirror to get the right angle. The only trouble was the plastic mirrors themselves were terrible and the reason for the switch to the European ones. Complete remote mirrors or just the spacers? Are these remote mirrors that hard to find? I was surprise when you mention that the passenger remotes werent standard on any UK model as most of the cars I have seen pictured seem to have them. Did many just opt for it or has the UK car owners sought them out from other markets over the years? it seems to have become more popular in the uk in the last few years as theres quite a few people importing lhd cars now as good rhd cars are getting thin on the ground! but still i havnt seen that many cars with both remote mirrors. ive seen them on ebay fetch anything from £30 to nearly £100. just depends who's bidding and how much they want one i suppose.
colr6 Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 See that's a good thing about the Anglia, you just wind the n/ s down lean over and adjust the mirror. Remote mirrors.........pansies !!

I bought a pair for my Mk2 through Ebay in the UK a few years ago (You can just make them out in my profile photo) but I dont remember it being that hard to find a set at the time. I remember just buying the best set I could and there were several to choose from. They were certainly available new as spare parts in the UK also so I would imagine a number of cars got the passenger remote very early on. What I did find hard to get was the strengthening plate that goes inside the door to support the remote mirror. The drivers one is easy to get but the passenger one isnt. I found the mirrors easier to get then the plate itself. i have got manual, wont put remote on unless i had the passenger to match. be like having 2 cibies on the drivers side and 1 on the near side! I totally understand this and mentioned it earlier in the thread. I would only ever buy a pair of remotes as one of each does look really odd. To be honest I would have been happy with a pair of the standard ones as I dont use the remote feature at all. I went with the remotes because of the hole in the trim I already had from having a remote mirror on the drivers side and also the spacing of the Australian mirror holes could be incorporated with the European remote mirrors but one left exposed if I used the standard ones as their base isnt as wide.
YellowTaxi Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 Should be an Image of the mirrors if my computer skills worked. Yes the front on with remote and manual does look silly but thats how Ford did it back then.
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted January 19, 2017 Moderator Report Posted January 19, 2017 These are the new ones I bought from an RS dealer in the UK around 1990. (Along with Genuine Ford single leaf springs and 2.4 ratio quick rack). They were described to me when ordering as RS Custom/X-Pack Mirrors which is why I always assumed it was part of the Custom option. They did cost a fortune back then about 300 pounds for the pair with the mounting support brackets. When I decided to use the metal European mirrors a few years ago I was about to put these on, but my Mk2 was so scatty then that I decided not to waste the good new ones on it and instantly found a second hand set from Ebay instead. They were around 100 pound for the pair but that sounds like it may have been over the top back then if thats considered the high end price today.
YellowTaxi Posted January 19, 2017 Report Posted January 19, 2017 Wow, Those are incredibly rare in new condition. Get them on ebay right away, as with anything Escort Mk1 or 2 prices for new parts are crazy. Saw a washer bottle sell for over £200 a while ago. You will get good money for them for sure.
Danish Posted January 19, 2017 Report Posted January 19, 2017 See that's a good thing about the Anglia, you just wind the n/ s down lean over and adjust the mirror. Remote mirrors.........pansies !! How primitive! My n/s mirror is voice-controlled. I ask the passenger to wind the window down, then we have a pantomime of "up a bit", "in a bit", "no, in the other way". 2

RSmirrors.jpg they were a good investment. should atleast double your money. concourse fools go mad for anything in a ford box, dont know why though, once its on the car the boxes are no use.

To the right person I would say start at 3 times the purchase price and see what happens.

Thats funny but true. The box is the least impressive thing about them though. They arent even the conventional blue and white Ford boxes but these cheap plain as day brown Motorcraft ones that crinkled under their own weight over the years. I even remember thinking back then when they arrived, for the price I paid, they could have forked out a few p for a decent box!

Was going to say that you can adjust the mirrors without winding the windows down and ruffling in ones hair, but from what I've seen of you young uns you ain't got not to ruffle like me. So that throws that theory out the window. Could be another RS snobbery thing I've got TWIN remote mirrors ....lol
YellowTaxi Posted January 20, 2017 Report Posted January 20, 2017 Yes when you think about it it is a bit daft. The one you can reach by just opening the window and putting your hand out is the remote one. Incidentally both need constant adjustment One thing I notice everytime I reverse the car is how poor the mirrors are compared to modern cars. That and just how slow they are in standard form compares to even a mildly cooking modern car.
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted January 20, 2017 Moderator Report Posted January 20, 2017 You can adjust the passenger one using the remote. There is an art to it but you generally wait till you stop at a set of lights and then lean across and give it a quick tweak with your extended fingertips. Its impossible to do that with a manual one. But with these mirrors is not about getting the remote, its about getting symmetrical mirrors to avoid the odd look of having two mirrors of different shapes and sizes.
