Can you guys help in authenticating my Mk1 escort import, it has an anoimally on the original registration document where the actual manufacturer date has not been completed, but shows date registred in the country. typical DVLA crossing the i's and dotting the T's.

trying to also verify parts as it has AVO parts yet its a four door 1100cc 1972. wierd as made in germany.

Something smells hooky - The plate above looks more mk2 to me but thats not definitive - I assume its LHD? as Genk and Saarlouis didn't do RHD models. Surely only AVO parts would have been fitted via Halewood / Boreham - not in Germany. The plate above should be riveted - screws just shout i've been changed. Export shells would have had similar strengthening - type 49 shells -but Europe wouldn't be considered as such. Very strange one indeed!

Quick search reveals chassis letters GCAFLS =

G = Germany

C =Saarlouis

A= Escort

F = 4 door

LS = July 1971

hope this helps.

As Ray has already said a lot of export models received a lot of the type 49 upgrades, the axle will more than likely be a cologne one

heres one col, if theyre built in saarlouis. how come the vin tag says koln? my mk2 mex was built in saarlouis with the GCAT number. most of the black writing had rubbed off my tag over the years but couldve sworn it had saarlouis wrote on mine. could be wrong like.

same applies to uk tho, early 1300Es were mainly done at AVO in Essex, but carry a Hailwood Vin no. as that's where the shell was started

you will probably find that the car started off in one place , then went elsewhere for finishing

the plate is no different to my Mk1s, there were more than one type as the years went on, agreed on the screws, something a tad strange

that makes sense, but as far as i was aware mk2 mexicos were built in early 75 on 1600 sport shells in the uk, and from late 75 on, built in saarlouis. the rs1800s were built from these cars when they were sent to the uk, and rs1800s still have LE on the vin tag which was 16 pinto.

It think from another post, its imported from Greece or Crete? which I guess could be a Type 49 shell region based on its roads ! ! ! Definitely likely fitted with a Koln axle - tell tale is a octagonal bolted cover plate rather than the 'usual' round type. I intended no offence but I guess anything could have occurred during its life abroad.

If you need a formal letter authenticating the car's year of manufacture for the purposes of registering it with the DVLA, it is a service we offer for a small fixed fee. For more details please Email us directly at admin@oldskoolford.co.uk
