colr6 Posted January 7, 2019 Report Posted January 7, 2019 Acquired a few dash tops for the escort, all needing slight repairs! Has anyone used and done any plastic repairs to the likes ? What did you use and were the results any good? Your thoughts please.
Rich T Posted January 7, 2019 Report Posted January 7, 2019 https://www.frost.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=dashboard If you fancy having a go yourself? Never had to do it myself but Frosts stuff is usually pretty good. Rich
Ray Posted January 7, 2019 Report Posted January 7, 2019 if your talking about the cash pad part with the foam under the vinyl Colin, IMHO don't waste big money or time trying to repair big splits or holes to look like new/or original, I had one professionally done, with a similar process to that of the frosts system, just for it to just split and open up again with the temperature changes, sat on the shelf in my unit, not sure if they do a mk2 one, but on e-bay for the mk1 you can buy a leather cover, or flocking seems to be popular as well, although I tend to have a personal dislike for that, the problem with covers and / or recovering that I also tried / had done, you then cant get the air vents to fit and / or the clocks, as its all just put over the top, again not sure if they do a mk2 one, but you can buy grained GRP tops for the MK1, alternatively, look out for an undamaged one on flea bay if you look at the Frosts video, the last time I looked, there was also a product you need to buy with it, that they no longer did at that time, and neither could they advise where to get it, so the kit if you like is/was incomplete, unless they've re sourced now theres a very good dash repair man in kent, but he wont do these padded dash tops, only the hard plastics probably why good mk1 ones go for big money, don't know what the mk2 market is like price wise tho
colr6 Posted January 7, 2019 Author Report Posted January 7, 2019 That’s the reason Inask is the price of a good mk2 is around the £200 mark. I’ve got one with a hole or the making of a hole the size of a pencil head along with very slight damage where the clock facia butts up to. The second being underneath and possibly unseen when the clock surround is fitted. The other two I have have more damage and one is for a left hooker. Like the one look if poss but if they’ve got to be covered then it would be the leather look for me.
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted January 7, 2019 Moderator Report Posted January 7, 2019 If its underneath where the clocks join and not visible when assembled then it would be worth patching but I agree with Ray if its anywhere that's visible then Its not really worth it. Even if the repair was invisible (but Ive never seen a good one that was) Mk2 pads are even more susceptible to splitting than Mk1s are as the vinyl is thinner. Under Australian sun they would burst still under warranty. Any repair just becomes the focus for greater splitting. I have seen quite reasonable recover jobs though and even the fiberglass framed replicas looked pretty good when I saw one.
DT36 Posted January 7, 2019 Report Posted January 7, 2019 There you go Col, don't F about with it... 1
Monza Posted January 7, 2019 Report Posted January 7, 2019 I repaired my mk1 dash top in quite a few places using a 2 pack sandable filler that I found on web. Cut off the proud bits, filled, sanded and painted satin black. Not textured anymore but good enough for now.Spoke to Frost about what I wanted and they advised however it was out of stock. Found tha same stuff cheaper on ebay in USA but was not allowed to bring it over...Mine will do for now until I can be bothered to source a fibreglass top....which actually look quite good...Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
