Pinto on throttle bodies ...

So, those of you who know me will know that my car has been sitting gathering dust for the past 4 years for one reason or another.   However, my other half is helping me to resurrect it for this summer    Well, I say helping, it is him doing it and me overseeing it slightly, sort of, kinda doing a few bits really lol (I was valve grinding the other week and I have the blisters to prove it!).  I thought about doing the zetec conversion but have decided to stay pinto (for a bit of originality) but I'm doing away with the good old carbs and replacing with EFI and throttle bodies to get some reliability and a bit of fuel economy too

So, I have purchased a nice engine - just a little old 2.0ltr although it has a bit of a cam and a big valve head going on (apparently pushing 150bhp on the dyno) which has now been refurbed by the aforementioned other half and waiting to go into the car to replace the 2.1 Ashton Pinto which has been in there since 2007.   Nothing wrong with the engine but it was easier to get a new engine and just replace the old one which I will sell as a full set-up including the twin 45's.      

I have chosen Omex throttle bodies and am just waiting for them to arrive before the old engine is taken out and the "new" one put in.

So, for all of you that called my little car a Unicorn or Barn Find (because it has not been seen for a few years  ) can stick up your aRS*s … coming to Hampshire/Surrey show near you soon …..

Anyone else gone down this route?

Great to see it being brought back to life Jo, why not just fit TB's to the existing 2.1 though?

I keep toying with the idea of a Jenvey Heritage TB conversion on my mk1 RS as Vickie drives the car more frequently than me now and often struggles with the vagaries of big carbs. On occasion where I've not been around to start it for her first, she can struggle to get it going.

Well I  don’t believe it, they’re just pics off the net!! Your not fooling anybody. You probably run around in a Focus ST but have to keep some credibility within the club so just drop an odd teaser in to keep us all believing 😀😀😀😀

I've got my  2.0 Crusader running with a Webcon Retroject DGAS throttle body, not looking for any big power gains but ease of starting, smooth running and not tipping fuel down the exhaust pipe! all fitted now, just needs a bit more rolling road time to finish it, not a cheap conversion but I wanted to get it running as well as possible, I've been spoilt by the Jenvys on my Mk3 Tina!

I hope you do try the Jenvey Heritage TB conversion. Especially on original RS vehicles, it just seems to respect the vintage of the cars while giving the benefits of TB injection. I would love to see a thread about your experiences with it. It is expensive but it just looks great and period.

I never really noticed any greater difficulty in starting my Twincam over my Pinto. Exactly three jabs of the accelerator and up she fires. Never used any choke as it was never connected since I bought it. Is this a winter issue that I basically miss out here or something with twin carbs?

It's easy when you know how.........but it is also a knack and for someone who's only ever really owned or driven modern petrol fuel injection systems, it's easy to give it too much (or too little) throttle too quickly.

It’ll be a bit tight for buses down your street, as you need one to get to the kerb!!! ....not heard of parallel parking ??🤪

Current 2.1 needs a strip down and refresh and we don't have the time or space for that. It was easier to buy another engine and have it ready to go so the car is not in the other garage too long. We got to get it done before the '57 comes back from a new paint job as there'll be no room when that's back alongside the Fez.

Strip down and refresh already? You can't have done many miles with it and didn't Wayne have it apart a few years ago too?

My mk1 RS 2.2 motor is still as it was built in about 2006. Still pulls like a train.

I think it needs room to grow. At least so you can get out of the right hand doors. Happy to store a little silver Fezza at my place if it helps? 🙂
