Bought myself tawny brown LHD mk1 Escort recently and sent it to my local garage to see if he can get the 1.1 engine started after laying off road since 1995.

Was told the engine knackered, I have spare Volvo 1.7 turbo engine (B18FT) with complete wiring and ECUs etc that was for my R5 cabriolet but wondering if I can put it in Escort instead and mate it with Ford’s 5-speed gearbox and bell-housing?

No idea about the engine conversion but love the colour.

What country is it from?

Is it uk registered yet? If not, id leave the 1100 in there untill it is.

buy a standard engine and put it in get it registered and taxed before you alter anything

Id leave it in untill its registered, running or not. When the man turns up with his beard and clipboard, he'll want to see a complete car with an engine in place.

Cant beat matching numbers.

Dont think you need an MOT to get it registered.

Hi

I have been told to get it roadworthy and MOT it before I can register it with UK plates?

By the way, there is 1300GT engine for sale at my local area, straight swap or need few parts to make it fit, i.e, manifold, downpipe, fuel and cooling system etc.?

If the engine has compression and turns over I’m sure it will start, a very simple engine tbh

The mechanic said the engine turn after changing the points, leads, spark plugs and cleaning of carb and replacing all filters, engine won’t fire up and compression on each piston not same and one of them too low pressure - I am no technical mind thou but he said engine knackered

If it has been standing for a very long time, the chances are the rings are stuck in the piston grooves, striped a 1600 non GT crossflow last year, genuine 38K mile engine, not run for 27 years, but been stored complete in a crate wrapped in a polythene sheet, when I stripped it, every single ring was stuck solid, ended up breaking them getting them free, but the bores had very little wear in them, all turned out good after a re-build with new rings and shells.

Listen Fella - we all like a challenge but you've just bought an unregistered, French, fairly basic car with apparently not a lot of mechanical aptitude and are contemplating a Volvo engine swap (one i've never seen done) and mating it to a Ford gearbox, no doubt using 'bought in' labour via a garage / mechanic. Have you any idea what that will likely cost in time and money? As whatever number you come up with - double it! I;m pretty sure most of us, who've been round classic cars & bikes, std and modified, for many, many years wouldn't attempt such a swap . . . . . . my advice - leave it alone and concentrate on a std. car and learn basic mechanics because he may not be around 24/7 and you WILL need those skills with an old Escort!

How has the mech. come to his 'outstanding' diagnosis - has he stripped the engine or just done a comp test? Just throwing another engine at the problem doesn't solve much, especially if s/hand - 'sposing that is 'knackered' - back to square one. As noted above, the engine could be mechanically sound with simple fixes required ie. a set of rings, a light hone, and some gaskets may solve the fault and keep the originality of the car - just my opinion but your car, your time, your money!

Its a good car to learn on though as classics go.

Once you get passed all the problems you are having now, most things you'll be able to do outside your house.

Hope you asked santa for tools.

get fuel in the engine make sure its got a spark and give it a tow it will start

My regular mechanic put small diesel fuel inside the pistons via spark plug holes to soak it up to lubricant pistons for a week then tried to start it up but compression still same, the next door garage guy who got few mk1 & mk2 Escorts for work in his garage will help out on Monday to get it running so finger crossed 🤞🏼

small amount of diesel probably wont help it will be sitting in the voids in the tops of the pistons

Thanks mate, I’ll tell my mechanic it won’t work to lubricant pistons....🙄

Hopefully on Monday, other mechanic who’s into mk1/mk2 Escorts will have a look and get it running 🙏🏻🤞🏼

Hi

My original 1100cc engine need new piston rings so I bought 1300gt engine to replace it. My mechanic said it is nearly ready to start the car, just waiting for new starter motor on order.

The carb is twin Weber type so I need new air filter kits and fancy K&N ones as it will look nice and old skool look but I can’t find one for 1300 models as most for 1100cc and 1600cc? See pic
