There was a company in the UK that made replicas of these if anyone has seen one in their travels. New original ones cost half as much I paid for the car itself so a bit out of my league!

Somebody actually did and was once available through some Classics Spares place in the UK but they only had a small batch and now no longer available. Even then I think they were costing 60 quid or so which in itself seems outrageous until you see the price of originals.

Whilst I understand the 'authentic' need to have one fitted, the cynic in me asks why would anyone 'need' to trap water in the heater bowl / bulkhead joint that seems to rot out perfectly well when the hole is open or is it because its open that the problem occurs?

Exactly-whilst described as a 'drain' I think it would actually do the opposite lol. And for the sake of authenticity i'd rather have a remade one and save myself hundreds of pounds. Seems a perfect candidate for 3D printing doesn't it-and should be cheaper than £60 to make-but of course add in the term 'RS' or 'Twincam' and you can triple that haha.

Hidden behind the engine I dont think you could tell a real one from a replica so I agree replica all the way and save your money. Trouble with 3D printing is you need to have one for them to copy!

I viewed a twincam a few years ago, and asked the owner why he had a rubber flap over the hole, rather than the plastic moulding. He said that's how the early cars were like. I will look for the photo. The flap was about 2 in wide x 3 inch long and black rubber

I have seen the flap on other Mk1s yes.

It's £200 now but wonder what the 'speculators' will push it up to? And no, even £200 is too much for a piece of plastic that affects how the car runs, not one bit! You have a sensible, normal head that sees the futility of paying through the nose for pointless items that in reality would cost less than £20 when new! Your friendly Aussie parts dealer is pumping up his pension pot again I see?

Yes its a bit over the top isnt it. Im sure the replica ones were either 45 pounds or 65 pounds, still alot for a plastic tube but at a level I would consider.

You have to lean and stretch your head behind the cam cover to even see the thing. When the guy I met who bought the only purple Twincam and paid 45 thousand quid for it he asked me if I thought he had paid too much. I looked behind the cam cover and it had the original plenum drain above and I pointed at it and said nope half the cars value is hidden there!
