Brakes

Today I started the rear brake overhaul.the brake cylinder on passenger side was siezed and leaking.all cleaned up with new cylinder, shoes and drum. The only issue was the brake pipe had to be cut as the fitting were tight.

Onto the other side, drum was stuck on with handbrake off. Got the drum off and looked OK inside. The handbrake mechanism was siezed solid. Got it all sorted but again the brake pipe had to be cut.new cylinder,shoes and drums fitted.

Now I got to fit new brake pipes. Next weekend is the fronts with new discs,bearings,hubs and green stuff pads

Getting dark at 4pm now and cold. Lots of tea required.

Got the drums on and some new brake lines. Tightening up and bleeding tomorrow.  The handbrake is spot on now. On the weekend gonna get some miles and  bed the brakes in.

Following Weekend is the new discs and freshen up. Green stuff pads as well.

Rears all sorted now and much better. With a good bleed of the brakes and sorted. The front wheel wobble under breaking is better.

Today I fitted new discs, wheel bearings and green stuff pads. Drivers side tomorrow. 

And a mk2 old nail to look at

Maybe a photo illusion but have the rear wheels got some negative camber? Always wondered how that was possible with a solid / live axle!

Yes its field curvature cause by using wide angles lenses at close distances. 😀

So today was 2.5 degrees. A tad chilly even a flurry of snow.

Fitted new disc, bearings and green stuff pads to nearside. Bled all brakes.

Fitted the hubcentric spacers, rolled front arches .. ready for the forthcoming arches.

Finished off a quick refurb of the interior and got  decent bluetooth speaker. Shortened the home made console to allow handbrake to bottom out.

Went home 8pm , at 1degree

Neil, did you put a castelated nut cover and split pin over the hub nut before fitting the cap?

Sure did. All new from burtons.might have to back off one bearing by a 1/4 turn

Brakes and steering are better. Bed the brakes In before it's let loose over them Welsh mountains.

When it was up in the air, I noted the rear shocks look past their sale by date. Got a feeling Santa is going to deliver some GAZ

These green stuff pads. Got them in my hi- spec calipers but don't find them as good as people are saying.... Got a very good pedal but pads don't seem to bite. Maybe I'm expecting too much [emoji1745]

I haven't heard that many good reports on Greenstuff or their other colours for that matter. I have always liked the Ferodo DS Performance pads. They are more street orientated and bite at cooler temperatures. Their track stuff like the DS2500 that many seem to prefer requires you to heat them up first to get an good grip from them. That never worked for me in my road cars.

That's what I was thinking..... need to get them warm before they become effective. Can you get a standard pad from ferodo etc to fit the hi-spec 4 pots? Not compared size of pads yet.

Yeah I sort of get that reasoning but I would have expected opposite areas of the image to show opposite curvature which they don't - the boot lid for example! Just the wheels is a VERY limited effect?

That's true but looking at the format of the image which doesn't correspond with conventional length breath ratios i suspect it may have been cropped from original so its hard to place where the outer lens field actually is over the entire image. There is slight curvature to the lid as well just not as pronounced. Add aspheric lens elements to make lenses more compact and wider to fit in very flat mobile phones you get a minefield of aberrations. It certainly is a crazy effect!

It's deffo an illusion  even though the black escort .. ex ford press car...is an old nail,the rears are vertical. Shame its got a 270 bhp vauxhall engine.
