yeah car plan "engine laquor" is reasonably good but its very hard to prep the block to get it free of oil or any other contanimants (unless u get it acid dipped i guess) which is why it never seems to last all that long (or mine dont anyway! If u just want plain old black you can get some decent high temp paints for motorbike exhausts etc but they are f'in expensive :(

how long does smoothrite last? I guess its a decent quality paint but would have thought that the temp (esp on the head) would make it blister / flake off

i've used that engine lacquer stuff On my engine and gearbox its good stuff  It is quite thick and leaves a good finish i think there about a £5 for a small tin but its good :D

id imagine you can paint the block with anything really, its the head thats gonna burn off.

i used some hi temp paint and its shite it seems oil based and comes off if you get any wd40 or anything on it

No paint will withstand the temp between the middle two exhaust ports on a crossflow.

No paint will stick to the block/head if its not 110% squeeky clean.

Its all in the prep, just like painting the rest of your car.

Just because it says 'engine paint' on the tin it doesn't mean you can paint over any old shite.

Here's my engine after two years of use and abuse, it gets very hot and I've even had the engine out and back in and none has chipped, flaked or burnt except on the head between the middle two ports.

I paint all of my engines with Smoothrite.

Providing the block is clean & grease-free (I usually clean down with neat thinners before applying paint) it goes on well and lasts ages,

On the heads it does tend to 'char' around the exhaust ports, but all paints do. I've painted heads with engine lacquer, 'heatproof' paint, Dulux gloss, Cellulose etc and they ALL end up looking the same.

Just paint it every year!! :D

The head was car plan engine laquer and the block is just normal 2 pack. Both hold on perfect.
