I tried to work that out myself to no avail. Here’s some pics of the tank out when it was changed, probably no help I’m afraid. 
 

Maybe try Alan Potts from Car Cave in Scotland, I bought mine off him, he might have information or a contact.

I’ll be honest, even with my tank gone, I’d like to see how they work because the filler hose neck comes out of the bottom of the tank. If you brimmed the tank it would be pouring out the cap, hence fuel pissing out of it cornering.

I just read on your pervious posts it cuts out on hills. I reckon it is fuel serge.
The pick up must be uncovered temporarily when fuel is sloshing about or in your case hills.

That’s a bit misleading now as the on the last journey it cut out twice on the flat, I was lucky enough to be able to coast to a safe place to park.

The second time I blew back down the filler cap (memories of something we used to do as youths but to extract the fuel 😉), that seemed to work as it started up again so believe there is a blockage somewhere!

Does this fuel tank suction filter look like a genuine manufacturer fitted item or another South African DIY job?

Either way, it’s knackered and I need to visit the local motor factors to source a replacement, I’m wondering if is somehow contributing to my fuelling issue!

It looks like a normal fuel filter on the end of the pick up pipe in the tank. The van and estate have them on the sender unit. See pic attached.

Is the SA car fitted with a long range tank? I don't think normal saloons in the UK have the filter.

You could do without it (as it will be hard to source) and fit another inline filter just after the tank pick up in the fuel line to the front. Keep it close to the tank so you dont clog the pipe. In this way you could easy change it. If the tank is full of crap in the bottom its worth cleaning out anyway as it will keep sucking it up.

I’m not counting my chickens yet but I may have resolved the issue with a modified in-line filter in the tank. I will be removing the tank to clean at some point in the next couple of months anyway.

Will only replace with a UK tank as a last resort.

Bit the bullet at the weekend and decided to remove the fuel tank for a clean, I have been putting it off due to ill health but the time had come (I have also had both knees replaced which doesn't enable me to kneel down, not easy when working inside the car).

The issue that I had with the plastic float being holed and filling with petrol was (I thought) resolved by using a sealant/adhesive, this worked okay but as can be seen by the photos, the petrol caused it to degrade, turn to gel and come away from the float thus blocking the suction pipe and in-tank filter.

The tank is now clean and refitted with an external filter was will visibly show any contamination, problem now hopefully resolved!

Hopefully this will sort the intermittent running. Will it resolve petrol exiting the fuel cap?

I hope so, that is if the filler cap rubber seal does its job but will find out when I fill the tank up!

If you are gluing anything in the tank, I would use 3M DP490

We used it on the inside of Peugeot WRC fuel tanks and I have used it to seal a plastic tank when I accidently drilled into it 🤦‍♂️

How did you get on with the tank?

I still had the problem after everything that I had tried, the last resort was to take a flyer and buy a air new filter, it had a chrome pancake style fitted as seems to be common on SA Sports so changed it for a K&N, guess what, it worked so I can only assume that the old one was clogged and choking the engine under load, especially up hills. I still need to have the engine set up properly but don't seem to have the spare time at the moment plus a house move next week is going to be a challenge!

With regards to the issue that I have with the plastic fuel tank float being knackered, I decided to buy a cork keyring, the type that mariners use to attach important items to in case they drop them overboard and fashion a new float the same shape, it seemed to work for a while but I believe that it has become saturated and not rising with the fuel so have asked the design team at work if they can fashion a 3D copy in a suitable material, we will see (unless someone out there has a useable spare that I could purchase).

An SA float or UK? You could ring Mike Hill, I bought a UK float for my new tank. Have you still got the original carb on?

Not sure what the difference is between a standard float and one from a long range South African tank but I will take up your offer thanks, moving house next week so will wait until I have settled in and will send the new address and funds 👍
