I priced it up for my escort and it came to about 5k and thats with the engine and loom being bought for a grand which is cheap....

So I went for a pinto install on bike carbs, I am stiil waiting for them to come back from Boggs Bros.... :(

It should come to about a grand for that conversion not as good as a cossie tho

Out of interest what was the remaining 4k being spent on ?

That seems a big figure to fit an engine that cost you a grand.

It was something like this: 2.5k for baby atlas n diff, Engine £1,000, WCXM £100, Prop £110, Headset for cossie £400, engine mounts, £50, radiator £210, alternator and starter motor £100, brake kit £235 and £300 quid on odds and sods like hoses etc.

I may be way off but thats how I priced it....

would be a bit cheaper than that hopefully was gonna keep my brakes as they are, princess 4 pots as hoped they would be enough, axle wise i was gonna get the hercules from rally design as a lot cheaper than the atlas and they are local to me so if i need spares its pretty easy

on 175/50/13's you wouldnt need an Atlas ... thats £2500 saved

would a linked english with an lsd be enough gary? would it cope or would i be forever breaking it?

Bollox to the turbos  , they sound shit and don't go any faster than the atmo cossies except on top speed runs on 4 mile long airstrips . There's 100's of turbo cossie mk1/2 escorts and only about 5 quick ones that don't have to cheat with nos !!!!!!!! :scared:

i did think about na but its the cost of the extra machining, different pstons etc that put me off, all i want to hopefully do is fit a good engine without having to have machining etc

All depends on how much grip you get.... no grip and the English is safe.. wide wheels or better rear geometry and you'll break it

what would you recommend on an un arched mk1 to be able to get the traction?

Posted

Pound for Foot/Pound you cant beat a turbo...

Na Cossie .. the best in the world aint gonna more than 200ft/lb of torque ..

Turbo cossie ... up to 500ft/lb and more

Best na cossie ... 290bhp at a cost in excess of 10k installed

average Turbo ... CG YBT is around 400bhp for under 6k .. and will out last a NA screamer.

Without the torque you have to run a high CWP number .. 3.9 - 4.1 for the accel and loose the top end.

With torque you have the power to run a low CWP and have the accel and high top speed.

Turbo engines will always win on that score

By that do you mean what would I do to an unarched Escort to get the best traction ?

Or would i fit an Atlas .... I'd always fit an Atlas .. got 2 cars out there unarched but because of rules we have to stick with the english and the constant shaft breaking

The cost of the N.A. cossie head work is cheaper then all the extra shell strengthing , T5 tunnel mods , bigger brakes all round , intercoolers , turbos , linked atlas , etc etc that a sorted turbo install needs . My mates simple mk2 escort cossie conversion has split /cracked the shell with the stress . I wound get retromotorsport or gartrac etc to weld in all the roll cage + gp4 escort bits to cope with a turbo install really . Both types of cossie conversions aren't cheap , ask anyone whos done it and money will vanish fast !!!!!!!

That said Gaz... you will need the brakes and the shell strength for both engines ... if .. and its a big if , you have the grip.. a car with the same grip levels as standard will only grip the smae .. so if you spun the wheels with a pinto in it at say 150ft/lb you'll still spin at that rate even with a dyno (strapped down and 4 blokes in the boot) proven 300 ft/lb

with an atlas would i need to tub it?

Monza (mk1 426bhp and 400 odd ft/lb at T&R) had an atlas, a T5 and bugger all else done to it ... Datalogging said 178mph and this was backed up on the rollers, gear calculator said 181mph.

It ran 185 tyres i belive

later it was clubman linked and had a modded SD cage to pick up on the turrets ...

By the way Monza is the Monza coloured mk1 that was running along side Pigs yellow Mk2 in the mag recently

We were thinking about doing this aswell, but just buying a rotten Sapphire Cosworth, robbin anything that was any good off it,build the YB up bit by bit and then when we did put it in the Escort, put the Pinto in the Sierra.

I was toying with the idea of cossie conversion and then added up costs

XE half the price, not quite the same I know, but plenty of power for a MK1 (especially in the wet  ) and cheaper when it goes bang :)

I don't think there is a cheap cossie install really unless you ave alot of old parts kickin around, I think your still lookin at the figure I quoted because your lookin at 2.5k for a decent engine that may not require a re-build. The only reason I was offered a cheap engine is beause it was in bits and it was off a mate. Go with an XE as its a cossie engine anyway (sort of) and its alot cheaper and sounds better screamin its nuts off

twink as you know i have turbo cossie in anglebox and it is greif, not just the engine but all the mods to take it i would go the easier route now i know what i know , but it was all worth it to me  depends how much you want it ? and how quick you want it done
