orionmojo Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 lets get a debate going! ok, why are they so popular? as opposed to other old fords, such as the pop, cortina, anglia, capri, consul etc etc etc. they only became really popular after their rallying success, which the mk1 cortina made way for. so why do people go mad for them, and why are they demanding such high prices? it really baffles me that a mk1 escort can go for 4k easily and a similar specced cortina or pop can be picked up for 2- 2.5k. this is not a 'slate them' thread or anything stupid like that, more of an enquiry. discuss.
johnny_h Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 I believe it's how they look above anything else. It's the best looking OSF in my opinion.
john_3.0s Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 I believe it's how they look above anything else. It's the best looking OSF in my opinion. no mate thats a mk1 capri colonge.... Anyway.... For me its because I grew up seeing them on the roads, they were the golf gti of their day I guess.
antz Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 i dont know really. i always like the shape and when i was looking for a osf i was after eithre a mk1 or a mk2. not bothered at they are both as nice in my opinion. just happened that a mk2 came up (i was originally after a capri but the insurance put me off)

Retromotorsport Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 Easy... supply and demand .. sorry just killed the debate
johnny_h Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 Supply and demand had nothing to do with it when I bought my first 17 years ago and it had fook all to do with it this time.

Gonzo Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 i woulda said its mainly the rallying heritage and the fact there were so many cool factory options and the mental engines at the time. i prefer the mk1 cortina meself. real retro cool.
Vista Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 lets get a debate going! ok, why are they so popular? as opposed to other old fords, such as the pop, cortina, anglia, capri, consul etc etc etc. they only became really popular after their rallying success, which the mk1 cortina made way for. so why do people go mad for them, and why are they demanding such high prices? it really baffles me that a mk1 escort can go for 4k easily and a similar specced cortina or pop can be picked up for 2- 2.5k. this is not a 'slate them' thread or anything stupid like that, more of an enquiry. discuss. £4k????? You're not getting near mine for that, my engine owes me more than that alone! As to why so popular I don't know, I hear what you're saying about the Rallying being kicked off by the Cortina, but it didn't enjoy anything like the success of the Escort did it? Plus the mk1 and 2 escorts are amongst the easiest to improve and modify of all classic Fords and arguably give the best all round performance package (as they did in motorsport) when finished. I think Retro has hit the nail on the head, prices go up because everybody wants one, they then become the car to have so even more people want one. I suspect eventually the bubble will burst but am glad to see that Classic Ford motoring in general is enjoying a renaissance, thanks at least in part to this site IMHO.

MightySprocket Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 ROGER CLARKE! thats why they are popular, just as McCrash & Solberg made scoobys popular!
105Nick Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 I believe it's how they look above anything else. It's the best looking OSF in my opinion. Seconded. I dunno, my brother used to have them when I was little, a daytona yellow one which I just thought was teh coolest car there was, I wasn'tr interested in cossies or anything, and used to muck about doing siodeways stuff in his bubble arched toy, and that just set in. My grandad had a Mk2, and because of that car I've only just come round to them (sorry). For me, it just has so much charater, its the original, genuine article with the fake wood trimmings, the polka dot seats and six dial dash, its just that much bit harsher than a Mk2. When I bought mine, the guy was using a well sorted mex replica in red with white stripes and we followed him, it was sideways everywhere and no matter who they were people just stopped and stared. Its just the original escort and it was so phenominal on the rallying and racing circuit. I just love the way Roger Clarke could make it dance on the stages too, and unlike a capri, which the coupe shape and burbling V6 kind of gives away, it can make an awesopme street sleeper which is right up my street. I love my anglia too, but you can't modify it as easily and readily and cheaply.
Retromotorsport Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 Thanks Vista... The supply .. the rarer something is the more it costs.. the more it costs the more desirable it becomes .. the more desirable it becomes the more it costs .. Take Fiats.. ermm I mean Ferrari's .. not many built .. so cost is high.. and so they are desirable .. for the same money you can have a quicker carfrom A to B car and just as comfortable for a lot less money .. older Ferrari's .. uncomfortable and full of problems and yet they still demand high money because theres even less of them, and what have they won..not a lot outside Italian GT's race and F1. Also in the realms of classic sporting saloons from the 70's there not much else avalible thats as easy to do as an escort, the parts for some cars have all but dried up and the cars numbers ..just a few , look at Lotus Sunbeams .. not loved by many yet demand escort prices. And you cant get a front panel for them or rear arches. Then you have the mates thing... " my mates got an escort.. i want one " But then we are back into supply and demand again . And Vista is right .. the web presence of the CF body is huge .. 106 viewers on this site and 90 viewing Old School Banter on TS , at a time of day when numbers are low .. dinnertime, have a look on a classic vauxhall site .. 2-3 viewers.. The mags.. the videos .. all of it pushes demand up and that shortens supply ... which up the deman for them.. and so on and so on. but the simple answer remain.. Supply and Demand make the Mk1 popular . If it was the rally cars that inspire... the sales of 175/50/13's would only apply to Minis
4parajon Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 I'm not knocking anyone's choice of OSF either because I'm sure I'm in the minority, but Mk1 'scorts have never really done anything for me. I luv Mk2's though, my favourite OSF that is. Each to there own I guess. I do think as has been mentioned that a lot of it is what you grow up with, I grew up with Mk2's, maybe thats why
RETRO_AL Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 dunno what it is but when i see a mk1 mk2 escort i do a sex wee dont matter if its a rat or a minter i love um, nothing else does it for me

GT_Jim Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 i think its all down to when motorsport caught the publics eye before the escort ford used the mk1 tinas which at that time btcc was more of a track day compared to how it is now the same can be said for rallying. when it did catch the attiontion ford were using escorts and racking up the winnings the same for the mk2 and they were cheap so joe public could buy one and think he could rally now he is older he wants to relive his child hood
bomber1 Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 I'm not knocking anyone's choice of OSF either because I'm sure I'm in the minority, but Mk1 'scorts have never really done anything for me. I do think as has been mentioned that a lot of it is what you grow up with, I grew up with Mk2's, maybe thats why capris dont do anything for me realy but in the realms of osf i love all models wether its a 997cc anglia or v8/cossie capri etc etc it has to be a scort for me seeing my step dad drifting them on the dirt tracks
Rich Sav Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 i think there all ace motors and i respect any one who has one but its the shape that dose it 4 me love the look of a 105e or a 100e or a 300e van dont know just love them all
MK2STOO Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 The mk1 Escort is the absolute pinacle of the osf scene! Everyones had one, everyone wants one!
BIGKEV Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 It sucks though for your average Joe like me - Not two pennies to rub together yet when its finished it will be an asset worth a few grand - Mental how it works like that - Mk1's dont do it for me though - deffo the MK2 never owned a mk1 but had plenty of Mk2's
72mk1escort Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 I love all Mk1's not to sure on mk2's for some reason i cant lay my finger on it doh
Rick Posted March 15, 2007 Report Posted March 15, 2007 i discovered mk1 escorts in my own way, not because of the hype i saw some lads thrashing an old 4 door. i just thought wow i like that car, i didnt even know what it was called til i spoke to my dad and then he pulled out the photo of his. hooked not sure about mk2's they seem to have a bit of tackiness in the design too much glass i think id still have one if it came available though
