True story: many years ago a co-worker was testing a battery charger. He used a multimeter to test the battery voltage every hour or so. What he didn't know was that someone else just used the same multimeter to measure current through a motor. When co-worker 1 next used the multimeter to measure voltage (which was still in current mode) the thing plus the battery terminals disintegrated with a big bang. Co-worker 1 escaped unhurt, co-worker 2 wasn't seen for a few days ...
