slimrs Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 im putting a yb turbo in my mk2 and was led to believe the english axle wouldnt cope with the power and i would need an atlas. at the minute i havent got the money to buy a good one and some one told me that if i can find one from a mk1 capri they are the same width. ive seen this on ebay and wondered if it would do the job until some funds come in for a better one, do all mk1 capris have atlas axles? apparently it is 54 inches from drum to drum http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=004
Admin Vista Posted May 21, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 21, 2007 It's hard to be sure from that photo angle, but that looks like an English axle to me. The Atlas from a mk1 Capri that you want is a Mk1 3 litre axle. It's not absolutely necessary to go to an Atlas axle there are things that can be done to improve the strength of the English. The Atlas is also a lot heavier. Plus don't forget it's not power that breaks axles it's grip. If you're going to super wide tyres you'll need to upgrade your axle but if you're staying relatively standard you'll probably be ok with the english
slimrs Posted May 21, 2007 Author Report Posted May 21, 2007 looks like an english axle to me i had a funny feeling it was, thanks mate

Dom Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 Like vista said it's grip that breaks things not power. I've got an english in the back of my mk1 capri, i'm on the look out for a atlas but i'm not too bothered at the moment. I've got cheap wallowy tyres that squidge and squirm all the time, adds to the fun
jay Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 defo looks like and english to me too..... but it is a bit of a cack pic...
Admin Vista Posted May 21, 2007 Admin Report Posted May 21, 2007 a mk3 1.6capri has an atlas! But they're much wider than the mk1 Capri axles, I remember a friend of mine fitting a mk3 axle to his mk1 not realising they were different widths, The results were comical

I'm pretty sure a standard Wide Atlas is 52", the Mk1 Capri is called a Narrow Atlas at 50" and a Baby is 48".
Retromotorsport Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 Were baby atlas' standard in any cars? Only in a few Mk2's for export only .. the later export cars came with a Salisbury Type Koln axle and this wasnt ready in time so they fitted babies to the cars, the Koln is about the same strength as the English (timken type) Sameish size internals hence the same strength/weakness That axle is an English .. Breather on center section not on tube like an Atlas.. 50" flange to flange, (2" drums, hence 54") all Mk1's had those except the 3L one which were the Salisbury Atlas Type of 50" F to F
