Sorn and pre 74 cars...Question

If I wish to off road (garage) my car for six months and the foc tax disc is due up shortly (don,t wish to re-insure yet ) do I have to go through the same Sorn procedure as a non historic car and what is the rigmoral for putting it back on the road...do I need special forms to apply for the next tax disc later on...help please !

Not sure on this one. I have had my Mex registered to me for a good few months now but have not gone to claim my free tax or declared it offroad. No letters yet..

Yes you do need to SORN it even if it's tax exempt.

 

 

To re-tax it after the SORN period, all you need to do is go to your local PO (or DVLA offica) with log book, MOT and insurance, and you'll get new tax. It's as easy as that.

I've just recieved the log book for the Capri so I went straight down the PO to SORN it. Although it had not been taxed for 10 years, the previous owner never had a SORN request

 

Even if its tax exempt, you still have to SORN it though. When your ready to retax it, just pop down the PO and fill a new form out. Quite simple really

You can sorn a car online now, all you need is either the reminder or the reg document

Thanks for this guys...I,m one of those who hates reading detailed instructions , if I buy anything that needs assembling I,d rather just take a quick deco at the pictures and away I go , can,t be bothered with hours of studying , thats for lesser mortals LOL !

If your taxed expired before the sorn regulation came into force then you wont need to do it, however if the car changes ownership or a tax disc expires tax exempt or not then a sorn needs to be done, if you ins is still valid before your tax expires just tax it as normal and then its ready to drive the minute you want to use it or move it on a public road

i have bought some cars that were off the road pre-sorn,and when i sent off to sorn them,just to cover myself,they came back saying it wasn't needed. it's designed to confuse so they can fine you

Done mine online, much easier than going to the post office, just make sure you print out the confirmation, then nothing to worry about for a year. Then re tax or SORN it for another year online again, all from the comfort of your house

I did that when I bought my motorbike. Only for one month, and I got a fine. Not free tax on the bike though

I never sorn the cortina and didnt hear from them but wouldnt chance it though

they do charge you if you dont sorn it....last year when i came to get my tax...its cost me a total of £420...with the time it wernt sorn etc...so you have been warned
