OllieC Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 i'm only guessing, but i would say that even the lighter all aluminium engines like bmws or hondas will be a fair bit heavier than a x flow they have to be built to such a higher spec to stand the compression ratios of 17-18:1, i would guess once you add all the turbo gubbins your looking at the weight of a YB rather than a x flow

School boy1 Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 In the current PPC mag, there is a tuned 205 with a 1.9 306 engine in it and thats rapid. 300lb/ft, spins alll the way to 4th gear Its about 180bhp as well.
bortaf Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 Had a Mk3 cortina pickup last year that was converted to diesel, it had a 1.8Turbo sierra engine and box You could use the head and ancilleries of a later mondeo with intercooler ect, that would ni-on bolt straight in but they are heavy old lumps, acording to the bend in me engine hoist they are heavyer than a pinto I spose you could use a compleat modeo lump but i dont think the RWD bosses are on the block to drill and use ? Personly i love the pug 1.9 TD engines but they don't bolt straight up to a Type 9 box

Admin Vista Posted August 24, 2007 Admin Report Posted August 24, 2007 I like the idea of the torque + good power AND economy that a modern oil burner would provide in an OSF, but always come unstuck on the fact that really modern oil burners are probably quite pricey, even from crashed cars. Plus the reason they develop such good power from a diesel engine is that they have lots of fancy electronic trickery controlling the injection systems and turbos. Now by the time you've factored in all these conversion costs, including getting the drivetrain matched up, you'd probably need to cover a gargantuan anual mileage to actually save money on the project via reduced fuel costs.
quattro Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 The engine and gearbox from a Skoda Fabia vRS would be pretty awesome in an OSF. They are circa 130bhp standard with more torque than a Boxter, they are chipable to 180bhp and if you put the larger turbo on it, you can boost power to about 220-240bhp. Got me thinking now.... Would love the torque of a powerful diesel in a Capper!
