escysean Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 I dunno why I did but I place a bid for the car - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWN:IT&ih=019 Seems that I have won the bid for 1,000 euros (£676) on looking mint but unseen mk1 Escort 4-door. Trouble is that I have promise my missus that I am not buying cars anymore but foolishly bought it via ebay, it is in Italy!!! How do feck can I go there and bring it back to UK without my missus knowing? On top of that, my mate have just sold his car transporter other week............ Any help and advice would be grateful......
Popuptoaster Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 Managed to drive to northern italy (trento) in 12 hours from essex in a pickup truck, so if you rent a recovery lorry you and a mate could do it in a day (ish)

James HPE Motorsport Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 I think you should get a train out there and drive the escort back!!!
GJUK Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 Any help and advice would be grateful...... Dont do it again! Tell the guy your son bidded on the item as a mistake/you've just had a family death and need to pay for the funeral/offer to pay the charges and say your are sorry? I'm sure you could get out of it if you need to. Jon

emu Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 Easyjet/ryanair flight out there. Spare set of points, a hammer, a screwdriver and an adjustable spanner in your pocket. Then drive it back. I keep thinking that sort of a trip would be great fun, but then perhaps im too easily pleased
Popuptoaster Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 We did the 1000 mile in 12 hour trip for work, but we had such a grin we are gonna do it again for fun, I reckon you should go get it, tell her you got a suprise weekend in Italyt set up fr her and fly out and drive back. Some pics of our trip to tempt you, mostly taken from the truck though as we didnt have time to stop with our time limits. http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.c ... ID=9251618
escysean Posted September 6, 2007 Author Report Posted September 6, 2007 Hi guys, Thanks for very useful "advice" and your "help"...... I have spent all day thinking of some excuses to spin the missus about investment etc....but back out once she got in from work in bad mood So I am waiting for right time to explain my foolish action once she is in happy mood By the way, I have spoken to Italtian seller via emails, he can speak and write good English, he said the car was off the road and garaged since 1998 but regularly start up and drive around a bit, but need full service overhaul, so finger-crossed after he send the car to his local garage, I would be able to fly over and drive it back home, baring the situation with the missus to be resolved asap Will report later after I come clean.....if you don't hear from me within 24 hours....call 999 Sean
escysean Posted September 7, 2007 Author Report Posted September 7, 2007 Newsflash!! I'm still alive.....woohoo!! I came clean to my missus after I dined her, wined her, kissed her, cuddled her and making loved her....she finally accepted that my well meaning attempted on get rich quick on buying foriegn OSF and sell it at big profit once I bring it to UK and list it at eBay.......... She said "yeah, go ahead and do it, if you can't sell it, keep it as investment...."! The car is at the seller's own hotel underground garage in northern Italy, at Trentino, it was originally from down south of Italy where it is dry and very hot climate My plan is to bring my car and trailer to Italy and bring it back home via Eurochannel as it is cheaper than using ferry and also I don't want to drive OSF in case it break-down in middle of nowhere Problem is that I will be sooo busy with family from USA visiting us at brother-in-law's house in Binfield, Berkshire for dad's surprise 50th and missus' brother's wedding this month, so will arrange to go at the end of this month, need co-driver to join with me, gotta do it in sometime mid-week only, not at the weekends Any volunteer? Will update my report on how the heck do I find how to bring the Escort back to UK...... Sean
BronzeRS Posted September 9, 2007 Report Posted September 9, 2007 Brave man!!! But coming clean was definitely the best policy:). I hope you have learnt your lesson...........Although it reminds me of my brother in law who bought a boat whilst drunk one night on Ebay!!!! Should have been there when he explained that one:)
Richierich Posted September 10, 2007 Report Posted September 10, 2007 hmmm, must be one of the few times honesty actually worked!! Thats refreshing!!
dssean Posted September 11, 2007 Report Posted September 11, 2007 mate, speaking from experience you dont want to do the journey in an unknown car. its a bloody long drive through switerland and france .do yourself a favour and get a local transport company to bring it over for .cost should be around £700 . not too much when you thinlk of flights, hotels.fuel, tolls, food, ferry or train. plus the car getrs to you in the same condition. its unfair to expeact an old escort to do that sort of milage after been sitting for nearly 10 years.
