i fitted my sump with one of them magnetic sump plugs last year due to the shite quality (whatever you do dont but one) of them it snapped as i nipped it up . however it still sealed(ish) and i continued to use the car. now winter is here its time for oil service ect, so before i make a start i want to know if the sump can be removed while the motor is still in the car to get the remains of the plug out. 1600x/flow and standard cross member. also anyone got a spare sump plug.

Not really mate, i wouldn't recommend working underneath an engine that is just hanging by a rope or chain etc.

 

that is the only way you can do it though without taking the lump out, as the crossmember has to be removed .

i would do but the magnetic ones are brass and magnet

so dont think i can weld to it

you'd probably have to drill so deep it would go through it to use an easy-out

 

if you've got a small rotary grinder (dremel) type thing, could you not use a small cutting disk and cut a small slot in a few mm. then use a good strong screwdriver?

They sell normal sump plugs in halfords , i saw them today

Magnets are usually really hard so about the only drill that will touch it I suspect, is a masonary drill, as they have a super hard carbide tip.

 

Point was made earlier though about maybe no wanting to go thru or you might end up with bits in your oil.

 

I recon you should be able to get the sump off if you drop the cross-member, but definately not without, so you'll need to support the engine from above.

 

Definately worth a go, having said that, I recon, you'll probably then struggle with the gasket a bit, which will probably then leak!! so you might almost be as well to bite the bullit and engine out .

 

I have done it with my Cortina, but I think there is more room in the tunnel to give you enough room to just lift the engine -Oh - drop at the front too, but an escort is a lot tighter I think.

how about just leaving it? get one of these vacuum pumps to draw the old oil out of the dip stick hole (get it hot first) then change the oil & filter as normal?

if its a magnet surely drilling it out wont hurt it will hold all the swarf and bits together so they dont go floating off.

 

id sure try all of these methods before i resorted to removing an engine for the sake of an oil change

I've just had another idea. Drill it a bit under the diameter of an Allan key accross the corners and then hammer that inside it. I have never had much luck with easy-outs but if you can get the corners of an Allan key to thump into the brass (which I imagine is around the outside of the magnetic core) I'm sure it will do it!!

 

Obviously use someone elses Allan key for the hammering and leavering!!

you could try plastic steel mouldy repair sticky poxy putty stuff with a bolt stuck in it to turn the plug out.
