ZetecTinaLee Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 As above really, running a zetec turbo in my mk1 cortina that will have something in the region of 350hp with 360ish lb/ft, What do you guys reckon? Then what diff and shafts.. quaife? cheers in advance liam
Guest MK1gaz Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 You need a £2500+ pucker shorted Atlas mate
ZetecTinaLee Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 The ones your on about, they the itms you see in the mags already built with the disc conversions on and that? Ther flippin expensive!! Is a normal atlas cut down with decent diff and shafts not good enough? I know nothing about axles by the way cheers
LEONMEX Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 your best off speaking to someone like fostek & they will point you in the right direction as gaz said £2500 for a fully built atlas ain't far out the way. Or put a post up in retro's room as he could talk more sense than i can
Guest MK1gaz Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 You can get a standard capri 2.8i lsd atlas axle and pray the 20+ year old bits in it are up to the job and then get it shortened to fit . You'll be stuck with a shit final drive ratio that's ok for 180mph motorway cruising though . Atlas bits are fooooooooking expensive , just a new diff and CWP is over a grand !!!!!!!!!! . Blame the playboy millionaire rally drivers for the steep prices cos they'll buy any overpriced shite they can lay their hands on !!!!!!!!
ZetecTinaLee Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 That was my idea... get a atlas have it shortened and put a decent dif and shafts in. Not sure on ratios but its running a t5 box which have quite long gears anyway!! £2500 G G's better get saving
Guest MK1gaz Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Or just leave the English axle and break £20 halfshafts now and then as it's much cheaper !!!!!!!
60ftman Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 US Ford 8" or 9" axle. Same set-up as the English axle but tough as old boots. 8" axles are cheap as chips because everybody wants the 9" ones. Bulletproof Halfshafts custom made to any length in the US for about £300. Slipper or Spool for about the same money. Just about any ratio available. Axle casings for peanuts. Build something that you'll NEVER break for less than a grand!
mk1mexico Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Depends how hard you will be launching the car and also, its your grip that breaks axles not necesarily the power. So if your running 13 inch wheels you will just spin alot
ZetecTinaLee Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 60ftman- Where can I get these items from!!? Few peeps have said get quaife shafts and slipper in the english, there quite tough... How tough is the english? and yes im running 13's
Mr Sam Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 US Ford 8" or 9" axle.Same set-up as the English axle but tough as old boots. 8" axles are cheap as chips because everybody wants the 9" ones. Build something that you'll NEVER break for less than a grand! was waiting for someone to mention 9inches PM petrolhead01 he peiced together and axel with an unbrakeble warranty or something along those lines last summer, could be just the halfshafts that are on warranty i forget
Mk 1 Mark Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Sure Kj or big rod might be able to help you... Also petrohead has one in his car.... But they are heavy......But will save you almost ££££ If going the Capri Atlas route...
ZetecTinaLee Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 Rod used an english in the van didnt he untill he broke shafts!! Reckoned it lasted quite a while though!! Il ask him next time I get the chance!! Mark, how much you after for the english you have with the panhard and tramp bars??
puddy Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 V8ian uses a toyota corolla axle I think behind his rover in his mk2,people have also used volvo axles and sherpa believe it or not! Another alternative is a 4ha . puddy ps...I had an english behind my cossie and never broke it
Dom Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Apparently volvo's are damn near unbreakable
brettp Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 got an 8 inch on mine alway s held up ok even with the gas on and a lot of them come with lsd s and disc brakes
FlashCadillac Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 im haveing a turbo zetec ZVH built as we type and im using the standard english... iv been told its strong engouh as the turbo provides a gradual increase in power cos of the turbo lag.... i wasnt expecting 350bhp.... more like 250 to 300bhp
60ftman Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 60ftman- Where can I get these items from!!? Few peeps have said get quaife shafts and slipper in the english, there quite tough... How tough is the english? and yes im running 13's For an 8" axle casing look on ebay or www.eurodragster.com For shafts and diff parts deal direct with strange engineering in the US www.strangeengineering.net. Don't be put off by dealing across the Atlantic. You'll find that parts are so much cheaper than anyone can do in the UK as you'll be cutting out the middle-man. It will work out much cheaper than a Quaife equipped English axle, and it'll be a lot stronger as well. I've got a shortened 9" with Custom Strange spool and axles in mine. running 18.5" grippy tyres and everything's still perfect after 4 years of abuse! Cost about £800 in total!!!! Good luck
Toby Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Apparently volvo's are damn near unbreakable So you'll ALMOST get home ok!! Big shafts in a Tran - X diff in an english axle wont break readily, rough cost £800 - £1,000, but I think the CWP tends to get noisey when big torque is put into them (Puddy has omitted to mention that ) The nice thing about the English (and the 8" I think) is that the ratio change is easy as its all a sub assembly, front loaded so the atlas is not so easy to experiment with ratios. It's a trade off of weight / cost / strength / changability.
M11rf Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Does anyone have any info on Toyota Crown axles? I heard they were pretty good, but i'm not sure...
kevmk2 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I got my atlas axle for £70 with a 3.75 ratio in it. Then bought a capri lsd for £280, then got ZF repair kit from burtons, which converts the standard diff to twin plate clutch. Then got HT racing to shorted it and fit 4 link brackets and shock mounts on in the same place as my english axle. That cost £330 including powder coating the axle. Then around £500 for the grp1 2 piece quaife shafts with ZF side gears. So all in for just under £1200 But that was around 4 or 5 years ago
V8ian Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Ive got a Toyota Celica LSD Axle, and this has taken some serious abuse over the yrars, Any axle you choose can be made stronger!!! just how big your wallet is is the limiting factor, Converting an open diff to LSD will effectivly strengthen the axle by spreading the load thru 2 wheels, Aftermarket shafts from Strange and Moser are readily available from the likes of Hauser and Robinsons at about £400 per pair, these can be made for ANY axle you choose. Persinally I dont like the 2 piece Quaife shafts, which have a tendancy to damage flanges, I think this is down to the shafts being originally designed for the rally boys whre bending a flange by hitting something is common, and its far cheaper to change the flange than complete shaft, and as such is "sacrificial" and relatively soft to bend or break first, and were once described to me as being made of Toffee There are lots of options, depends on what your budget is, Mk2 Jag, Sherpa/SD1/Westminister, and Volvo, all VERY strong, but parts are a bit thin on the ground, as is my Celica, Lots of Japanses 4x4 axles come with LSDs and are very strong, how you determine what is the strongest could be a suck it and see exercise, TBH I think the 8" is about the best option, and as stated, Curries, They will make a axle to your spec for not a lot of money, relative to a Pro built Atlas, Another option is again Ford, but the 8.8, gaining populayity in the states for being strong if you have the right one, reasonably cheap over here, about the only mod apart from narrowing would be a "C" clip removal for a posative lock system. But the bigger the axle you go forthe more HP it takes to turn it due to frictional effort, I beleive a 9" takes around 30-35 hp in frictional losses and also the bigger you go the more they weigh!!, again taking extra HP to propel the car. Beware if you are paying someone to do th work for you, a friend of mine decided he needed a new, narrower axle, and put the car into a pro workshop, that cost him over 4k and not even painted or assembled!!! TomB Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 8 inch ford in mine with Strange shafts and a spool Toby your right mate 8 and 9 inch are front loading diff. I am also going to build m spare diff with a LSD. I know a mate of mine run a 9.4 on a 8 inch so im safe.
Toby Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I know a mate of mine run a 9.4 on a 8 inch so im safe. Unless you run a 9.3!
