Another update. Thanks for the help on the last one. Head was checked over and no harm done. New gaskets and overhaul kits and such and this is where we are......

 

 

Again, thanks for the help so far... Especially of my dad, who has done all this so far without my knowledge. Parents are great !!!!! You wouldnt think i was a grown man.

 

Anyway....on with the story. The head we have was purchased ten year ago from a race/rally spares place somewhere in Wales. Originally i had wanted a stage 1 head but they only had a stage two and i didnt want that hot really. Well in the end i bought a pinto head from what I was told was an xr4/xr4x4 engine?? which had slightly larger ports than an original stage one escort head but smaller than stage two; A one a half shall we say (are we still with this??).

 

Anyhow, I have taken the serial of the side and it starts with the initals RR. Does that make this an unleaded head is all I really wanted to ask after all that.

 

And whether anyone can shed some light on the port size story, as to be honest I havent really studied port sizes much myself

check ont he machined surfaces around no.4 exhaust port, there will be a letter or pair of letters punched into it somewhere, they mean its unleaded safe. the other thing is to look at the valve seat on the exhaust side, you can see the harded insert fitted into the head (assuming its unleaded safe).

Well it wouldn't be an XR4 or XR4x4 head as they were 2.8i V6's. But you may have a head from a 2.0 injection Sierra. One easy way of telling is... are the inlet ports 'pear' shaped? If they are, the shaping at the top of the ports was for the injectors. These heads are unleaded friendly.

 

I was told what letters to look out for some years ago by a friendly Ford technition... but i'm buggered if I can remember them now. Sorry mate.

XR4i and XR4X4 were both available as 2 litre

Just googled it and the 2.0 xr4i does exist, 5-door later model probably looks like a standard sierra

yep , there is a 2l xr4i ,a pretty rare beast now

as said here in england it was a mk2 4 door

in europe you could get a 2 door version
