When my brothers got there pintos they spent about £2500 on them and when they took them to the rollers they had 185+bhp
Vulcan Engineering Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 It would be nice to see what the other Engine buliders on here would Quote for a turn key 180+ spec pinto with all new parts ( forged pistons & steel rods & carbs & dizzy & Lumenition & double big wing sump & exhaust manifold & Dyno tested all as per my list ???? If they are up for a chalange then copy my list & quote !!!!

Admin Mk2Jo Posted April 9, 2008 Admin Report Posted April 9, 2008 Don't forget that Steve has included absolutely everything - all the parts to make a bolt in and go engine - carbs, sump, plugs and leads, rocker cover, labour, dyno etc I paid £850 for my twin 48's last year alone from Burtons If you want a short engine then it will obviously be cheaper

When my brothers got there pintos they spent about £2500 on them and when they took them to the rollers they had 185+bhp Was it EXACTLY as the list shown though Harry including labour charge at standard non family rate and all the ancilliaries?
kevmk2 Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 There are obviously ways of doing it cheaper, using your loaf and doing most of it yourself if you are confident enough. I done a budget 190bhp engine on 48's with cast pistons, 2.1, big valve head for £1400. Head was the most expensive part from Burtons at the time, well CTM's, not Burtons That was £750 for a full race spec head with BF63 cam. £400 for a complete fresh bottom end from Ron at HT's. it was one of Big Jon's spare bottom ends he wasnt using. Pair of 48's from my brother for £250 and job done But that was back in 98-99 Then i sold that engine for £1000 to a mate and bought my 2.2 HT engine from Ron, it was second hand, but was complete with carbs, oil cooler etc, no exhaust manifold for £3500. Then i used it for 2 years and sold it to my mate for £3500 Thats the thing with HT engines, they hold their money if sold to people who know thier engines.

Take possie's engine for instance, that was what my grandad called a cheapy engine. £1800 pound got my brothers a built engine minus carbs and manifold and at most they spent another grand on carbs, manifold, exhaust system etc. Im not sure what the labour charges are but you can find out by ringing jeff. I suppose part prices have gone up since 2003 but there is no way i would be paying 7000 pounds for a 180bhp pinto
Admin Mk2Jo Posted April 9, 2008 Admin Report Posted April 9, 2008 I'm sorry but you can't compare unless you have like for like listed with costs Of course you don't pay £7k - your family build engines - I would be pretty annoyed if my family charged me non family rates And if you are able to build an engine or do part of the work then you can save some money, no question ... but many of us can't
kevmk2 Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 And yet gaz says you could prob get that power for a grand lolYou can get 170 bhp for £1500 if you know what your doing . The problem is not many people do Very true mate Ron at HT's used to be able to do a 2.2 bottom end for £1800, offset ground crank, diesel rods etc. Seems to work well and lasts. And a head from Ron is around £1200 plus a cam kit. Modded dizzy is around £30 for Ron to do i think, just remove the vacumn advance etc. My first cossie engine cost £5000 inc dyno. That was a secondhand block, new forged pistons, knife edged crank, head ported and new guides and valve seats, BD14 inlet cam and standard exhaust. Plus a wrc 8 injector inlet manifold, dizzyless ignition, P8 ecu, which was £600 on its own. Its mostly a case of what you know and who you know Thats why i use Joe, he is very cheap and knows alot of people to get things done right and for the right price

Everything is included here... If you have a donor engine with some trick bits already on then cost comes down in view of that...

How much do you think all of your bits added upto with yours jo?
Admin Mk2Jo Posted April 9, 2008 Admin Report Posted April 9, 2008 Colin listed all the parts seperately for me so I could see the full breakdown . Mine was not just engine supply, it was supply and fit and removal of old engine, taking the car to Sanspeed to be dyno'd and Peter messing about for ages with the stupid Spanish Weber's (I think it's the Spanish ones that were poorly made ), test driving (or that's what he told me why he was hooning around the area ), fitting other parts (non engine), moving the battery to the boot, fitting electronic ignition, fuel pump supply and installation and MOT as well And for me it is a top job Personally, I think Steve at Vulcan must be competitive with his prices because he is well known and respected within his field There are lots of choices out there for people wanting a pinto and for those of us who cannot build our own
andypipe Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 From my dealings with Steve, i can tell you he is a honest and trustworthy person, with no bullshit
H.P.E harry Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 From my dealings with Steve, i can tell you he is a honest and trustworthy person, with no bullshit Im not saying he is not and didnt mean for it to sound like he is having someone on
Guest MK1gaz Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 The vulcan engine price is very good for the high spec of new parts used . It's also 100% complete , fully assembled and dyno run . Don't forget that he also has overheads such as wages for his employees and buisness rates to pay for his shop . I think an H.T. racing pinto costs about the same as well
MK2Ed Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 I'll tell you what though Jeb if you can splash a wee bit of extra cash it's worth getting a proper engine done by a pro... A 170BHP unit is a nice engine to play with - good fun on the road, good fun on the track and good fun on the strip... With none of the temper mentalities of the higher tuned units... With the right head, cam, 45's and compression you should see 170BHP all day long in a well built pinto

Guest MK1gaz Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 I think Kevs originaly had 460 bhp on engine advantages dyno . He's got more now though !!!!!!!!!

Jeb Posted April 10, 2008 Author Report Posted April 10, 2008 Still can't decide weather to go XE or pinto
mossy Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 people also forget that you dont have to go to a company to have an engine built.... I know people who have found private builders for much cheaper then a company, most proberly because of the overheads.
