countrybumpkin Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 i think the one you want is a baby atlas which i belive is mainly from mk1 capris
payne'e Posted August 13, 2008 Author Report Posted August 13, 2008 cheers countrybumpkin. do you know how wide the baby atlas is? cheers karl
kirk10 Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 standerd capri atlas lengh is 52 inches from back plate to backplate baby atlas lengh is 48 inches from back plate to back plate i think if you can only find a standerd lengh 1 then fostek can shorten it for you heres the link to them http://www.fostek.co.uk/services.html
Nettles Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 I'm running a baby Atlas on my '53 Anglia taken from a MK1 3.0L Capri. If you convert the brakes to disc it should fit under your MK1 escy. The Atlas length should be 48 inches from back plate to back plate. Good luck trying to find a LSD for it at a reasonable though, I'm still looking
Admin Vista Posted August 13, 2008 Admin Report Posted August 13, 2008 There are a number of different atlas axles around Wide Atlas with a 52" width fitted to mk2 and 3 capris Narrow Atlas with a 50" width fitted to mk1 3 litre capris Van Atlas fitted to 1600 single wheel SWB petrol versions up to about G plate Cortina Atlas fitted to the majority of Mk3 Cortina 2litre and 2.3 litre estates (easily spotted by void bush lugs) The correct term for the Mk1 3litre axle is in fact a narrow atlas, I believe a baby atlas is one that's already been shortened to 48"
bortaf Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 If i have my info correct? the baby atlas was a competition only item that has over time been confused with the narrow, it's the narrow thats on the Mk1 3.0 and wide is other cappa, cortina is wider again than the cappa one
Kalypzo Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 Thirded - I have a narrow (50") Atlas and the arguments I have had with knowitalls over the whole baby atlas thing is unbelievable.
payne'e Posted August 13, 2008 Author Report Posted August 13, 2008 cheers guys. spoke to fostek and they say they can shorten an atlas for me just gotta buy one now
julian.jay Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 Question for Nettles. What half shafts are you using in a 48 inch wide axle. I have a case 48.5 inches wide and I need half shafts.
livewire7116 Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 The reason they say to go for the mk1 3ltr capri axle is altho its 50" wide you can narrow the casing and there is enough spline on the shafts to cut them down. Been told the cortina axles are not best to use on escorts as for the reasons i cant say
Nettles Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 Question for Nettles. What half shafts are you using in a 48 inch wide axle. I have a case 48.5 inches wide and I need half shafts. At the moment I'm using the standard halfshafts that came with the axle. Later I'll probably get some hardened ones made, depends if I decide to narrow the axle.
fezza Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 cheers guys. spoke to fostek and they say they can shorten an atlas for me just gotta buy one now Hello mate, can i ask how much cash they want to shorten an atlas axle
Retromotorsport Posted August 16, 2008 Report Posted August 16, 2008 As has been said, and almost correct the sizes are ... Standard.... 52" Narrow...... 50" Baby ........ 48.5" (its only half and inch lads, but we would all love it ) The "Baby" is a motorsport part, and was avalible through RS dealers, allthough you can find some on early mk2 northern mainland european escorts as the Koln (crap) wasnt ready Just get any atlas you can and send it to Fossie(tom), at Fostek Eng, Tom and John will sort you out with what you need, not what you want.
