I've no idea whether it's already been done, but I do know that Ford managed to make 4WD mk1 capris using a Massey Ferguson 4WD system

All I can say is that if you have the budget then anything is possible and where there's a will there's a way.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Deffo can be done. I have seen a cossied 4wd Mk1 in modena green with bubbles. It was featured a couple of years ago in fast car I think.

Thanks for the replies, I'd love to see a pic if anyone has one.

It's not that I'm defo going to go 4x4, but since I've already got everything I need, it seems a shame not to.

Some people say don't do it, some say do. I'm still not sure yet. I like rwd for the sheer fun factor, but I like 4wd for the amazing cornering ability.

If I can keep the weight down below the escort cossie, then it should be an animal. I had the engine tuned to give me a 0-60 in under 4 and a top of 160ish, so in a lighter car with same transmission system it should be quicker.

I'm with you there mate, I had a Celica GT4 a few years back, it was uprated quite significantly and whilst there was plenty that could keep with it on the straights, not many could touch it on the twisty bits.

It is possible, we have got one coming up from Malta. 4x4 Escort Cosworth running gear...

Anything is possible if you put your mind to it

Ok, let me make a few things clear.

I've not decided if I am going rwd or 4wd. I like both for different reasons.

I basically wanted to know if it was possible, which obviously it is.

The budget doesn't matter, I've got a lot of favours I can call in to get fabrication work and painting done.

I just fancied something different.

I love mk1's, and have fancied one for ages, I was just never in the position to get one until now.

Now, I understand people love rwd, in an out and out drag race, with two cars of equal power and torque one using rwd and one using 4wd, we all know the rwd will win.

However, I've gone head to head against cars of equal power on the open road and had a great time leaving the rwd in my dust, 4wd cornering ability can't be overlooked.

You say in a head to head on the twisty stuff the 4wd wins... fraid not ..never has when all things are equal .. take the BTCC .. to entice Audi in the said they could run lighter than the RWD cars and the FWD cars lighter still. All engines where capped to around 300bhp.

You said you asked if it was possible .. well anything is possible with the right funds... thats how we get cars like the Zonda and McLaren F1.

All i was stating is the fact that i have seen 2 4wd conversions and if both cases the owners where dissapointed with the results .. one being a 105e Anglia and the other an Escort... lots of work for no gain..

Its very hard to do something original these days with cars .. I mean penske where raving about their 3rd damper on the anti-roll bars of their Alms car a couple of years back... shame the Gt40's did it first at Road America in 67.

Whatever you can think of to be different has at one time allready been done.

The reason that manufactures have 4wd cars in their range is to sell to markets that have bad weather.. snow for 6 months of the year, which is why Germans have 4wd and sell a lot to the scandanavians. Ford wanted a slice of that ..hence the 4x4 Sierras... and estates at that.

I'm not against 4wd it has its place, many a building site wouldnt function in winter without 4wd.. but as the vast majority of our driving isnt in mud or snow ...or even when wet with some peoples cars , there just isnt the need to have all the inherent drawbacks of 4wd.

if you really want to do something thats not seen a lot, do a version of the old supersaloons... get a Formula 5000 car and plonk an Escort body on top... big power, light low chassis and wishbone suspension allround.

At the moment Rob Crompton is trying to revive the old Thunder/special and super saloon cars.. he has located a lot of the old cars .. the Stars and stripes manta .. the F5000 Beetle, Baby Bertha, and Robs Vauxhall Belmont (5.7L V8) so yes there may be some cars out there that are mid engines V8's with saloon bodies... but when was the last time you see one on the road......??????

Now thats different
