antz Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 I was discussing this question with a mate of mine of the other day and neither of us could decide.. say that the gods shone down on you and presented you with a low mileage (under 20k) old ford with one owner from new and in time warp condition.....(for my sake ill say an escort but you can choose whatever you want) would you keep it standard to honour the car and its history or would you bring out the grinder and engine hoist? discuss
escort21 Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 Bollox to it...plenty of standards about so get the grinder out
Admin Vista Posted May 18, 2009 Admin Report Posted May 18, 2009 Take a look at the link under my sig for your answer Antz, ok two owners and 22000 miles but not far from your criteria.
antz Posted May 18, 2009 Author Report Posted May 18, 2009 thats a valid point vista. Looks a mighty project which is gonna be awesome when finished! . What made you go for the balls out modifying instead of keeping it standard?..just asking and not disagreeing with you or anything The way i see it is...what happens when there are no standard cars left? Sure people keep the RS2000's in concourse condtion but how many 1.1L's out there are still standard? Everyone remembers the RS's for the car they wanted but the 1.1L or such like was the car that everyone owned part of me would think...immaculate base to build the ultimate car!..but another part of me would think 'but its such a rare sight to see a satndard one untouched'

Well what's entertaining about an 1100CC van with 12" wheels, skinny tyres and crap handling? That's why I didn't keep it standard. The guy I bought it off said to me as I loaded it up "You're going to ruin it aren't you?" My reply was "Not in my opinion, I'm going to improve its looks, it's power output, its braking abilities it's handling abilities, it's strength and it's rust proofing. All of which whilst ensuring it can still function 100% as a van. So what's ruined about it?" Faced with an argument like that I don't think he had any come back.
antz Posted May 18, 2009 Author Report Posted May 18, 2009 thats a very valid point I would of been stuck on that comeback Its always good to get other peoples views on things
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 the engine hoist would definatly get used lol
richie_stix Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 i agree with vista, but i wouldn't like to be on an opposing side in an argumanet with him... to good at un-come-backable retorts!
5hane Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 sleeper it, i want to keep mine visually as standerd as i can, apart from rs2000 clocks and my 14inch (period) wheels i hope she will look standard (Bar the fact she will have over 3inch drop ) then build a mini racecar within the shell but i doubt i could do like the bloke in CF with the mk1 rs2000 (warrior one) and definatly couldnt buture a standard rs1600
richie_stix Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 i don't think conundrum is the word to describe this, a real conundrum is i need the internet, but to be able to get the interent i need to go on the internet! (actually happened to me, was annoying)
ZetecVan 2.0 Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 I'd drop a bigger engine in, but keep the bodywork standard.
NginEEr Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 modify less rust to chop and repair which saves money to waste on more power
trakevlyn Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 Ive kept mine standard as i decided it was just to nice to play around with and to be honest its only one of two standard 2door 1300s i know of, and i find it annoys some people
robertthorpe90 Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 grinder time!!!!!!!!!! standard is nice and all, but nothing beats a modifided ford!
Wessie Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 i'd use it as another new shell for a rally car theres been some amazingly mint cars cut up to be used as rally cars one even had the protective seat covers on it from the showroom as it has so little miles on

deltamal Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 Mine started off vg. condition totaly standard 1300 cc L spec,, thought I would just put a 1700 Crossflow in it, change nothing else, then wheels, 5 speed box, and so on, now it's a 2.4 atmo YB, with Nos, T5 box and 5 linked with coilover's, it just crept up om me! But, it could go back to standard without to much work, still got all the bit's, would have to weld in a new battery tray, and remove a few brackets, don't know why I would though
Smudger105e Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 Mine's bog standard, only non factory mods are radio (MW & LW only6) and the front spots. Its a one-off as far as we know, so I think it is my responsibility to keep it as it is. The shell in the garage is another issue...
mk1super Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 But i doubt i could do like the bloke in CF with the mk1 rs2000 (warrior one) and definatly couldnt buture a standard rs1600 With you on that one, first he hacks up a Decent Rs2000 then a Rs1600 More money than sense, and ok some will say ah but better to start off with a good base, i just think somethings are best left as intended, if i had the money i'd sooner rebuild one that needed work look at it this way gets another one back on the road
Mr Sam Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 sleeper it... cossie it on coil overs at standard ride height
bmxdave Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 I think some cars are best left alone. Everyone modifies to be different, so much so that its different to leave it standard nowadays. I wouldnt buy a mint car if it was rare and start hacking it up. Id much rather buy a rotten shell and save the good car and get another rotten one back on the road. Its much better to save one then hack a perfectly good one up. If it wasnt a massively rare car but still thin on the ground / sought after, id only go period or returnable mods. I wouldnt start cutting it to bits.
