Ok, I've finally had to accept that my daily drive (BMW Z4) isn't much use as a family car.:(

So I want something that's family orientated but unconventional, still reasonably quick, well equipped etc. I was thinking something German like and Audi, Merc or BMW estate, and then I came across an ad for one of these:

2005-Startech-Chrysler-300C-Touring-FA-1280x960.jpg

Enormous spec list and a Mercedes derived 3 litre V6 diesel with 218bhp and still manages around 35mpg combined.

Anyone owned one or been in one?

What do people think of the looks?

My mate has an estate, i much prefer the look of the estate to the saloon. Tbh the insides not really anything special compared to how it looks from the outside :?

It's an estate I'd be after, or I could get a boot mounted rack for the baby seat and keep the Z4 :mrgreen:

Love it Scott i want one of them one day they look like a Bentley in a funny way.

They look like they have a lot of road presence.

Ive heard the interior is very plasticy but theyare an awesome looking thing!

You could even slap a bentley grill on it and be a pimp :ykt:

I had one on hire last year, deffo lacking on the quality, especially as you have a BMW, They come with a Bentlyesque grill conversion from factory,

My personal choice would be a 530/535D E39 Tourer [i haveve one so I am biased] cracking car,145mph, and 36mpg in mixed driving, M1 thru NorthLondon and down to SE London in the rush hour stopstart grind

Good info there Ian, there's one of those 300C's for sale in a dealership about 10 miles down the road from me so maybe I'll go down there for a closer look at one tomorrow.

The E39 is the previous shape 5 series isn't it? phased out in 2004 and I'm really looking for something newer than that or I'll end up replacing it in too short a time. I'm tempted by a current generation 320d or 520d but to get one at the same sort of spec as one of these Chryslers is a LOT more cash.

I've been in one but am afraid I can't help you much Visa.

All I know is there is plenty of room in the back and front, they are very comfortable, good build quality and they go like stink! Although the one I have been in has been chipped so performs better than some others. I am not sure on the standard ones but this has full leather interior, and wood trim. A bit plasticy feeling but very good, and a lovely looking car.

This being said it is also a taxi so does a lot of miles, and the MPG on it must be good.

Just my two pennies worth! (The last two pennies I have...)

i had a go in one, went really well for a big car and they do make you feel safe  and you look like a pimp

i quite like the new volvos as a family car  might be worth a look

deffinetly one of the best looking modern cars around IMO as they stand out a bit and seem to be rather nippy, bet there full of plastic trim inside that comes off in a few years though

and bet they dont like corners

If i remember smokem (Dave) had one

I most certainly did.

Lovely car but it don't believe the MPG figures - on my run to Shakey last year I averaged 14mpg

Interior switches etc are crap but I still loved it. Had to go coz I couldn't keep up with the fuel bill (Diesel  )

That's a bit off putting, I get more than that from my 3 litre petrol!

Just had a thought, it's a Merc 320 engine as fitted to the M class, C class & E class etc. It must do more than 14mpg or Mercedes would have trouble shifting them, do you have a lead foot or something Smokem?

E91 330 tourer

The E91 is one we're considering but probably in 320 or max 325 guise rather than 330. As said earlier though, you have to pay a lot more to get one of comparable spec.

I do have a lead foot BUT - nowhere near as aerodynamic and it wouldn't surprise me if was heavier too. Bear in mind, mine was spankng new and so still tight although I got rid of it after 10,000 miles (It was averaging 15-16mpg then)
