Does anyone else on here have a fear of filler?

every time I see some going in to my project car, to fill tiny dinks and dents the past 38 years have given it, it makes me shiver.

Someone convince me its required and I'm being stupid.

Please.

nothing to worry about mate filler isn't what it was 15-20 yr ago it no longer sinks leaving "islands", and its perfectly fine if used for what its meant for, most of the horror stories about the use of filler stem from bodge artists contructing wheel arches and sills out of the stuff,

using it over a proper repair is fine

some people are snobby about its use but truth is if its used correctly you cant tell its been used

something like 50% of BRAND NEW cars have filler on them somewhere

A bit of filler for minor imperfections is fine, as long as it's not too thick or covering up any horrors. Also if the right type of filler is used for each area, there is nothing to worry about.

In my mind filler is the final perfection to an already good job

not every panel can be streightened perfectly with a hammer and dolly before fitting and welding tends to mis shape the metal, small ammounts of filler in the right places is just fine, i cant see the problem with people having filler on thier cars, as long as the area to be filled is properly prepared first its not a problem

if you watch such shows as american hotrod, they make a car perfect then take it to the bodyshop and filler the whole car all over to flat it back, and they are mostly top end show cars

If its just dinks and dents you are trying to rectify, and you really hate filler, then you can always get one of the PDR (paintless dent removal) guys to come to your house and lift them out...not cheap though, around £50 per panel......I know some PDR boys who are based in Bedford and they are absolutely amazing, some of the stuff i have seen them remove perfectly, you would swear it was a bodyshop job all day long, and yet they have repaired it using metal 'ding' bars and sucker glue and you would never know the damage was there......

I used to paint new FORD/LAND ROVER/JAGUAR coloured coded parts such as body kits, bumpers and spoilers etc.. EVERYTHING got filler, even the £100k Jags have it out of the factory

You've only got to watch the hot rod programmes on the telly, they cover the cars in it, if its not hiding rust etc.. its fine

As said before, it's only the complete rear arches or wing tops that are all filler and newspaper you have to worry about

Any perfectionist will apply a little filler to finish off to get the best effect.

Don't worry about it unless you want someone to "lead" all your knocks and dings, which is really not much different
