Hi everyone..

Tottaly Balled Off!

Been looking for work scince mid july last year and not had one interview scince! ive applied upto 50 mile away in every direction. in any and every industry! and not a jot!

Im 18 in april and for my 18th my dads buying me a cinquecento sporting (little 1.1 fiat) and i really want a job as it is. and having the car sitting on the drive staring at me is really going to piss me off big time! so what the fook do i do? - got a proffesional person to do me a CV and Spec letter and cover letter. which are really good. and still nothing's happening!! - thinking when im 18 - to claim jobseekers but how long does it last? - seen as i havent even done a months work scince i left school - 2 n half years ago!

how long does jobseekers allowance last? and do they give you help with job searches?

and is there anything as in the way of a restriction - as what you can spend you jobseekers allowance on? - eg they check what you have spent your money on? or is that just your money when they've given you it?

My girlfriend lost her job in December, isnt eligible for Jobseekers, even though shes work for 4 years paying NI contributions. Theyre a bunch of T***S and thats their good points.

thanks fishtail - dole, jobseekers all same thing... im not going to give up.. i do have an interview tomorow at my local college - for a mechanic's course. but i will still need a part time permanent job to fund other things. -my parents and family and freinds all say that once im 18 il be able to find a job anywhere. but if i cant then what?

i couldnt stick school as the teachers were arse's

but if i goto the interview tomorow. and they assign me to a course -ready from september.

if i cant find a job then i at least would have a college course to fall back on. - and also earn an nvq -which in turn if i pass will put my grades upto level C. which im sure may help. and if i find a job before september that's full time permanent work then i can explain to the college and leave the course.

What should i actually do? as i have experience of working at mercedes benz, firths truck and van, waldorf mot and servicing. and one other work experience at wastecare - which only lasted a week. - once id left school - all other work experience was unpaid and was through school and was related to a mechanics course i was on through school.

What should i do?

Although last night i did have a brainwave- yes i am sssllloowww

Here's one idea i could do - i think.

Goto the college interview tomorow and hopefully they will assign me to an nvq mechanic course. - which will or should start in september. -18th in april . begin on dole.and get help with searching for a part time job - with the jobseekers allowance - (rather than my dad buying me a car -buy me a 125 0) use jobseekers to get on the road eg cbt-insurance etc. as its cheapest form of transport with an engine. - start college in september(hopefully) and depending on when i find a part time job. -i couldnt keep on the jobseekers as id be in college.. reason for the part time job...

Good idea?

My grades are maths:F -english:E-Science-F

Argh, they're not fantastic are they. Did you just not try? I'm being careful here as some people have real reasons for not doing to well.

When I did my A levels, which you might have problems going on to do if that's all you got for your GCSE's... I bought my tech project from Ikea, copied the teachers IT work and went to 30% of the business studies exams.

I got two B's and an A.

Some people have issues with exams, don't let it get you down unless you really didnt bother.

In my eyes, coming straight out of school, on to the dole is a total waste of everyones time and money.

I don't know what kind of jobs you're applying for but if you apply your self, you can get something. It's like you're giving up, at 17! Don't!

ive been applying for everything from - cleaning jobs to data handling and laboring jobs. - ive been unemployed really scince i left school. in sense.

The reason why my grades are so crap is because. i was in with the in crowd and the school i was at judged people's predicted grades were judged on your postcode. besides that the teachers were nothing but bullies too.

Having to scrounge of my parents until im 18 and no other money coming my way. dole money until im at college and have gained a part time jobhave come away from the job seekers with a college course to go to and also have gained a part time job - that way i will only be on jobseekers for 3 months or not much longer.

what kinds of jobs would you be willing to do. when i was out of work at 17 i went and worked in a kitchen (wasnt a job i wanted to do forever) which kept the coin rolling in, it was pot washing to start with, then doing stores and freezers and some cooking, then working in the ice cream van and shops (all at the same place, local tourist attraction)

There is no point in applying for jobs with a shite CV and or covering letter.

I'm willing to help you, post it up online or email me and I'll edit out your address, name etc and see what people think...

Might not have been the best school but everyone takes the same exams.

Good to hear your parents are helping you out.

Have you tried finding your local builder... Maybe wait by his house at 5am in the morning, catch him on his way to work and say "I'm willing to break my back for you... give me a day to prove it, unpaid... I am the best you'll find..."

Have you sent your CV to all the local recruitment people in your area?

Have you dropped a suit on and gone walking around the local shops asking for work?

All the best,

Jon

Best thing to do might be to see if you can get to your local college and re-sit some of your GCSEs mate; no harm in trying and it might help you get enrolled on the mechanics' course after a year? Perhaps even if you just pick a couple of subjects, it'd show you're willing to learn and have adopted what they consider a 'mature' attitude?

Dunno if that's any help, a lot of my mates that didn't do as well as they'd hoped when we did our GCSEs did that and it did seem to help them a bit.

ive tried every kind of job im able to apply for and apply for any jobs that may not exist - eg spec letter see if there interested in. -cleanin,car valeting, kitchen assistants - everything i can do under the age of 18.

Thing is ive tried - best suit.Cv and spec letter- cover letter in hand. but nope nothing!

i cant upload or even send my cv or cover letter. - tried and didnt have the option to send it :? no idea why.

The gcse's - im hopping that tomorow when i visit the college for the interview - they will assign a course in mechanic's - that is an nvq - the nvq level 1 or 2 when i complete and pass the course at the end will change my gcse grades from what they are to a-c - depending on the pass percentage.

Il update you tomorow with what happens at the interview in the morning.

Thanks

For the help guys much appreciated!!

well...

For an update - i went to college this morning for the interview. and was discusted with the choice's i was displayed with. - i could either carry on with a job search or goto the college for 3 months to boost up my gce'se and then have to pay the 650 quid exam fee and then a further 500 pound tuition fee!!! :@

so with this in mind im filling an official report to the head of education's collge board.

also talking to my parents. instead of them buying a car there going to buy me a 125.. and im going to claim jobseekers for the 1st 2-4 months. try to get a job the best way i know how. if still no luck then going to sign up with recruitment agencies - well more of them. im sure i should get a job through an agency being 18.

whats your thoughts?

Get into college if you can mate; you seem set on getting a job but I'd say your best bet is to get a trade if you can so:

1) Get a crap job somewhere.

2) Speak to your parents about perhaps borrowing some cash if possible.

3) Save like buggery.

4) Apply for those tests when you've got the cash and work like buggery to get onto the course.

But it's easy for me to sit here and say that, having already done my GCSEs, A-Levels & most of my degree. Just have a think and good luck with what you decide to do.

Jeez over a grand to go back to college! Is there no help with that as you are on 6the dole? I would have thought they would try to get you back into further education and off the unemployed figure.

You were disgusted with them why? Welcome to the real post School world, it's tough out here and very little is free. The tuition and exams fees may seem like a lot but they cost a lot to provide and as it's you that stands to benefit from them, why shouldn't you pay for them?

Jobseekers allowance will pay for very little, it's not designed to give you a comfortable lifestyle, just to provide the bare essentials while you find work.

Well when you put it like that, I don't think £1,150 for 3 months is that good a value! At nearly £400 a month, you still have to get there, buy books and other stuff, and on top of that find money to live. I remember (and it will show my age) when I could have gone to college for nothing. I don't know what job seeker's allowance is these days, but say it's no more than £100 (topped up with other benefits like housing) that could be receiving £1200 instead of spending (where from, if you are on the dole?) £1150 over 3 months. Suddenly I can see why people stay on benefits....

what about the government apprentice programme?

http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/

I've got two lads at my place as apprentice mechanics, not sure how it works behind the scenes but worth a look I guess

Either that or join the forces and learn a trade whilst there and help out the country who is willing to pay your dole money

I was disusted with them for the simple reason. They are willing to take on foreign students with the equivalent grades to me. that cant speak good english (and no im not being rude about this) and how can they get in but a british citizen cant? - and not being 18 im not on the unemployed register. and dole pays 50 quid per week. but im not interested in the jobseekers.. il take it if i absolutley have to and not before.

I asked about what about other students that have non funding parents? and what about a alg - adult learners grant? but they said that, that wouldnt be an option as the course would then be free and they wouldnt make money from the goverment so i just thought oh this is bollox..a few of my mates are at college with non funding parents and they got in for free like 100's more so why not me!

if i was already 18 i would be on the unemployed register(reason why 16-18's arent on is because every year around 350 to 500K+ students that leave school most of these are unemployed over 2 years.. that makes around 900K people on the unemployed register that why school leavers arent on it. and that another reason for the school leaving age rising to 18.

As said before i will only use the jobseekers if i really am pushed and have to use it but to be honest.. i think its rather shite the way things have worked out with the college...

i told my parents what had happened and what was said etc. and they just said well... you were never a school type, like ya grandad wasnt he left school with fook all and look where he is now...(not bragin) so that kicked me over

the apprenticeships website. loada toss - used that for a year. trying everything from mechanical apprenticeships,to brick laying,to sparky, plumbing - the ones i can apply with in accordance to my grades. they expect people to find an employer thats not hit by the recession and that they will set you on as an apprentice. - well what King good is that? its a bleeding recession! companies are laying off their skilled laborer's! not setting on to teach folk.

I had thought about joining the force's - got as far as adsc -army development and selection centre - midloathian.. but the lifestyle wouldnt have suited me. its no life. my aunt was in the army, my uncle was in the raf, and my aunt's husband to be is a nurse in the army.

so im going to give that a miss.

and hey Fiesta Steve. - if it came to the jobseekers. YES YOU WILL! but not before  just like everyone else who's read this thread haha thats how determined i am not to get on to the jobseekers.

willing to pay dole money Mex? well.. for the past 2 years i havent been able to claim anything and have had to scrounge of my parents from clothe's -food- everything has been payed for by them. even when they were standing to lose the roof from over our heads.

its limbo land for anyone aged 16-18 with below average grades.

One other reason why the college wouldnt take me on. - they were looking through the progress file of my school life. and they noticed i have dispraxia - i was tested for that when i was 8! that why i was also peev'd off. they shoulnt be able to shun people with a (claimed) learning disability should they?

i was retested for dispraxia and adhd when i was 13 and was said that i didnt have it and it was down to tiredness. but obviously never updated the progress file

The plan now?

Registered up with a lot of Recruitment Agencie's - freind of the family has put my CV round every company within a 20 mile radius. so something has to come off that way...
