livewire7116 Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 How many people have problems with limited mechanical knowledge and finding someone to work on your osf with good knowledge of what makes it tick?
l j shaw Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 None at all, i find the opposite applies, i have 3 garages that, once we get over the micky taking, "look out he is here with another old knacker" Gladley work on the engine, totally understand whats going on, look after and then inform me the best route. At the end, they have that big smile as they will admit its the best work, most rewarding work they get, will also say, i get alot of work done for well under the going rate as they enjoy it that much. Ive also found an MOT inspector, that also enjoys older cars and understands why we keep them going, he like to see old RWD fords on the road. Thinks its one of them things you have to keep looking around for, lucky for me in this area i have found 3 and an MOT tester.
2.1tony Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 i agree with above , what i can do myself i do, technical things i get done by professionals who are enthusiastic about old cars so do what i want very passionately, oh of course it helps that my brother in law & nephew have their own well known established buisness
Savvi Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Looking at it from the "other side" i work on cars all day long but have old Fords as my hobby, as much as i'm happy to help out anyone i can on their older cars, i also need to pay the mortgage and feed the kids etc. I had a call this week from a member on here asking if i could help out with a car that didn't start and had charging problems. I agreed a discounted rate for him, as it was a bit of a drive, and absolutely loved working on a 3 owner Mk2 Cortina GT. In less than 2 hours we had it running tuned and tappets set. As i said to him i'd rather be working on the older stuff then modern cars.
barney9969 Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 my mate love s workin on my car ....he says its the only one he can not plug in to a pc......he can get his spanners out...
deltamal Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 I am lucky in that respect, got JRE motorsport, body, axle and gearbox mods, and JRE engines a few miles away, also a local garage who is well switched on to old Ford's for the MOT's and run of the mill work.
Silverback Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 I'm the same as most above and do the majority of it myself, if there's something I'm not too sure about one of my big brothers is usually on hand to point me in the right direction.

Never know if we get busy enough might even give up the day jobs!

bullittcraig Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 I do the work on mine mostly as been working on motors for about 15 years. Its so much better and easier working on the osf`s rather than all this new crap thats around now.
mossy Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 i try to do most of the work myself....But when it comes to things im not too sure about or not confident about...Thats when i give it to someone else. But even then, im VERY picky about who works on it.
MK2Ed Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Do lots of work myself but also seen: Vulcan, WPE, Retro & HT for specialist aspects...
