tom28 Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 anyone got any tips for changing them? ive even took the door off and i still cant bang the old one out, what a shitty design it really is.. this is on mk2 escort by the way. any tips much appreciated
over_head_cam Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 Freeze spray lubricant is good, then whack it out with a good drift Or a good soak up in penetrating oil and more of the same with a nice hefty hammer.
mexman123 Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 Took my mate 4 hours to get my drivers door off...that was with a proper original Ford pin removal tool,,,, He was proper pissed off.....on his way round, he said 'yeah, i'll have it out in no time with this'...... He was proper miffed after 4 hours..... Cost me a good round of drinks too......
Andrade Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 I took the doors off my anglia a few weeks ago, first took the door off, then tried unbolting the hinges. the inner pillar set of bolts seemed to have an endless thread, then i realised that the bracket inside the wheel arch that holds the thread in place rusted off so it was just turning around all over the place
tom28 Posted March 9, 2010 Author Report Posted March 9, 2010 wd 40 a flat solid punch / a club hammer thats what ive been trying to do mate, its halfway in now but still very tight..
jimbo Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 I'm feeling your pain. Tried doing mine on the Capri recently (using a removal tool) Shifted it a few mm. Now I've plugged up the bottom holes in each hinge and I've got them sat soaking in WD40. Gonna have another go this weekend. The question for me is "How am I going to get new pins in?" I was thinking that there must be a bolt with a long blank shank that is the right size
Fishtailparka Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 Don't know for sure about Capri sizes but M8 usually does the trick. I always use bolts these days, no issues with them.
mk14dr Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 Bolt on door hinges are obviously the win. I can have all of my doors off in 20mins

jimbo Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 I'm feeling your pain. Tried doing mine on the Capri recently (using a removal tool) Shifted it a few mm. Now I've plugged up the bottom holes in each hinge and I've got them sat soaking in WD40. Gonna have another go this weekend. I got one out!!!! I'm convinced now that the method (for stubborn pins) is....: 1) WD40 2) A good clean out/scrape with a stiff bit of wire 3) More WD40 4) A couple of whacks to shock/loosen it 5) Bung it up at the bottom 6) Fill with WD40 7 Leave 2 days 8 ) Fill with WD40 9) Leave 2 days 10) Whack it out Got an M8 bolt in there nowand got the other pin bunged up and full of WD40.

jimbo Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 For all those who need encouragement with their door pins, it can done
Yeomans22 Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 a bit off the topic, but where should you buy new pins for a mk2 escort? thanks
Fiesta Steve Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Guys i know what you are all saying my first car was a little fiesta it needed a full respray had to take both front doors off i was an apprentice mechanic at the time got told try a bit of heat got one side off the other side i had to cut both the fooking hinges off and weld them back on. But now i must say use a bit of heat but not to much. I might be missing something here but why not just unbolt the doors ?? About 6 bolts and about 5 minutes and there off ?? Are Escorts different to Fiestas ?

Are Escorts different to Fiestas ? I must admit if I was respraying the car I'd probably do exactly that, but for me personally, I was just seeking to replace the worn pins, so had to get them out anyhow. I figured the effort removing the pins was equal to the effort of rehanging the doors. I found that it was easier to get the pins moving with an appropriately sized coachbolt and a hammer, rather than the removal tool.
jimbo Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 a bit off the topic, but where should you buy new pins for a mk2 escort? thanks PM Antz on here mate
