I'm with the AA, it covers the driver not the car, as long as you are with the car you are covered, I got wifey a card as well on the family cover, and she does not drive, but covered if she's with a non member, not sure how competetive they are though, they brought the Beavertail back from Solihul last year, took a while but no real problems....

I am looking for full breakdown cover for the plastics and the osfs,so 4 cars in total as since we have moved to Cornwall we tend to cover alot of miles going back and forth to Sarrf London,Pod etc

For example Lead foot and i want to take the Cortina and the Capri to Classic Ford in June  ,we will also have most of the kids with us

Sumo..the banks breakdown cover is not adequate for what i need :(

I've been with the RAC for years and find their recovery system is much more efficient than the AA's Relay. I don't know if they still do but the AA used to relay you from county to county with a succession of vehicles, a very slow laborious process.

I'd also read on another thread recently that the RAC won't come out to cars over a certain age. That's not been my experience of them, nor is it stated in any of the small print just be sure and get personal cover.

Also, re the RAC, often the sellers that you see in shopping centres can give you better deals than going directly to the RAC or signing up online

I've got multi car cover with the RAC and they have been really good,

When I blew my engine up racing Darren back from Stevenage, they relayed it to any destination I told them too

I remember that day getting covered in smokey oil

I too am covered with the RAC on my bank account. I've never had a problem with them.

I used to be covered with the AA and as was mentioned, they do recovery on a relay basis. I once needed bringing home from Wales after coming back from Ireland and it meant getting towed to one point, then waiting for another tow truck near the Severn Bridge, then getting dropped and waiting for a 3rd tow truck at Membury services.

One evening I was out in the old MK2 Escort and I broke down on the M25. I called the AA and in the meantime an RAC truck pulled up behind me. He had a look and sorted the problem. I was then able to cancel the AA callout  He said he was happy just to have a look round the car  (I wasn't even an RAC member at the time)

Got a quote from the RAC website..for up to 3 cars it is £130

You've selected vehicle cover. Select personal cover with Joint membership including roadside assistance and recovery and it's £98.

As I said earlier, often the guys that stand at stalls in shopping centres can beat the direct internet prices.

I have had issues with the RAC in the past with the RAC, but they were commercial vehicle related (like length) so gradually I am using the AA more. Got recovered all the way from Wales last year with a big luton via the AA, went all the way with one great recovery bloke, he even fed me! It was a sub contractor though, not the AA themselves who I agree would have relayed me. We use the RAC for Euro cover, or the ADAC who are the best. It all comes unstuck though when you have to deal with the French recovery companies, they are pants and rarely even open the bonnet! In the UK I find the AA are more willing to have a look at the vans and do something, instead of looking where to pug the lap top in!!

The only problem I have with these companys is that they will not just recover your vehicle, if they can fix it they will.

My sister broke down not too far from home, she called the AA and they said it was the alternator and they could fix it there and then for about £200.

She phoned me and explained and said I have several spare alternators in the workshop, I said she could have one and I'll fit it for fook all as it only takes a few minutes.

So she asked the very nice man to recover the car home and he said no, not allowed, we must fix it if we can. So she told him to do one and I went out and fitted one myself.

Its all very well if your made of money but it was £200 she could have done without spending at the time.

I suppose if you are far from home you would be more grateful but they will try and rip you off if they can.

There doesn't seem to be any set rules with em, sometimes they will just want to get rid of you and call a recovery, other times (when you don't want them to) they will move heaven and earth to get it fixed.

Had the brakes seize on the crewbus. Got the RAC out, patrolman was adamant he would find some brake shoes (turned out the linings had come adrift from a rear shoe) at the dealership :lol: ! For a 25 year old Mk2 transit FFS! After an hour calling round he had to admit defeat (we had a brand new set sat at home).

Another time I had a a patrolman refuse to fit a brand new starter motor (3 bolts and a push on electric connection, I had no tools) cos they said they couldn't do such a thing at the side of the road

i've had bad experiences with the AA,

i was in my anglia and it started knocking its tits off and smoking and eventually siezed up. so i rang the aa and told the person on the phone that i work in the motor trade and i know that then engine has siezed and not to bother sending someone to repair it as the engine was knackered.

so 3 hours later a bloke turns up in a transit van and asks me to open the bonet to which i replied why do you need to open the bonet to tow it home, the fella said i used to work on these old engines all the time i might be able to fix it, ITS FOOKED i said, thats what i told the person on the phone did they not tell you that ??? nope he said i've been sent out to fix a vauxhall agila registration ahc 30b. ANGLIA not AGILA fooking numpties, so this guy buggers off stating there'll be a tow truck along soon, 3 hours later a tow truck turns up from an independant garage and takes us home. not happy at all waiting 5 hours with my 1 year old in the car. we since cancelled the AA membership IMO they are :shit:

another time i couldnt get the anglia started as i had a problem with the timing so i rang homestart and this lad came out didnt look a day over 18 as soon as he pulled up he was scratching his head, i asked him if he had a timing light "a what mate" i laughed at him then he gets his laptop out and asked me where the diagnostic plug in point is :banghead: i told him not to bother, shut the bonet and went back into the house in disbelief

Well i managed to see a RAC man outside Tesco today and got joint cover for any vehicle we are in for £84

That works out at just over £20 a car so i feel that is a good quote.

I explained about the quote online and he said that there would be no jobs for the likes of him if it was cheaper via the web.

Thanks all for your advice :ykt:
