greenfordpop Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 Most of you on here will agree with me that the price of fuel is a joke and to do a weekender or show in your classic car is starting to hurt the wallet. My idea is to combine power and economy by using a modern engine in an old car. Yes i know this has been done before to make your old classic be a bit faster off the lights, but what i`m trying to acheive is if you fancy a blast around town or go to a show 100+ miles up the road you don`t need to count the pennys first. My mrs has a peugeot 406 HDI which does 50 miles + to the gallon on a run. Thats more than twice what my 61 Ford Consul with a pinto in it! So i`m open to suggestions whats the best alround engine (petrol or diesel) to use and most modern engines being FWD please let me know what g/box can be attached so the back wheels can drive the car like god intended greenfordpop AKA Barry
GJUK Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 If someone tried selling a Mk1 escort Mexico HDI on eBay, I would not bid on it. It's part of the fun, these kind of cars are meant to drink fuel and make noise and smell of burning rubber. Unless its a daily driver I can't see the point. The car would lose its soul.
JAY PS Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 I heard someone was putting a 330d engine and box in a cortina mk1 ,thats a 225nhp motor thats diesel and turbo and best of all rwd!!
Nicks53 Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 But then what's the difference between a MK1 with a HDI engine being dropped in and a MK1 Zetec? Alright, one's Ford and one's a horrible French thing but with that aside, people do put newer engines in. I think that it can give a car a new lease of life if done right. I think the Zetec route would be a wise one, it seems that people know how to make that combination work.
GJUK Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 I heard someone was putting a 330d engine and box in a cortina mk1 ,thats a 225nhp motor thats diesel and turbo and best of all rwd!! But but but, its a diesel. *cries*

Stu_B Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 Zetec, Toyota MR2 (4age), Rover K series, Vauxhall XE can all be mounted to RWD gearbox's
livewire7116 Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 I heard someone was putting a 330d engine and box in a cortina mk1 ,thats a 225nhp motor thats diesel and turbo and best of all rwd!! The 330d puts out 184bhp but with a chip goes upto 216bhp, i looked into one before i got my passat
GJUK Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 lexus v8 for me 50 MPG's all day long, if you throw it off a cliff lol
zetecmk2 Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 has anyone looked into rwd'ing a mondeo 3.0 v6? i see them regularly go on ebay for under £200 hmmmm........
DAZZA Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 I agree that in certain instances and to keep the old school theme, noise and look, u just have to take a hit at the pumps. But there are so many tried and tested options, a zetec on bodies should be fairly economical, but given ur car, which should in great british hot rodding tradition have more than 4 cylinders anyway ... What about a late scorpio lump with a 5sp box. It drives most of its time on tick over and a mate with that set up says its 30-35 mpg on a run.
sambo Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Diesel..... in an old ford............ Misses the point of owning an old ford entirely.
SAF_Capri Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Supercharged M3 for me.. yes it will happen..well begin to happen this winter Lighten the car to save on fuel, only travel with what you need in the tank, for the cost of the engine transplant you could keep running the car the way it is if its only for the odd show and odd weekend.
Admin Vista Posted May 5, 2010 Admin Report Posted May 5, 2010 Big 6 cylinder inline engines are always going to give rise to problems with their length without big bulkhead mods. How about a supercharged four cylinder from the 1st generation Merc SLK's? The 230 Kompressor engine was a supercharged inline 4 with 197bhp as standard. Or alternatively, the SLK 320 V6 had 220bhp and spacewise should certainly fit easily under a capri bonnet. How different would this look when the bonnet was lifted?
4DOOR-SHERWOOD Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Honda K20A civic type R lump is my favorite.... if the YB gives me much more grief then thats its replacement!!!

X-pack-Glyn Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 I heard someone was putting a 330d engine and box in a cortina mk1 ,thats a 225nhp motor thats diesel and turbo and best of all rwd!! 320d which i have puts out 177 bhp with NO lag (200 chipped), more bhp than the 2 litre 6 pot offering from bm, and more torques than the 330i. Going buy how well it goes with cats and emissions shit on in my 1.5 tonne 3 series it must really fly in an old ford, its defo one id consider.
Beakster Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Either the Ford Performance Vehicles Boss 315, 5.4-litre capacity, 32 valves and double overhead camshafts, 315kW of power and 551Nm of torque.. Or, the Ford Coyote 5.0 litre, 412bhp and 390 lb-ft.
mk1super Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 A mexico with a tractor engine Ive never quite got people who buy an old car an moan about its petrol consumption,if you want a car thats economical buy a polo 1.4 tdi but dont moan that it lacks soul is no fun to drive and doesnt turn heads Oh as for modern engine transplants im in favour of them anything that makes you go faster or handle better is always a plus. Now someone pop falcon xr6 motor into a capri
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 i just love my pinto too much to change plus it period too
SAF_Capri Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 mm...maybe i should bin the beemer engine and go for the ford...just to keep those purists happy, fed up of pitch faulks at my house over the XE'd mk3
