rob-loves-osf Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 erm yeah... your download and upload as far as that goes is well.. kinda poor to be honest if you think 50k was dial up and your only getting 94k ( the K stands for KB/s) kilobytes per second. your affectively on dial up which your upload is even worse also, trying not to confuse you too much - if you look at your results it says 0.94MB/s - your not even a full megabyte of speed - hence the 94kilobyte speed has your internet web pages been opening slowly recently or before winter? as im thinking if your running broadband via your home telephone line, that maybe the bad weather could have damaged the phone line as your ping is ridiculously high! ping means your trying to send data in this case we shall say your trying to download 34kilobytes of data and it is taking 1.3 minutes to download as their are interuptions and to put it simply "confusion or disruption in your internet or network) an average ping should be anything from 15ms to around 115ms (time taken to respond and open a web page) rather than your currently waiting around 1-2 minutes to open web pages.
Admin Vista Posted February 8, 2011 Admin Report Posted February 8, 2011 Sounds like you need to discuss this with your ISP mate
rob-loves-osf Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 wouldn't have thought this was down to his isp (unless steve is on fibre optic broadband) as the isp is just giving a connection from a datacentre. if he uses his telephone line for his connection eg ADSL broadband OR ADSL max. then depending on his router or modem reading on his downstream decibel reading (if its high, its the phone line at fault) as this should be around 2db or at highest 7-8db anymore and it will lag like a pig. if its found out to be higher than 7-8db its the phone line at fault. as even if steve did download 24/7 or whatever, his isp wouldn't throttle him to this extent. i have just sent steve a pm offering to help. with those speeds above i would say its a deffinate damaged phone line if he connects with his telephone line. another reason why i say i believe it would be a damaged phone line already are because of his stupidly high ping time of 1-2 minute average web page loading speed. @ vista, your ping isn't bad as it would on average take to load a page of around 40-50 miliseconds to load most web pages. where steve on the other hand would have to wait 1-2 minutes for the same page to load as the speeds that steve has posted are affectively "dial up speed "
banarama Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 i wish i could help ,all i no about computers is turn on/ebay/old skool ford.
rob-loves-osf Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 i wish i could help ,all i no about computers is turn on/ebay/old skool ford. i was like that once but got bitten by the computer modding bug and been the same ever since lol surely theirs some computer gamers and geeks on here with upgraded desktops ? think we should start a thread of "show us your desktops" lol
Fiesta Steve Posted February 8, 2011 Author Report Posted February 8, 2011 Could the modem be at fault or unlikely ? Hopefully my new memory stick things will be here tommorow !
D-FENS Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 Rob what do you think of my speed test,my pc has been slowing down recently and i have never been happy with my broadband speed. download 1.91 mb/s upload 0.75 mb/s ping 83 ms mp3 5mb 21 secs video clip 35 mb 2 mins movie 800 mb 56 mins I,m with orange and i have a wired connection as i had loads of trouble with wireless connections .
rob-loves-osf Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Rob what do you think of my speed test,my pc has been slowing down recently and i have never been happy with my broadband speed. download 1.91 mb/s upload 0.75 mb/s ping 83 ms mp3 5mb 21 secs video clip 35 mb 2 mins movie 800 mb 56 mins I,m with orange and i have a wired connection as i had loads of trouble with wireless connections . yes LAN (ethernet) is far better than wireless. to answer your question your speed isn't too bad and your ping is ever so slightly higher than i personally would like if it was my network, but for general surfing the net and watching the odd youtube video, you should be fine. here's a few "shitty ISP's" ive had to deal with in the past Orange, customer service is ok (as the basic tier 1 customer service tech desk are read from "scripts" people with instructions written down on basic home netoworking and ways of solving day to day issue's. their speeds now are dropping back in the market as they do not offer fibre optic broadband and they do clamp down on people downloading "P2P" eg,torrent AOL - i currently use these (as for what i need) as carphone warehouse do not use traffic shaping or throttle their customers for downloading vast ammounts of data (says different in their contracts but we are on unlimited contract but, they never slowed us down during peak times) customer service.. not brilliant as its in india (tier 1 is anyways) again like orange, tier 1 means call center staff reading from paper. carphone warehouse own AOL UK,TALK TALK and TISCALI. the better ISP's seem to be at the minute BT (but expensive) with the 10mb fibre optic broadband and VIRGIN is rated as top best you do get throttled on downloads if you download 24/7 but its not to the extent that you can't surf the net or anything else,it just means your "torrents" download or upload slightly slower than they would at say 3am. customer service - easy going,friendly,with.... UK call centers!! only downside (the occasional drop out,one minute you might be on OSF next minute your not online for a couple of minutes) other than that virgin seem to be the best on the market. the thing is to remember, as people demand more and more from the internet such as watching TV and online gaming and generally sending mass data such as 500gb or more, speeds have to be increased meaning the smaller people on lower speeds get pushed to the back of the cue and eventually find it hard to connect at all forcing you to upgrade your internet service package (bit like if you tried going on dial up now) you won't be able to connect at all. if anyone reading this thread is having problems with their broadband speeds READ ON!! step 1 are you using your "telephone line" ? ( you can find this out by looking at your phone master socket, does it have 1 DSL filter to which you have your phone and modem OR router plugged into it? example : if you have your master socket and the little ADSL filter like above, you can fit a "speed enhancement face plate"!! (i did this and is done in 5 minutes!) step 2 look at your master socket faceplate (the one with just the open fitted to the wall) if you have one that says BT OR T OR unkown that splits in two you can simply buy the BT I PLATE link on how to install the BT I plate http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/3838-video-guide-how-to-install-a-bt-i-plate.html DO NOT LISTEN TO WHAT HE SAYS ABOUT OPENREACH ALREADY HAVING THE IPLATE FEATURE BUILT IN!!! for those of us (including me) have the OPENREACH type faceplate you need this kind of faceplate http://www.maplin.co.uk/adsl-plug-in-faceplate-filter-384038 no need to fiddle with any wires, simply remove the original screws "gently" sliding off the original 1 socket faceplate and again"gently sliding on the new 2 socket faceplate" and using the screws that come with the new faceplate. to which you can throw away that old DSL filter as its no longer needed. how and what does this do? to put in to car terms you have your phone line come through your wall into the faceplate which has 1 or 2 mircofilters (air filter/s) to which then you would "normally" have your DSL filter plugged in to which again that has yet another microfilter (air filter built in) .. in affect your running 2/3 air filters on 1 carb.. restricting air flow, in this case, affecting your data flow in lay mans terms.. by removing all the "un-needed" filters and only having the one that is built into the new faceplate, your running one K&n air filter which takes out all the noise on the line, clearing it up,making the data more direct! (like the air rushing through the air filter, while still filtering all the nasty stuff with none of the draw backs. i did this when i first moved to where we are now, when we first moved in to our new house we on adsl broadband were getting around 1.2MB/s download with a ping of around 700ms when i fitted the new nte5 faceplate (bought from mapplins the exact same as above) my speed increased on upload and download! from 1.2MB/s to 4.1MB/s with a ping of just 9ms and the noise db from standard faceplate was 237db after the new faceplate was fitted this dropped massively to just 2-3db anyone need any help or info just let me know ( i do work 2pm-10pm) shift but am willing to help anyone when i can Rob
rob-loves-osf Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Could the modem be at fault or unlikely ? Hopefully my new memory stick things will be here tommorow ! its not entirely impossible. but i would believe that if this was the case that you wouldn't be online at all. and would still put £5 on the phone line being damaged or needing a faceplate to clear up the line. Rob
Fiesta Steve Posted February 9, 2011 Author Report Posted February 9, 2011 Thanks for the info Rob, think I'll look into the face plate
GJUK Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Rebuild it if it's slow. Recovery disk or find a local techy to pop windows XP back on to it for ya. Easy peasy
Andrade Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 I do this kind of stuff every now in a while on friend computers, this is the approach I usually follow: 1) Just after turning on the computer, press CTRL+ALT+DEL then go on performance. If everything is bright green, chances are your computer is old and cannot cope with all the things you have installed. This would generally require hardware upgrades, but not without trying the below first. 2) Look at the system tray (the stuff next to the clock). These are most the things that use up your Memory while on idle. Go through them and you can probably right-click and turn off the ones you don't need. 3) To prevent the system tray stuff to load again, go to start / run / then type msconfig. Untick the stuff you don't need as shown here: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/index.html 4) Go to start / control panel / add remove programs and uninstall any software which you don't need. This will free up some hard disk space. 5) At this point would be ideal to run a virus scan, since you would have freed up some memory for the antivirus program to work with. Do a full system scan (which may take a while) and clean up anything it finds. 6) Do a disk cleanup to remove any temporary internet files and so on, this frees up some more hard disk space. 7) De-fragment your hard disk. I only mentioned this at this point since it would be more productive to use this tool once you have actually freed up some space on the hard drive. 8.) As most of the others sad, ditch internet explorer and start using Google Chrome. It's free, fast and easy to use. You should see considerable improvement at this point. If it's still very slow I would suggest backing up your stuff and re-install windows XP. This is a bit of a pain since you lose all the things you had on the PC, including programs, settings, files, saved passwords, and so on.
GJUK Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 Seriously, if you want to speed it up. Wipe it, rebuild it and start from scratch. No amount of uninstalling applications, defraging and tweaking will help as much as rebuilding it (software). Jon
fezza Posted February 12, 2011 Report Posted February 12, 2011 Steve has asked me to reply on here for him as his computer has now gone bye bye It is in the process of being repaired and should be back in buisness before long he also said cheers for everyones help Some useful information and tips there Rob,could come in handy as mines been running slow recently too

Andrade Posted February 13, 2011 Report Posted February 13, 2011 so what's not needed on start up? as the missus laptop takes ages to get going Pretty much anything that you don't use and that isn't related to hardware drivers, like volume control it varies depending on each individual PC so its difficult to give a list, however the general rule is that one
Fiesta Steve Posted February 17, 2011 Author Report Posted February 17, 2011 As Fezza said my 'puter went tits up completely. Unfortunatly it could not be repaired and decided to get a new one so here I am using what seems to be the worlds fastest computer lol !! Thanks again for everybodys help it was appreciated, shame it didn't work out as my bank account is not so good today I do have another question for anyone that may be able to help. I wanted the info retrieved from the old hard drive as it has a lot of pictures of the kids growing up etc.. that my missus is upset about not having. The person who was trying to fix the old 'puter said despite trying he couldn't get the info from the hard drive, something about it being corrupt or something like that. Has anyone got any ideas how we can get the info off ??
flyingbanana Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 hard drives can be touch and go but with the error you say you should be able to access it and get the data off it....but not always....program i always use to recover data is recover my data http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ once again you should be able to find it on a torrent site...as the free trial only recovers a certain amount of files
omj624p Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 It's best not to try and get them off yourself. Get someone who works in IT to help you. Trying yourself could make it worse.
fezza Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 Nice to see your back online Steve P.S.you made that call yet ??? pm me
Fiesta Steve Posted February 19, 2011 Author Report Posted February 19, 2011 Yes I have m8, you have PM
