Yes, so do we but there will be lots of people with projects on the go who do not intend on insuring them until they are on the road.

For example I have a friend who owns several projects as well as a couple of dailys. He will not have the classics roadworthy for many years yet so it will be a drain on his finances. :(

i dont think you have to insure it if it has SORN under this new thing they are on about although dont hold me to that

This is the one that been going round for a while

If and when it comes in YOU will be required to get insurance for any vehicle that you own regardless of whether its a project or road legal !

The bugger is my traders policy no longer covers any classic car made before 1980 !

No you won't. As stated earlier in the thread, this rule will only be applicable to cars that have an in date tax disc. SORN the car in question and it doesn't need to be insured.

I keep mine insured whether they're on the road or not. Most OSF's are worth too much not to these days.

What I heard was that they have to be insured regardless of being SORN or not.

Was wondering who else is aware of this new rule that they want to bring in next year.

From the DfT webshite:

The continuous insurance enforcement scheme will provide a new fixed penalty for people who ignore official reminders that their insurance has expired. This will apply to vehicles that are not declared as being off the road through SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and not insured. Continuing offenders will risk having their vehicle seized and destroyed.

Where a motor vehicle isn't used on a road or other public place, there’s no requirement to purchase insurance cover for 'on road risk' as long as a SORN declaration has been made. The continuous insurance enforcement scheme is expected to come into force during 2011.

i.e. SORN doesn't need insuring, taxed does, even if you don't use the car & it's parked on private property. Typically new "guilty unless you prove you're innocent" arse-about-face system: they'll just send the letters out based on what their computer says.

It would be interesting to see if any motor insurers are willing to insure a car cheap on the basis of 0 miles per year (e.g. fire/theft from garage cover only).

Does everybody realise that if you SORN a taxed car, it makes the tax disc invalid? You have to return the disc for a refund, and you lose the month you send if off in, plus a fee. If you don't return it, the car will be seen as still on a SORN or unlicensed if you take it back out on the road without re taxing it. You can't have road tax and SORN on the same car. Another way of getting money off you!

Its already started and its nonsense, you do not need to insure cars that are offially off the road.

Yep lots of right answers on here

To sum it up, if your car is taxed it MUST be insured. If it's SORNd then it doesnt. Simples.

Makes sense really, it assumes if a car is taxed, its being used on the road (why would you tax it otherwise) and therefore needs insurance. Its mainly to combat the HUGE increase in people insuring cars, buying tax with the insurance documents then cancelling the policy, So it looks like to the passing coppers/DVLA ANPR cameras the car is fully legal.

But like just about anything else, only for the law abiding citizen who registers the vehicle as theirs.

A good point well made.

when you think about it, it sounds fair. at the moment we all pay about £40 a year to cover those that aren't insured and if they're not taxed then the insurance is invalid anyway.its not as if we tax then sorn them every other week. just means we can't road-test when the car's officially "off road"

Do you honestly think that if everyone insured their car correctly yours or my insurance premiums would go down ???

My Hire and Reward Comprehensive Mini Cab Insurance went from £112 to £235 a month in 2 months, and when I gave up cabbing in May my Hire and Reward Third Party was £248 a month.

I ended up going back to the Trade Insurance Company I used a couple of yerars back, and got my Passat insured with any vehicle in my possession or control for £706 a year.

Just to add, I had reason to enquire about this and rang the DVLA's dedicated advice line. I was told not to panic (we have a taxed truck I hadn't added to the new policy) as it takes 2 months to flag up as not insured! So don't panic people.
