Ok so I think I’ve opened my mouth a little too quickly without thinking

My best friend is a big Jap car nut and has recently swapped his 200sx for a 06 Scooby running 320bhp.

Japs are not really my thing and nor are old fords his and after a big argument in which he said my car was a old nail I’ve bet him 50 quid that I’ll beat him down the quarter mile next year.

What do you reckon my chances are and what engine should I build?????

i had a 360bhp classic wagon a few years back. quick car. your mates impreza is quite a heavy car and sometimes run out of puff , top end. depending on what work has been done to it. good luck mate. get tinkering on your car.

p.s. he does have AWD though :hush:

I've beaten a few Scoobies, 2.4 nasp Cossie YB with 60hp nos jets, that's in a full weight Cortina, a similar engine in a stripped out Escy would be a serious Jap eater!

So if the scooby is going to run 14s a decent xflow or pinto could easily beat it.

I think the drag racing bug has just bitten me hard :)

you will need very tuned xflow to run 14s, a good pinto will need a fair bit of work to run a 14 imo

I'd say you really need 200hp, a linked rear axle with a slipper, a pair of slicks and put it on a massive diet. That should give him a run for his money.

Standard UK Scooby will run 14.4. Jap import will run 13.4 ish. If it's 320bhp I would expect it to run low 13's (maybe even high 12's depending on the model) so that should be your target

Fieldy - if it's an STi type UK then he will have adjustable diff and can whack all the power to the back if he wants to :thumbsup:

Don't forget that if he is a shit driver, he may not even make the 13's lol

Was going to say, make no mistakes a tuned Scooby is quick car. My mate had a classic shape that ran around 320 bhp and that did 8 runs of 12.9 in a row at Pod!

Nos. You need Nos.....two of the big ones.....and Joe, you need it by TONIGHT!

Made me laugh that!

Budget? Current spares? A decent YB will cost you £big. If you have NOS then he's entitled to it. If he has a turbo then you're entitled to one. With the absence of info - Pinto? Also think about power to weight ratio, traction and final drive....................

Some cracking comments :lol::thumbsup:

So I’ve already started with the diet, rear seat, sound deadening, carpet, heater and bumpers have already gone. The car originally weighed 785kg and a reckon I’ve taken out at least 35-40kg so far so after putting on a fiberglass bonnet and boot lid as well as Perspex rear windows the overall weight could be down to around 715kg

Going for the Colin Chapman ethos of adding lightness :)

The budget isn’t huge so every little helps and while it would be great to have a Harris motor or n/a Cossy under the bonnet realistically I cant afford them.

So any engine with around 160bhp would be a good start (xflow probably) and would give the car 209bhp/per tone

Any help how I can further improve this formula would be great

Me personally ive lost some weight but the cortina is about to have a cage fitted so a power gain is defo on the cards for me, Ive seen scoobys run and they seem to fail at the start and people tell me its all about the the first 60foot.

our crossflow had 163bhp and run 13s , aim for that and you,ll give him a good run for his money

get him to take that girl in your viewing profile and that will slow the scubby down

Maybe a true 150hp unit will be in with a chance but its going to cost about 2 grand plus the price of carbs/ITB's to build one. If you could find one 2nd hand it would be cheaper but that could prove to be a minefield.

It will be cheaper and easier to get 150hp+ from a Pinto
