Toby Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Very interesting idea but FWIW I don't think Retards Club would stop people posting on here and agree that it's likely to attract traffic, not that I know, as I've never been on it! For me there are a few things that limit my posts... The new look definately reduced my visits, and not for any reason other than I must be a crazy OCD creature of habit who fears change! I personally miss Gaz's rubish. If you take it all in humour - or at least take it with a pinch of salt he wasn't bad for increasing traffic - trouble is, I suspect he is happy arguing the same record on his own site, and he seems to get a few nibbles and lurking on there, it's still a good read - possibly akin to rubber-necking a car crash. The old banter - agree it's much better to have some humour on here, but Gaz offended, and although I NEVER intend any of my comments in a malicious way, it's all meant to be for fun, people do get offended. I didn't realise I was being offensive in the past but I have had some of my post deleted a few years ago. For me this set the feel of a police presence. I don't like that enviroment so my posts reduced from that point on, certainly my banter did. All that said, this is the best OSF website. It's informative, friendly and THE place to look for news, up-coming events and to catch up. I suspect the good weather has an effect on people doing stuff, rather than posting. I hope this doesn't get deleted!
Toby Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Oh, and one other thing. My cars been out of action for nearly 3 years so that has reduced my connetion to the site. It is however, at the body shop now, so next year I'll be at Pod again - maybe not early next year, but some time before September! I need to be at Brighton Speed Trails....I feel the need....the need to take my gearbox out at the coast!
aden Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 the email seems to have done the job! lot busier on here today and a lot of the old faces back on

And there was the small matter of the 'Taj Mahal' you have been building in your front garden for your beauties ! puddy ps. you will notice Toby never posts on a Tuesday normally , Tescos must have come early tonight .
D-FENS Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 I try to come on here and buysellcortina every day but dont post a great deal as i have little or no knowledge of working on cars .I love driving and looking at OSFs but hate working on cars .There is a definite movement against people who pay others to work on there cars. All this built not bought bullshit comes up over and over again .I would rather pay someone like Colin Ashton to do work on my car than fook something up by doing it myself .OSF used to be a lot busier than buysell but the opposite is true now IMO .No way has OSF had its day
Toby Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 Lol Puddy! Thats predictable! Tesco did come 2 hours early. I am now full of cherries and hot cross buns watching BBC 4, the program on Gp B rallying. Awesome cars. You going to Brighton Speed on Sat?
walsh253 Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 I stopped coming on here because i think it got to the stage that if you didnt know certain people you didnt feel welcome, and new posts then slowed down and it all got a bit same same.As for the price of cars/parts being to much so people wont come on here is rubbish as i bought a vw camper last year and they are not the cheapest and the forums i go on are very busy.(just my 2pence)
Admin Vista Posted September 5, 2012 Admin Report Posted September 5, 2012 Everybody is welcome on here, It may seem otherwise but I can still count the number of people I really know on here on the fingers of my hands
SmokeEm Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 I must say, I no longer own an OSF but I don't think I have ever been made to feel unwelcome on here - fat pisshead that likes his creature comforts, yes - but unwelcome no
zetecmk2 Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 i love it on here!!! i go on other forums....but this is home! don't know why, something to do with beer this is the only forum i'm on where i've been in a bar with alot of members we go camping, we build cars, we chat about cars, take the piss out of each other and never get offended etc etc. i don't know if this is the correct behaviour and attitude for a forum.....but it is the social aspect that makes this feel like "home". ohc may only drink tea, thus providing some substance to the theory that it is the "drinking" that makes it home, not the "alcahol" and w ayne, last month at yours.....we were looking at a mk3 escort you were working on oops....we're currently restoring one bring back gaz...just for the reading has anyone tried an "online party"? we set a date, get trolleyed, in the comfort of our own home, and talk shyte in a dedicated "party" room
puddy Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Lol Puddy! Thats predictable! Tesco did come 2 hours early. I am now full of cherries and hot cross buns watching BBC 4, the program on Gp B rallying. Awesome cars. You going to Brighton Speed on Sat? I know you so well ! Might be down in the afternoon on one of my motor bikes, otherwise deffo be at the wingspan on Sunday for the osf show inmy mk1 tina. Heard that a certain cossie powered bright orange mk2 mex should be putting in a rare appearance as well, even if it is on a loader ,poof puddy

And if you have limited knowledge of these things what's wrong with paying someone who does ? As for not posting much you could reply to posts of members cars pics or a resto project thread, even with no knowledge of the work involved anyone can respect a build by another member.
lotusless Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 I stopped coming on here because i think it got to the stage that if you didnt know certain people you didnt feel welcome, and new posts then slowed down and it all got a bit same same.As for the price of cars/parts being to much so people wont come on here is rubbish as i bought a vw camper last year and they are not the cheapest and the forums i go on are very busy.(just my 2pence) Please don't feel that your not welcome here, of course on ANY forum people that know each other or go to meets together will chat. the site when it is busy IS really fast and posts do drop off the pages quickly but that is the same on any busy forum i think. I bet the VW forums are busy the bloody things are everywhere !! there are 2 in my road, but think of osf as an exclusive club and who wants to be like thousands of other people anyway ?
DAZZA Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Im not a great fan of Escorts, pretty much taken up by Forum and Magazine coverage, so was pretty bored on here and with the mags as nothing was flicking my switch. Went to a 100e forum.... totally overdosed on that. Lurked about on a few Rod sites, no matter how hard they try.... it really is about the most expensive car. Retrorides and a few others are great, as they dont care about money and bragging rights the variety is just off the scale. But got bored of that too. ..... however, always come back to OSF....... its like a comfy pair of old slippers Cant see that Retards Club or any other book will change the appeal of this Forum.... its the holy grail
The Transplanter Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Can I stick my oar in Im reletively new around here, but im not new to forums! I have owned and run a 20'000+ member car forum for 10 years now I felt the need to keep upto date by having a FB page, but under the same breath I didnt want to distract from the forum. So I basically set it up for news and anouncements and keep it locked, so only my own (or mods) posts can be replied to. The only time we open it fully is if we have hosting or database problems on the forum so the banter can continue Even by doing this I have noticed an increase in numbers on the forum, even though we already own the google no.1 spot (even above the manufacture lol) So I would suggest you use FB to your advantage
Savvi Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Sounds a good idea, also i know somehow you can get certain post's to appear on Fb automatically ? Out of interest what forum do you own T ?

Dont know about that but im sure its possible depending on the forum software, im pretty much a FB virgin so still learning myself my forum is http://www.vwcaddy.com
Skimmer Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 The feeling welcome bit has been mentioned to me before at one of the meets i go to and sometimes i feel that if you dont know such n such or when we were at etc etc and try and get in on the chat etc you are what seems cold shouldered , and at some meets or events i have personally noticed that if your not known a few wont even get into any form of discussion about there rides even to the point a few years ago i waited for some time with my lad to buy some merchandise from the OSF stall and was totally ignored and as there were about 10 or more chatting away we just walked off after about 10 mins .....and the camping at the Pod when i was told this is for OSF and basically told were all mates though was put on this forum about all welcome to get a large OSF camp which i thought was funny as i had my MK2 Cossie van and my lad had his Pinto'd 100E and im sure the person i spoke to had a newish car though not a Ford ....Not a rant just an observation ........This is a good forum with plenty of genuine users though i dont think the Faceache link think does it any good if users go there ......
Savvi Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Guessed it was Vw ............ my mates just joinned there he said you also have tiers for memebers so the more they post the more they see ? Would like to know how you manage with that and how easy it is to set up if possible, not for here but an engeering forum i mod where we are having problems with site raping and not popsting. The Retards Club thing we've just done (the royal we ) in the general section just to get more site traffic, in the general section a post is automatically posted on Fb as well, think they were able to decide what goes on etc. I'll try to find out a bit more about it if you want ?

That's terrible I am sorry you have come across a lack of friendliness so far .... it is difficult sometimes when people are hovvering and not saying anything but I understand it is equally difficult when you are the person hovvering and not knowing when or if to join in a conversation Please make sure that if you come to any more of the shows or meets that you actually ask around for one of us Admin team and we will be more than happy to introduce you around to people ... we don't deliberately exclude people And for the past 3 years I have been in my plastic Scooby at Classic Ford OSF camp so mine is not even a FORD !!!! (although this year I did try to get there in the RS but it gave up on the way ). Are you coming to the Wingspan Show on Sunday 9th Sept down near Crawley? Many of the Admin/Mods will be there - please come over and ask around for one or all of us

We dont have a tiered system as such. we used to get a lot of people joining to advertise their shit and or linking to ebay! So now you need to have 200 posts to advertise on the forum, or you can fast track by paying £5 to have your account upgraded, this helps towards hosting costs etc. We are also on the cusp of creating a club, but we are still working the ins and outs of that one. Charging can be done by setting up paid subscriptions, we use Vbulletin which is quite powerful so I guess it will depend what you can do from software to software
Savvi Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Ok thanks for that Ours is http://www.ifitstuff.com quite big in the Auto electrical trade, there's loads of installation details behind closed doors, we do have a system where you have to prove you are in the trade with referances etc. If anyone needs to find a local sparky you can search here: http://www.ifitstuff.com/wp-vehicle-engineer-uk.php Not all of them deal with general electrical / rewires but some do. It may come in handy if some accidently connects jumps the wrong way round ..... not that anyone would ever do that would they ...............

I understand totally where your coming from. Coming from a forum where everyone knows me to one that im unknown can be a bit daunting, and im paranoid about this happening on my own website, so i try to make sure every thread gets an answer when im around to do so. But its not always possible But to be honest I have not particualy felt it on here like on another simular FORD site where a lot of posts get ignored if your not in the "clique" I would also like to say that when im at VW shows I do get involved catching with good old friends who I dont see from one year to the next, so if someone new turns up we may seem unacessable or in a clique of our own. But this is genuinally not the case and welcome anyone to come and get pissed and talk shit with us and im sure thats the same with the OSF lot I have not had the misfortune of meeting many OSF members, but I did have a good chat with owner of the Monza blue MK1 with the ST170 and the owner of the Yellow cossied MK1 at santa pod this weekend, and both were very open and happy to chat
Skimmer Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Jo thanks for the reply though as i said it was just an observation not a rant or moan as were all human , ive been doing this car modding game for well ever ( had me 1st Escort at 15 n now im 49 ) still modifying cars most of the time now with my son so i know alot of car types and most years do 10 or so weekend shows with the tent so thought id join the OSF lot and put names to faces , still all in the past now so im not really a lost sole and certanly not new to the old car scene That's terrible I am sorry you have come across a lack of friendliness so far .... it is difficult sometimes when people are hovvering and not saying anything but I understand it is equally difficult when you are the person hovvering and not knowing when or if to join in a conversation Please make sure that if you come to any more of the shows or meets that you actually ask around for one of us Admin team and we will be more than happy to introduce you around to people ... we don't deliberately exclude people And for the past 3 years I have been in my plastic Scooby at Classic Ford OSF camp so mine is not even a FORD !!!!
