Admin Vista Posted July 31, 2014 Admin Report Posted July 31, 2014 I was at Culdrose air day today and enjoyed fantastic displays from multiple classic aircraft including the Vulcan, the only flying Canberra in the world a pair of Hawker Hunters, a Spitfire and a Hurricane along with multiple other classic aircraft and helicopters. The two planes I was looking forward to the most however, were the Douglas Skyraider and the Hawker Sea Fury Sadly it all went horribly wrong for the Sea Fury, this aircraft had recently undergone major restoration work, who knows if it'll ever fly again http://bcove.me/r4z0p4d6
classicwhitey Posted July 31, 2014 Report Posted July 31, 2014 bugger, it really sadens me to see things like this. i really want to see the vulcan - will have to look up its flying programe
mexicansteve Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 Saw this on the news last night. At least no one died.
SmokeEm Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 I watched the Vulcan at Farnborough this year. Was so close it seemed I could touch it!
Admin Vista Posted August 1, 2014 Author Admin Report Posted August 1, 2014 Same Dave, it flew directly overhead and opened its bomb bay doors. Quite a spectacle, my 5 year old: "whoa, that's AWESOME!" As to the Sea fury, the tragedy is that the RN historic flight had three airworthy ones but over the last 20 years all three have now been lost to crashes, the previous ones were an engine failure and an undercarriage failure. I hope this one is repairable as the previous two were written off.
classicwhitey Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 i would think they kept the old airframe to use as spares if they have lost two aleady. ive seen worse crashes returned to airworthy condition. here at North weald we had a mustang that had only just been finished - landing gear failed on maiden flight but its back in the air now. love the sound of a supercharged merlin engine overhead.
Ken B Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 bugger, it really sadens me to see things like this. i really want to see the vulcan - will have to look up its flying programe Best be quick cos its gonna be grounded soon in 2015 because no one and I find this really odd, as apparently no company at present can or has the capability to rebuild the engines which have to be done next year. 1
john_3.0s Posted August 16, 2014 Report Posted August 16, 2014 We had the Battle of Britain flight over the house today two lancs and two spitfires, bloody awesome. Got the camera out for their return journey from the air show at eastbourne but they took a root about a mile further east so wasn't worth the pic, will try and geth them tomorrow when they come over
iandq Posted August 16, 2014 Report Posted August 16, 2014 i am hoping the two lancs will be at wings and wheels next week, the 2nd one is the only other airworthy one from canada, two lancs hadn't flown together since the 60's before this week. re the vulcan engines, this is true, there is no tooling left as far as i know, this is also true of the conways as used in the 707 and vc10's, i used to work on conways at croydon for the raf tanker and transport fleet, but the place is closed down now, and all the tooling and spares gone, when the engines left are life extinct, then the planes will be too, sad really they are beautiful aircraft. i was lucky enough to gain acces to the old factory at croydon a couple of months ago, the new owner let me in to have a nose around, really sad seeing the empty place and remembering all the activity that went on there....
