bigbadsquare Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 Guys been looking for a mk1 for some time now, don't want , well can't afford Mexico RS etc... Got a 5k budget and lots of cars about but all seem quite ropey, I know I won't get concours but surely a complete car that requires reasonable work is achievable for this price????? What can I expect to get for my budget ??? Maybe the cars I've seen are better deals than I think. Your thoughts would help. Thanks Paul
Admin Vista Posted October 16, 2014 Admin Report Posted October 16, 2014 I think £5k should get you a reasonable mk1, though it may be a 4 door rather than a 2 door. However, "should" get you and "will" get you are not necessarily the same thing. If a vendor has convinced himself that his shitbox is worth £10k then nothing will persuade him to drop to half his asking price.
bigbadsquare Posted October 16, 2014 Author Report Posted October 16, 2014 I've seen a couple ok ish both 2 door , but I'm not sure how much work will be required after you clean all the underseal off. Just a bit scared of buying a dog , might just stick to the mk2 .
irishtorag Posted October 17, 2014 Report Posted October 17, 2014 you still will find it hard to get a not concours but show standard mk2 2door for 5k you will get well patched mk1 and mk2 shit dogs for that sort of money imo or good 4door cars which imo are just as good as all or most mods from 2door cars also fit 4door cars kenny

I can mod and improve in time. It's the starting point I want .
meXEco Posted October 17, 2014 Report Posted October 17, 2014 Tried selling mine a couple of years ago-good spec needs a little bodywork doing but certainly not a patched up dog and couldn't get the 7500 I wanted so its tucked up in storage now. Considering the spec and condition ( most parts where new/reconditioned) I thought it was cheap as I knew the car inside out and spent considerably more on building it. Can't please all the people all the time lol. Up your budget and buy mine!

BigBubba Posted October 17, 2014 Report Posted October 17, 2014 Have you considered just buying a shell? You'll get a tidy shell for that sort of cash, and the rest is easily bought used over a period of time. It'll take an age to do, but you'll be left with a cracker
Savvi Posted October 17, 2014 Report Posted October 17, 2014 I was offered a south African import a few weeks ago for similar money, not mint but looked good for the money. It was a 1600 X/flow was £5250 with delivery from Scotland to me in Oxford. I decided against but think it's still there, was advertised on the Retards Club pages.
bigbadsquare Posted October 17, 2014 Author Report Posted October 17, 2014 I'm looking at this one too Colin but , hate the idea of handing cash over based on pics .
Admin Vista Posted October 17, 2014 Admin Report Posted October 17, 2014 So don't, go and see it? Scotland isn't that far away.
bigbadsquare Posted October 18, 2014 Author Report Posted October 18, 2014 So don't, go and see it? Scotland isn't that far away. In all honesty Vista I'm not sure that would help me as I'm still new to this and was lucky with my mk2 as I got a good she'll , but it was luck only . The reason for the original question was to try to gauge what I should expect a 5k 2 door to be like. Etc .... Complete ? Running? Mot? Welding required etc... Due to my own lack of experience, didn't want to let a bargain go just because I couldn't see it due to being over critical . Getting loads more pics sent of the SA bumble bee so we will see . Cheers Paul
Moderator Rally Pack 2000 Posted October 22, 2014 Moderator Report Posted October 22, 2014 I think £5k should get you a reasonable mk1, though it may be a 4 door rather than a 2 door. However, "should" get you and "will" get you are not necessarily the same thing. If a vendor has convinced himself that his shitbox is worth £10k then nothing will persuade him to drop to half his asking price. Thats a very notable point. You often get sellers that have been told by a friend how this or that is worth a fortune even if it isnt and the seller is seeing dollar symbols that simply arent there and will sit on it for all eternity till they get the amount they were told it was worth. A good complete 1300 Mk1 2 door will fetch approx 2,500 pounds here in Australia. Our market is being totally plundered though by a group of Irish buyers with money to burn and buying up everything they can get their hands on to the detriment of the local market. They are even buying stuff that is meant for the local cars as well with no UK relevance. Its creating a bit of animosity unfortunately.
Lightweightsteve Posted October 22, 2014 Report Posted October 22, 2014 If I could offer some advice, finding something 2 door for that money will be hard work - you could well find, like mine, that it may look pretty, but hide a multitude of sins (I'm into about £3000 extra on mine now, plus my labour), so be very careful. In hindsight though, I do love the damned thing, so don't regret it at all - just be careful, as buying cheaply WILL cost a chunk to put right. 4 door is a good option though, as I think that you could get something quite nice as you won't be paying the loopy 2 door premium.
stuartp Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 mine needs a bit of bodywork and a few mechanical bits sorting and there's no way I'd let it go for £5000
bigbadsquare Posted October 29, 2014 Author Report Posted October 29, 2014 Viewing a mk1 on Saturday, 1970 2 door 1100 base , looks good and in my price range wish me luck!!!!! I will have to sit on it for a while till I can upgrade the engine.
