cant be any worse than some of the multipatched escorts driving arround, tbh i would like to see one in the flesh.

Great for rally men and saves many more original escorts from being thrashed round the forest lanes and destroyed

leaving originals to be rebuild with maybe quality parts / panels

Heres a thought, dont put the lottery on 3500 times and you could just go and buy one

The one thing I can see coming out of these is the escort lovers who do not have access to welding equipment or the skills to rebuild a shell it's an ideal opportunity to own a rust free car. The swap after painting could be done by most competent DIY mechanics. Be it a good thing or bad thing depending how you look at it gets more old fords back on the road. A lot will depend on the quality of these shells if they will be frowned upon as a bag of crap don't touch or its got one of those shells worth buying. Like the heritage mgb shells some rave oh it's got a heritage shell it's the dogs danglies but for those people in the know, one of those now let's start and make things fit properly being they are a multi model shell. We will have to see.

Well new = new.. 7 grand is imo a bargain. I can not build a decent mk2 shell for less. No need for soda blasting, acid dipping or whatever.

Nothing to worry about to get that old undercoating of..

Hard as it is, no rust at all.

And ready to be build, no months of bodging, cutting, welding and so on needed.

If it was a Capri I went over immediately to get one.

Your assuming there any good though. How many people have you heard moan about pattern panels?

Thing is you buy a pattern panel and then fit it and i may not fit perfect? There you have a complete thing, you can see the gaps , lines etc! Got to be alot less hit and miss, plus its new metal. A total shed today cost a fair few quid, panels more on top, add in your time or paying someone to sort? Got to be worth the 7 k? Thing is you need to see one in the flesh and have a poke around, we're all just guessing?

That's what I thought - if I add up what I've spent on dipping, NOS panels, welding, transport, etc. £7000 isn't bad - assuming the quality is good.

I'm curious about the legality. I think to the letter of the law you have to have a shell from the original manufacturer. But equally you can replace every panel one by one and that's legal. :-s

Yes my thoughts to . I was wondering on how you would register it . Q plate or find a log book . 7k sounds great . But dvla and vosa my have other ideas . Love the sound of a new shell but would it have to be made as a new car like kit cars etc . I've emissions etc bumpers . Lots of things to find out .

On that subject of registration, if you have a log book should be no probs. How do all the mgb,s do it withe heritage shells. From what I can recall if you could not assatain year of manufacture it got a Q plate which to me a new shell bits from whatever year you cannot do this so to me a Q plate ? I knew of someone who's car was confiscated in a police raid a RS Cosworth to be exact which was an ex rally car returned to the road. During its life of a rally car lots of parts and panels were changed and because they couldn't find year markings on all or most of the parts it was returned with a Q plate. It's value fell even further through the floor. Also into the bargain whilst in police custody for some 9 months the sound system was stolen! Talk about rubbing salt in the wounds!

I must admit I was thinking of anyone with a rotter which needed extensive work, then a new shell would be a good option. I hadn't thought of building a new car - I suppose it would be like a kit car, you'd have to do BVA/SVA type test and get a modern number plate.

That being the case all or most original ford mk2 rally cars should be on a q plate as most were wrote off

or reshelled anyway. When they were sold on very few did have the start with shell and the often changed

reg number from race to race.

But if they had a genuine Ford new shell it's OK.
