BaileyMex Posted January 17, 2016 Report Posted January 17, 2016 As per title. WANTED: A decent Type 9 - 5 speed Gearbox (2.0 or 2. and a RS alloy bellhousing Preferably close to Surrey/Sussex. Thanks in advance
jamie956 Posted January 17, 2016 Report Posted January 17, 2016 New rs2000 bell housings are quite cheap now £145 @ RWD motorsport. 1
BaileyMex Posted January 18, 2016 Author Report Posted January 18, 2016 Thanks Jamie It's the Box mainly
jamie956 Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Have you thought about the RX8 gearboxes, been looking my self for a project and a RX8 5 speed and a adaptor plate seams cheaper than going T9.
colr6 Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Jamie have you checked the ratios on the Rx8 box through what ever diff your using and wheel size. Some one had done some calcs and unles your running 3/54 diff 15" wheels 1st gear is useless. Then of course will have effect on overhall effect on sixth
BaileyMex Posted January 18, 2016 Author Report Posted January 18, 2016 Have seen bits on the RX8 box But sticking with the Type 9 using the new hydraulic clutch slave cylinder conversion
aardvark101 Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Type 9 (2.0l) box first gear 3.65/1 Rx-8 box first gear 3.76/1 not a lot in it really, you could launch in second with the Mazda, 2.269/1 so 13" tyres 3.9 diff would top out around 47mph @6500 rpm and then you still have another 4 gears giving you 127mph max
jamie956 Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 The 5 and 6 speed Rx box's don't seam a million miles from the T9 pending what one you end up with, RX 6 speed 3.76, 2.26, 1.64, 1.18, 1, 0.84 RX 5 speed 3.48, 2.01, 1.48, 1, 0.76 T9 (4 cyl) 3.65, 1.97, 1.37, 1.1, 0.82 As you say the 1st in the 6 speed may be a little low but would make good for some rolling burn outs, I guess you just need to enter the different ratios into a on line calculator and see what your going to end up with, Rx boxes come complete with hyd clutch already,
robert maguire Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Hi Bailey Mex, new t9 hydraulicd slave cylinder.I would like to know more?? Any suppliers etc?Cost ?
colr6 Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Rx boxes are getting there own price bracket now because of the conversions availiable, when you consider most people change first in the t9 to 2.9 or even down to 2.6 to make it a better box it gets even further away from the rx box plus reported bearing failures in the rx info from rx forum and would not contemplate a cheap box to repair. I considered the conversion but stuck with the t9
BaileyMex Posted January 18, 2016 Author Report Posted January 18, 2016 Hi Bailey Mex, new t9 hydraulicd slave cylinder.I would like to know more?? Any suppliers etc?Cost ?You can get them from burton and FleaBay around £130 ish from memory
jamie956 Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Yer the 6 speed boxes have shot up recently but the 5 speed's are still cheap £70 to £100 on ebay, I see your point about the ratio's i guess its down to the individual set up i guess if you where on 15's it would be better.
robert maguire Posted January 19, 2016 Report Posted January 19, 2016 I break mx5,s ,mainly 1989 to 2005 and if the gearboxes are anything like the engines from 2006 on keep away from them. And Mazda genuine bits are mega expensive .I know people say the engines are same as Duratec etcetc but almost every one on them throws leg out of the bed (conrod out through block) or big ends go at minimum.Forums advise its down to Mazda having too long service intervals but quality has to be dodgy with so many mx5,s, from 2006 only, ruining the cranks/conrods/blocks.Early mx has BP seriecs engines....bulletproof.(almost) I wont be fitting one to my zetec escort anyway.....stick with old T9. 1
BaileyMex Posted January 20, 2016 Author Report Posted January 20, 2016 Not many good ones around at the moment. Unless you want to shell out over £250 for an untested one that's sat in a shed for 10 years lol Anyone tried the New ones from Burton or any decent reconditioned boxes?
colr6 Posted January 20, 2016 Report Posted January 20, 2016 That's FLEABAY for you! Only problem with getting a recon one is they need an exchange or pay another premium 1
Fern370 Posted January 20, 2016 Report Posted January 20, 2016 There's a 2.8 type 9 on Retards Club on hot rwd ford page
BaileyMex Posted January 20, 2016 Author Report Posted January 20, 2016 Thanks Fern Just found the page and will take a look
BaileyMex Posted January 23, 2016 Author Report Posted January 23, 2016 Contemplating just buying a new gearbox now as nothing has really come up that feels right. Burton sell them and there is also a chap on eBay selling them. Thoughts???
colr6 Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Hi Bailymex, if your going for a recon one give Chris a ring at BGH. Great bloke will sort it out for you and ratios. Few on here have his boxes and say there the dogs danglies. I've got one but not used it yet so can't give an opinion. Or I've got a t9 which I got off another osf member and was assured it was good £185 plus post if that's any good also got a quick shift lever £45 plus post
BaileyMex Posted January 24, 2016 Author Report Posted January 24, 2016 Hi Col Yeah I've seen that BGH website and good to hear others have used him. Will take another look in the week at it. Where are you by the way? Just in case
Joe Little Posted January 25, 2016 Report Posted January 25, 2016 The bloke who built my gearbox does type 9's with a 2.98 first conversion for not a lot of money and his work is first class. He has his own alloy bell housings cast too which are reasonably priced... Steve at Sp components. 01527 894232
HotRodMatt Posted January 25, 2016 Report Posted January 25, 2016 While on the subject of gearboxes has anyone had any success with the MT75 'box? I'm sure there'd be more about if they were a good conversion but is it their weight/ratios/size that stops them being used?
