Just had tyres fitted to my rims today on fairly new and up to date equipment. Yokohama on the front and Nydanz on the rear. Here's the odd thing though:

Cheaper Nydanz tyres went on and balanced up fairly quickly. Guy said the tyres seem ok.  I went for these, as I plan on giving them a bit of grief when I fit a new diff.

More expensive Yokohama's went on and both of them were an absolute bitch to balance. Could be the rims, but the guy fitting them seemed to think it was more likely to be the tyres.

My new Falken ZE-912 205/60r13s arrived. Its cheaper to get them interstate and ship them than get them from a local dealer as they have collaborated to price fix.

My Mk2 is white with black bumpers spoilers window surrounds stripes and door handles. I thought making the inside of the Capri Laser wheel spokes black too but thought it would be too much but now I see them with the car they seem to silvery. Should i paint them black too do you think?

Tyres are now toast. Not much decent stuff available in 205/60r13. All I could find are obscure Chinese brands or Falken Ze912s. So looks like its pretty much the Falkens

Toyo R888R from Demon Tweeks. Look sporty but are road legal. Got em on my Capri in that size.

Black seems to be the way to go then.

It was only after I fitted these wheels off my Twincam that black spokes may have been a better option on a white and black car. They are called Enkei Cross Fever Racing wheels made in Japan. Back in the day it was the closest I could find to RS cross wheels. Very solid and well made with chunky spokes but due to sitting idle for so long have a lot of surface corrosion. They even came with chrome valve covers with Enkei written on them. The wheel nuts screw into the spokes themselves rather separate on RS/Laser wheels.

Im not sure what centre caps to use with the Capri Laser wheels though. I have a set of RS centre caps but the RS club get very upset when you put RS logos on a Rally Pack, (even though they are the same car except for the pointy nose and better seats) Our RS2000s were simply a mid 79 trim upgrade to try re-invigorate the Escort line but a bit of elitism crept in (as it does) and the RS Owners club wouldnt allow Rally Packs in as it didnt have an RS logo on them. Effectively locking out Australias version of the Mexico. I was permitted to join because I had a Twincam as well but as I often pointed out it wasnt an RS or had an RS logo either. Car Clubs can be INSANE! I steer away from them after my experiences with the RS Owners Club of Australia. Put me right off car clubs altogether. But I digress, what to put on the centre caps? I dont think the Ford logo would be any good, suggestions?

Put the RS centre caps on and screw anyone who criticises. It isn't their car anyway is it?

I was asked to join as an RS Club that meet up on Wednesday evenings, but after hearing some of the stories about them, I swerved it.

Anyway, as much as I like my RS, I have just made this badge up for you to put on your wheels.

From what I've heard of the RS owners club the RS stands for Right Snobs and not as originally intended

LOL in actual fact in Australia the slang term RS mean Rat Sh*t! So if you said to someone this or that was RS you meant it was broken or useless. Often when your car broke down or whatever you would say, 'Im not going anywhere the motor is RS" meaning it was f**ked and couldnt be repaired. So when Ford Australia introduced their top of the line sports model with Mexico Bumpers and spoilers they refused the RS tag because its immediate association with the slang term that it was somehow broken or f**ked. They couldnt call it Mexico, firstly because it had a 2lft Pinto engine so would confuse the fact with the Euro Mexicos but more most Australians were unaware of the special Rally to Mexico and the remarkable win by the Mk1s there that enshrined their name. Hence their compromise was calling it a Rally Pack as with its spoilers and split bumpers it looked like Rally Cars. In Graham Robsons books in the UK (Ford File and others) he pictures one and refers to it as a flat nosed RS2000 which effectively thats what it is. It remained the premier sports Escort model for 2 years till in mid 79 Ford Australia tried to revamp the line and bring out its version of the droop snoot RS2000 along side the Rally Pack. Thanks to the popular British TV series the Professionals the RS tag became more socially acceptable although the Rat Sh*t jokes maintain to this day. It wasnt equipped with Radius Arms or Alloy sumps and bell housings and it just was given identical sports suspensions to the Rally Pack a plastic nose and better seats. One could argue the lighter Rally Packs had a greater power to weight ratio but the drop snoot gave higher top speed (Although top speeds came down more to the variability of engine power and condition than a few kph gain from the nose based on personal street performance comparisons at a time that was shrugged off as boys being boys and you didnt end up on the 6 o'clock news, but in no way as this street racing officer).

So the RS owners club wouldnt allow its Mexico equivalent in to make the group more exclusive. Strangely the last RS concourse I went to they only had two RS2000s on display and three Sierra Cosworths a car that was never officially sold here. Their elitism shot themselves in the foot!

2700 Rally Packs were made compared to 2400 RS2000s but they were available for twice as long as the RS's were. Today most Rally Packs are faked as the originals were long since broken for the bumpers and spoilers. Only a keen knowledgeable eye can tell the real ones from the fakes. A few years back a show of small Fords the best car in show award was given to a fake Rally Pack. I didnt say anything though LOL

I should add to the long post above that the Rally Pack was homologated under FIA A-5036 (AUS) as a Flat front RS2000 that permitted racing of RS2000s with a conventional flat front. There had been other ways to use the flat front using an evolution of the Mk1 RS2000 homologation but the Australian homologation under A-5036 cemented the Flat Nosed RS2000 as a distinct car in its own right. Yet as stated previously the Australian RS Owners Club wouldnt accept them. Their response was that they have to go by UK rules but there are none in the UK for them to even acknowledge the model to make rules for. If that not bloody mindedness I dont know what is!

There is a bit of history you didnt expect on a thread for flat spotted tyres LOL

suppose you could apply cutting off your nose to spite your face as it were. ( flat front RS) by not recognising it as a car if you know what I mean

I see what you did there. :-)

Suppose the speedo will need recalibrating with such a low profile. Being of hose construction the in the wet capabilities will be good

The most popular brand of Garden Hose in Australia is called Nylex (Not sure if they are in the UK as well) but their slogan was

"Its Nylex or its Nothing!"

And you have (or had) a brand of sellotape called Durex in Australia right? They must have been painful to remove after "doing the deed" None too leak tight either I would imagine?
