I've hit a few obstacles whilst putting the interior back together on my Mk1 Apache Escort and as always will appreciate your help :-)

Door cards

How on God's earth are you meant to get the door card clips in to the holes at the back of the door card? I assumed they were all a standard fit so bought these :

What a mug I was! These come in packs of 12 but there's 16 needed per front door and they cost me £7.49 for 12?!?? [top tip: don't buy parts when drunk!]

I can get 30 of these bad boys and for only £2.99

Hmm, as I type this I reckon I've found a solution to my first problem myself. Buy the cheaper ones and make the holes in the rear of the door cards bigger!

Rear 1/4 panels

I assumed these would simply be a matter of pushing under the "retaining" lip on the car. Oh no!

Any ideas?

Also, there are many lugs on the car that seem to have no purpose as they fail to match up with any holes on the door cards despite them coming off prior to being reupholstered!

Head Lining

This is the work of the devil. I get how it slips through rods in the car roof and that it needs to be partially retained by the window/screen rubbers but what are these for?

Door rubbers

I bought these and they're "meant" to be specifically for MK1 Escorts. Yeah right and I'm the pope.

The inside ones are about 17cm too long [no problem they can be cut] but the outside ones are too long also and I can't see how they can be cut whilst still fit. Also, these were purchased but I see absolutely no way for them to work:

Any help greatly appreciated. At this rate I might just leave the interior out altogether!

Thanks

Keith

Re the door card clips, the holes should be figure of 8 shaped with a larger hole and a smaller hole which corresponds with the diameter of the clip. Push the clip into larger hole then slide over into smaller hole simples.

Re rear 1/4's. Yes slide the card under the top lip, and there should be 3 or 4 holes in the card for push fit clips, but the clips I bought for mine where slightly too small for the holes in the rear 1/4 metalwork, sold as mk1 items but didnt fit...I think the lower rear fixture had 1 or 2 metal tabs that went thru card and folded over.

Re headlining, never done one but I thought those clips where used to hold the h/lining in place around the window apertures whilst the glue went off, I believe it needs to be glued not just held by the window rubbers.

Re door seal clips, if you look inside the the top of the door aperture where the glass comes up there should be 4 or 5 tags on inner side and outer side where those clips slip onto, then the inner and outer seals clip into those. Very fiddly to do. And my new rubber outer seal was too long also and needed trimming around the 1/4 glass upright metal bar.

You'd have thought after going to the trouble of remaking the parts that they would fit but oh no....

I tried that and broke two clips :-(

My thoughts exactly. It seems really dumb. The inner one will be a simple "snip job". The outer requires a lot mode faffing about! I'd like it if just once, just once I bought something and it fitted!

OOh. I was planning on using bulldog clips. These would appear at first glance to be a right nightmare to remove once put in place. There's a chance they could tear the headlining during their removal I reckon

Like I said never done one before but have heard they are a bit of a nightmare to do nicely. And I'm not sure if those clips are for what I suggested but I cant see them being left in place as you'd never get the rubber on, so bulldogs would/should be easier?

whilst never having fitted a headlining, i have removed one, those clips hold the headlining in place in the channel above the rear quarter windows and are a permanent feature, my suggestion would be to get a trimmer to fit the headlining, i did and he also said the repro bushes for the rods are no good, so we had to get some made to match the originals

you will find that most repro stuff for escorts is rubbish unless its made by stage 1

those inner window seals look awful, so i never tried to fit them, i had to source genuine ford for my own satisfaction

stay clear of repro front quarter rubbers as well, they are too small

ive yet to try my outer seals

Easier said than done I'm afraid but I think I'll keep looking. The ones I have currently can only be described as rubbish!

That fills me with joy as I need to replace those as well :-(

You wouldnt be the first pope to own an Escort. Jean Paul II owned a light blue Mk1 1300L. He flogged it for a quarter of a million with a papal blessing!

Actually that was an error off the top of my head it was a MkII GL and sold for half a million quid. Surprised it hasnt been mentioned in the ridiculous prices thread. Lucky it wasnt an RS or a 2 door otherwise it wouldnt have been affordable!

"The car came with what Kruse said were several papal possessions: carved wooden rosary beads, a box of wooden matches, a candy tin and a dashboard medallion bearing the likeness of St Maria Goretti, patron of youth, young women, purity and victims of rape"

^^ That would do it for me. Sounds amazing. NOT!

Aren't pure virgin choir boys also a rightful possession of the average Catholic priest?
