I work in housing and you would not belive the amount of red tape involved in tracing via the other departments. I have a few contacts in the local SNT and they are usually helpful when it comes to tracing owners for us. I will update when I find out anymore.

I've had similar I'm cases in the past but not with a car that's been off the road for over 25 years.

The compound it is in has been bricked up for 15 years or more so it has been where it is for a long time

just hpi it!

HPI wont tell you who the legal keeper is, police wont either, they have to have a valid reason to use the ANPR system, and can loose their jobs over mis use of it, and DVLA make all excuses not to tell you, that car would have to be dumped on your land and photographic evidence of it given that its on your land, for them to give you the owners details

normally, you can apply for a V5, they then write to the current owner, if no reply then you get the V5, but when its been off the road that long, my understanding is, you have to jump through a lot more hoops than just applying for it, if the owner replies and says no, its mine, and youve taken it, then the police will get involved, for the reasons you then dont want

It is dumped on our land so I do have a genuine reason to request details from the police. Hopefully they might have something on record. If not I will go down the DVLA route.

If it was in a Council garage then surely someone must have been renting that garage at some point? Ergo it wasn't "dumped" when originally parked there. Do you have access to the records of who last rented the garage?

The car looks eminently savable, shame some bellend smashed all the glass though.

What's up Ray, you got some paint left??

lol colin

just cant see it bangered lol

i was never a fan of the MK 2 back in the day

perhaps it is the colour Colin, or perhaps im just getting soft in my old age, but for some reason that one i like, dont know why

must also be a sucker for a challenge

its only a 1300L

question being, will the DVLA issue a V5

The compound it is in has been abandoned for 15 years minimum. If there are any records they will be paper archives and likely destroyed by now. The renovation to the garages isn't going to be for around 12 months so I have time to try tracing or registering. There seems to be enough interest to pursue it.

There is no chance of it coming out before as the area is sealed with concrete blocks at the moment. I have only put a metal pedestrian door on one side.

First of all I would like to say thank you to mfcfan for taking the time to try and find the Escort a home and to offer enthusiasts the chance to buy the car, a lot of people wouldn't care or go to the trouble.  As Ray has shown an interest I think he should have first refusal also it would be going to a good home (take a look at his build thread for his blue 1300E, stunning).  If you do get it Ray please keep the tan trim this time!

Car is definitely savable and doesn't look rotten although its been laid up since possibly 1995 at least the compound is dry.  As mentioned a check throws the car up as an L model but it has everything to suggest a Ghia, so either someone upgraded an L to Ghia spec or the supplying dealer/DVLA messed up on naming the model at registration time.  My guess is that it is a Ghia if you look closely you can see the clips that were used to hold the side protection mouldings on.  On the colour I'd say this was a 1977 built car that was standing around for some time before being registered. As an educated guess i'd say August 1977.

Out of intrest whats the story with the garages being blocked up for all those years, it seems a strange thing to do.

Not sure why the garages were blocked up. There looks to be smoke damage in there so possibly closed of due to vandalism or crime. Ive been working here for 11 years and only noticed the side door a few months back. Done the forced entry to the door a saw the car. I don't think that thearlier area exists on our systems so if it was not for curiosity I would never have gone in there. Just getting the ball rolling to get the funding for the refurbishment works now and hopefully get the area opened up and the car out.

Again if there is any thing I can look at in particular that would better identify the model ect. let me know and I'll go take a look

most important is either tracing the owner or getting the DVLA to issue a V5

when you are not the owner and apply for a V5, the dvla write to the registered keeper asking them if thats correct, if he or someone on his behalf says no, then you cannot register it

Are you still looking at a year to get the car released from the compound

im not worried about the model, more the fact that i can legally register and own it, as without that certainty, no money can be spent on restoration
