Superspeed/apache/eliminator escort v6

Recommended Posts

Again....not to everyone's taste and to some....a sure way to ruin the nimble escorts appeal....handling!!

But hearing a lot of negativity from people about how it is a "step back", there have been posts made on various forums from people who owned or drove a superspeed v6 escort and completely disagree!!

It would be nice to hear from anyone who has any experience, memories, storeys from back in the day on these rare escorts!

Hello Paul

Have always been fasinated with the Essex V6, .. many underated opinions of the engine and also negativity of the escort V6.. but only from people that have never driven or been in one, the people that have had them and been in them absolutly love them, I have done a lot of research myself.. hanker'd after one since I was 17 and saw one, I then saw an Ad for a Ford Escort 3.0, ZF box and diff etc £3000, wished I had bought it as it was a Superspeed, but I didnt realise at the time :dope:. I am building one now but it is still in Kit form!!

Anyone I know that has had them or been in them say this sort of thing >>

Many many years ago when I was about 16-17 the guy who lived next door to my nan used to own a V6 Superspeed Escort, he took me out in the superspeed a couple of times.
That memory has never left me to this day and im now 50, most amazing car to have been driven in, I used to sit in my nans living room and look out daydreaming about it watching him work on it and I used to go out and plague him with questions on it.
This is without doubt the car that has left the biggest impression on me throughout my whole life.

I cant wait until mine is done

Great to see a thread started about them.. Nice one Paul :-o

Hi Paul,

As Vista suggests, I own an Apache from Jeff Uren's stables: Essex V6 3100.

It's very difficult to find any information on them due to the small number created. Whilst approx 1000 Cortina Savage's were made there were only 50 (ish) Apache's made and only 1700 [ish] cars made in total. I'm only aware of another 3 left in the UK.

Jeff Uren died in 2007. From what information I can gather sometime in the mid eighties when he started up an interior design company a fire broke out resulting in the loss of the majority of the "Race Proved" documentation.

As a car to drive, let's say it's got a "lively" back end. All the weight is in the front. It sounds lovely though and the torque is mental! Pulling off in 4th is no problem whatsoever. I'll get some pictures up

Thanks for reply doktor....I was meaning to message you later this evening. I've seen your escort about on the internet....and heard it running on photobucket vid, it sounds lurvly!!

I would appreciate some pics....engine mounts, manifolds etc!!

I pretty much made my mind up this morning about not stuffing 3 1/2 litres of leylands finest under the bonnet!....there's just something about the sound of an Essex!!

Hi Keith, you may remember me asking you if you wanted to sell you Apache, ... hope all is going well and you are enjoying it? ... the other 3 you are aware of... do you mean Apache's? ... where are they.. how did you find these people then? can you not get them to reply to this thread and maybe contribute to it with pics etc? I do have a lot of pics of V6 escorts to add, can you do your best to get them to respond Keith?

I know there is someone with a Crayford Eliminator too somehwere, I have tried to contact him before but to no avail, (the Eliminator was Crayfords version of Escort mk1 V6, I guess you may know that but it was more for everyone's benift)  Get some pics up for us Keith.. come on you know it makes sense!!:cuddle::P

I spoke quite a few times to a chap who bought a 4 speed V6 superspeed Escort new from John young who was the brains behind SuperSpeed, he said he used to blow away the twin cam escorts in that day, the V6 superspeed Escorts were converted with a V6 from new using a Twin Cam based Escort, I know this sounds criminal nowdays but that was the case, He sent me some pics of it when it was new, it is still about now but with red stripes rather than blue that it had from new.

This was the original brochure that he got when he ordered his S/Speed escort .. note the date on the top in pencil, sadly he didnt want me to have it, it was very sentimental to him, he absolutly loved his car he told me, it is nice that it is still around and has been restored and is being used now.

Superspeed were the 1st to fit the V6 in Escorts and all the others copied them, they even put the V6 in the Capri before Ford done it, they did correspond with Ford and even still gave the Full Ford Warrenty with their Cars

Interesting reading grant! It's a shame the Essex wasn't an all alloy engine....maybe the escort would have had an even more interesting pedigree!! I'll get some pics up of mine next weekend....I've had to bite the bullet and order a pair of inner wings! Strut top repairs were hiding some horrors!!

I wonder if they were based on Twincams, are they worth more as Superspeeds or popping the Twincams back in?

Although rarer than twin cams the twin cam have more of a following so I guess they are more desireable as a twincam, as we know things are worth only as much as people will pay, so with a bigger audience for the twin cam maybe they would fetch better money, but who knows as superspeeds very rarely come up for sale as there are so few left

Met a chap last week who now has a Mk 2 Esc RS1800 (very rare and worth a fortune as you all know) .. anyway we chatted for a good couple of hours, we were talking about the small script on his number plate of the RS, "RS Dealer MIKE YOUNG" it said, anyway I asked him "did you know Mikes brother was John Young the propietor of "SuperSpeed", "Yes he said" and began to tell me a story, he saw a cheap Escort for sale in 1987, it was advertised as a V6, out of curiosity he went to have a look as he loved Escorts and always had Twin Cams back from the age of 18yrs old, anyway when he got there he opened the bonnet to have a look and noticed the odd things that pointed to it being an original Twin Cam, so he bought it, he said he pulled the V6 out, sold it and put a Lotus Twin Cam back in, he then sold the car as a Lotus Twin cam and made a few pennies .. happy Days ... he now realises it was a Genuine SuperSpeed complete with Twin Petrol tanks, although not all original interior etc..he gave me a few Pics I have added below, he sold in 1987 soon after he bought it and converted it back to a Lotus engine... but it hasn't been taxed or sorn since.. maybe it got broken, who knows... >>

Here some Pics of it >>

Whoaa. Glad I found this site. Brings back memories. In 1971 I traded in a trusty Ford Escort Mk1 1300GT  Reg: UCR 955H I had bought from Grays of Guildford and bought a Superspeed Ford Escort Reg: KAN 423K from a garage in Ley Street Ilford Essex called Youngs. It was red and I wish I still had a picture of it. I was only 20 at the time and lived in Alton Hampshire. It was by some margin the fastest Escort for miles and beat just about anything else on the road.  I remember driving up to Santa Pod Drag Raceway on the M1 with a load of mates in the back when a Norton Commando overtook us at 100mph. I put my foot down and to the amazement of the Norton rider ( and just about everyone else) I left them all for standing. I remember getting the speedo up to 150mph in a FORD ESCORT..... Happy Days.. I had gearbox problems after about 18 months and changed it for a Triumph TR6  Reg: MHO 9L from Tourist Trophy Garage in Farnham Surrey. I don't know what happened to the Escort but I found that the TR6 was still road registered back in 2014... I wonder if there are any Superspeed Escorts still in existence... love to see one. It was so basic compared to modern cars but went like stink. I I had my first experience in that car near Frensahm Ponds in Surrey. Today I drive a 10 year old Golf R32 bought since new . Golf R does nothing for me.. but I 'd love to have a drive in that old Ford Superspeed just to remind of days gone by . One of the best fun cars I ever owned...

As its completely finished now, I've had to take some photographs for my insurers to give a guaranteed valuation so thought I'd share with you

I've removed and kept the old basket wave seats. They are in amazing condition so sourced some replacement ones and had them recovered in leather. Same with the dashboard. The original one is in storage and this one recovered in leather

The only "gap" that winds me up is the bonnet. When viewed from the left hand side, it's slightly raised on one side. My OCD goes into melt down!

I started a new thread yesterday about rare and unique models, if you could re-post some of your images and a bit about the cars origins that would excellent and of great interest for that topic.

Hey.. don't worry Rally Pack.. I have just found it Mr Man?

Just in case. I would love those from this thread to contribute to that one with their images and history. You rarely get first hand ownership accounts with some of these rare models and allow people to ask questions what they are like.
