Sweet Mother of God!

Reading the article I am conflicted.... non-standard brakes, aftermarket exhaust, stainless manifold studs mixed with huge attention to detail repassivating the under body nuts and bolts then repainting and super flex bushes. Having attended a few big car auctions this mix of old and new goes against all I have learned.

However I would be well happy with the price.

similarly i seen a mk1 escort on ebay, looks absolutely perfect! its a 1300e I think? beautiful looking and only 27k....

not to out of the ordinary

but it has a 2ltr zetec in it now and stainless exhaust etc etc

I thought that making modern upgrades makes it worth less as it's not original any more??

don't get me wrong it's stunning and most likely well worth the money by the way things are priced. I certainly wouldn't say no if someone offered me it

i was always put off modernising my cortina too much for fear of it being worthless

Why conflicted? This was a very clean, tidy low miles car that has been detailed to a high degree - its not a restoration back to original rather it uses original equipment with modern, reduced maintenance materials - all sensible IMO - decent brake pads, silicone brake fluid, rot free exhaust! The owner obviously wanted a car to use, not a museum piece that gets trailered from show to show in case the tags get worn off the tyres!

I'm not a particular cappa fan although I wouldn't say no to a clean 1600 GT XL, and I wouldn't pay that sort of money for any car, but it was a car to be used and hopefully it will be ?

I agree completely Id rather have modern underpinnings making a car safer more capable etc

I thought that people who wanted / could spend 55k on an 'old' car wanted originals

hence why I only made changes to my car that are easily reversed to standard

Can't really see that been used, it's to good !! Why spend all that time to meticulously restore/ improve then take it down the road where you can gaurantee some re- surfacing has taken place to destroy all the hard work. At even that amount of money unless he got the car for a song he won't have made much, the cost of car originally then for a company to carry out the refurb plus parts wouldn't be a lot left for a profit margin. Museum piece.........I'm also not a Cappa man but it is nice.

Unless its a 2 door gt or Lotus , I would not worry .

4 doors will never command a 'high' price imho

puddy :)

I think naming the car Oscar should devalue it! That said I have been known to call my cars by certain names when Im working on them but Im certain a future buyer wouldn't find it endearing to see that printed in any ad.

For me it depends on what the upgrades are. In a Mk3/4/5 Cortina if someone else has already done a nice job fitting a 5-speed gearbox, vented front discs, tubular manifold, etc. then that's work I don't have to do - so certainly wouldn't devalue the car.

my mk2 mex will be far from original, even with the prices going mad. im building it for me and not really botherd if some clown with too much money says that engine, suspension, axle, roll cage, leather trim, wheels and whatever else they notice aint original.  99% of concourse cars arnt original. theyve had pannels replaced, paintwork done. an unmolested barn find with rot would be more original.

Like you say you build a car for you and no one else. But you will always get some clown saying this and that isn't right, with what you've done to your car I personally don't think it would get mixed up with an attempt at a concourse car so shouldn't have that problem.

I think some of the resellers are taking you guys for a row over there. I was just doing a Google search on Escort Twincams and this was listed as one of the links for the search. I wish I knew how to do screen shots but this is a cut an paste all the same.

Ford escort MK1 Twin cam for sale - Cars for Sale - NewsNow

www.newsnow.co.uk › ... › Twin Ford › Ford escort Twin cam for sale

Ford escort MK1 Twin cam for sale for around £395. We now have 10 ads from 54 sites for Ford escort MK1 Twin cam for sale, under cars for sale.

400 quid for a Twincam so no need to spend 120 grand for a big rear wing and you still get a reasonable classic. Its a UK one though so probably has a bit of rust for that kind of money LOL
