Munch Posted January 27, 2018 Report Posted January 27, 2018 I found a mk1 escort RS2000 listed at a classic car auction last week. The auction was held today. They put a guide price of £8 - 10,000 so I thought I would go and if see if I could buy it. At that price I was prepared to give it a go. It was an unfinished project that was a little rough around the edges, but it was essentially rust free. It was a non runner with no front windscreen, but it had a full interior with a few holes. The pictures on the auction site made it look better than in the flesh, but overall I thought not bad. It had quite a high lot number so I got to see a lot of cars sold, and I don't know why, but the longer I was there, the more I got a feeling that there was no way that the car was going to be sold at any where near the guide price. 4 hours later it finally came up and the bidding started at £8000. Within what seemed seconds it had been sold at £16,200! I didn't either bother trying to bid. I can't quite believe that a car in that condition could be worth that sort of money. What is the general consensus on auctions and what do you think about the real worth of an unfinished project car like that? I understand that these cars in good condition are fetching quite a bit these days but surely for the home mechanic that's too much money, and for a dealer there won't be much of a profit left. Anyway, i'm going to keep searching for the holy grail and hopefully I will find a car soon enough. It was my first visit to an auction and I found it really interesting. A tidy 2.8i Capri sold for £9200 which was a running car. Quite the bargain by comparison!

Guide price I thought was about right maybe another grand considering cond and a non runner. Agree with what you say, at £16500 then there's the tax on top of that ! By the time you've painted it window/ rubbers tyres your on its value. Don't forget if yo want to get I the very high values everything has to be oe and top notch. Your very lucky if you find a viable one these days unless your looking through beer glasses of course !!
Xp197777 Posted January 27, 2018 Report Posted January 27, 2018 Munch I agree 16k is a lot of wedge for a project car but it is a rs2000 having said that you can run away with a lot of money restoring a car nice and a mint restored one could be £30/35 k

They were charging a reasonable 6% which is basically another £1000, plus transporting it home, so the guy that bought it has paid almost £17,500.
eeb43 Posted January 28, 2018 Report Posted January 28, 2018 i had a good look at the rs and it was awful but im surprised it didnt make alot more the front panel i believe was made blindfold by donald duck! the front chassis was mostly filler! i wanted the black anglia but that made £1480 and i wouldnt have dared strap the back wheels incase what was left of the front and back spring hangers fell off!!!!!

mk1del Posted January 28, 2018 Report Posted January 28, 2018 My mates and myself were there, it was absolutely packed first time been there ,two hour trek for us there My mate was hoping to buy the escort didn't even get a bid in, so he bought the avenger tiger, fully restored few year ago, with stacks of paperwork photo restoration file and a few magazines its been in ,mint and on the road, And rarer than escort, used to have avenger gt 2 door even rarer than tiger Long day left home at 8am got back at 8pm ,some of prices were over the top, and 6percent +vat a bit steep

Was that your group? It took me 2 hours to get there as well. That Avenger was a lovely bit of kit, nice buy, well done.

The mk1 had quite a late lot number so I was holding out till then, but I fancied a few of the other Fords like the supercharged mk2 Tina. I may have been tempted otherwise.

No mate weren't us , think a few folk were hoping to get the escort, avenger nice, told my mate he's got to keep it, at least till I've got the money for it lol

For all I know it might have gone round once I've even got an original C45 cassette to go with it that I taped the Top 40 to on a Sunday evening. Ooh for a headrest! Joking aside though, the pics of the auction car show it to be really nice and pretty much standard.
