I thought it may be interesting to start a thread about the various Escort Overriders for both Mk1 and M2 Escorts and possibly identify which type of Overrider goes with which model. I can start off with some of the various Mk2 types but if you know of others please add them. The year model of my Mk1 never actually had Overriders so hope others will be able to contribute images for the various Mk1 types.

Mk2 Type 1

Overrider2.thumb.jpg.a9eca2e95883de6d89d226db63414f91.jpg

This seems to be the most common of the Mk2 Overrriders with less defined sides, often found on Escort Sports, Mexico, Harrier (Front) and Australian Rally Packs.

Type 2

This has a similar over profile to the Type 1 but it has a more defied line on its sides

Im unsure as to the origins of this shape Overrider in the European Escort lineup so possibly someone could chime in. I have only seen it on 2 Australian Rally Pack Cars but both are known to have been replacements for restorations. Possibly they never came out from the factory on any model but were a later spare part replacement design. There would have to be a European origin though as they would not have been made just for the local market.

Type 3

The third type is that seen on Ghias. They have a different profile to the first two types with a flat top and a 90 degree bend to the front. They have a special cut out that permits a snug fit around the plastic strip of the Ghia bumper.

Type 4

This type shares the same profile as that of the Ghia but used on sporting models whose bumpers are usually black and have no plastic strip. These can be found on the rear of Harriers which strangely use the Type 1 for the front and these for the rear. They can be occasionally seen on the rear of some Sports as well.

If you know of any other versions please post your images and information. I look forward to seeing the variety of Mk1 Overriders and the models they can be found on.

I've been keeping an eye on the ones on fleabay for my sport, would appear by the amount of bidding on them a lot of people think the ghia ones are the same as the sport / harrier ones. As you quite rightly shown the rebate for the black trim. Sellers on the dreaded list as fitted to sport / ghia and just to get the extra tax in RS.

Your right we should expand the thread to include all OSF Overriders so they can be seen in one place. We dont have mk1 Fiestas here so I have no knowledge of them so could you guys possible post images of the three Fiesta types you mentioned? It would be a great addition to the thread if you could.

Its ironic how the term "RS Tax" is now in the vernacular.

The new wording on the block is now RS1600/1800. Did they cut short the production line on these models with the amount of parts availiable now showing up on fleabay for these ?????

One seller on Ebay is currently selling two different type Overriders as a pair! They are listed for Ghias which is correct as it has the relief for the bumper protector strip. But they appear to be Ghia versions of Type 1 and 2 listed above

Overrider10cS.thumb.jpg.1e28154401e7d77ed7586c6ff4bc905f.jpg

Overrider10fS.thumb.jpg.c35b5c45fbb631fc8a48f91497614a08.jpg

What that means then is that there are two more types that need to be added to the Mk2 Escort list and rearrange it a bit.

Type 1 and Type 2 remain the same. Ghia with protector strip and smoother sides becomes Type 3. Ghia with protector strip and defined sides becomes Type 4. Rear Harrier/Sport type without protect strip relief and smooth sides becomes Type 5 and Rear Harrier/Sport without protect strip and defined sides becomes Type 6.

If buying these things you need to determine which type you intend to use and not mix and match. It would be interesting to learn if the defined sided Overriders are a year based thing as I suspect it was introduced later than the smoother type.

Could they be like the sport with different front and rear, but more than likely year change as you say.

It would get even more confusing when you have different types front and rear. This is the case on the Harriers but I have seen the same on images of Sports as well since you pointed it out the other day.

So if you use the Type 1 with more rounded sides on the front of your Sport or Harrier, you need to use the Type 5 at the rear. And in turn if you use Type 2 with the defined sides at the front you need to use the type 6 at the rear.

We may need to have a swap and trade thread for Overriders. After one split I bought a replacement but now I have three Type 1s and one Type 2. Everyone may need to group together and trade to get a set!

Very interesting post this.

Im doing a similar thing with Recaro seats.

I have ammased a fair bit of info so far and still learning.

The Idea was to find an alternative source of Recaros to cover with readily available covers (Aldridge). The cost of even shagged Mk2 RS2000 Fishnets is crazy but take a look at other cars that had them fitted and without the RS tax you can get a very good set of seats.

So far I have found a lot of early 80's cars had Recaros and not just Fords, Audi's BMW Mercs had them too.

Also after stripping them down I have also found a passenger seat can be converted to the other side and vise-versa.

Once I have done I will post the info i have greaned, it may help others.

Sorry for the Highjack but kind of related.

As others have suggested to expand this thread to include all OSF like Fiestas and others. I thought I would post a couple that I found and add others I wasn't sure if there are actual differences. Maybe someone could chime in if they know more and add some yourselves.

The first type Im guessing is Supersport as the curved relief of the overrider seem to match that with its unique non protector strip bumper

FiestaOverrider2.thumb.jpg.3b94c2f6dc2df8b69deb3e294d5975a6.jpg

FiestaOverrider2c.thumb.jpg.ea9d7a0907684d677cfb0db8e6a3a185.jpg

FiestaSupersport3.thumb.jpg.1fa9abfa894643fd1dfaf9a8e6db3bd6.jpg

This next type has a similar external profile to the Supersport one but has cutout relief for a protector strip

FiestaOverrider3.thumb.jpg.6a128e288d6b0fc04cf0f3003443ed10.jpg

FiestaOverrider3c.thumb.jpg.d4ad4d972b6f9677ac3f27b8fe39a54e.jpg

FiestaMk1.thumb.png.a05b12cfa871a7b70f032ded862d5e9a.png

Then the next type are the really chunky ones that appear on the XR2 (I couldnt find images of them off a car yet sorry)

FiestaXR2.thumb.jpg.b1431491e0ab72e1ec9c58635763af3f.jpg

There was also these ones which im not sure if they are different images of the second type but they do look longer in the side images but the same in the front images, so someone may be able to tell me if this is a fourth type or just further images of the second

FiestaOverrider1.thumb.jpg.62d2238ea24055d37d6f725cca3cd831.jpg

FiestaOverrider1b.thumb.jpg.66f916938d8a8fdfc9b0d3abe487bcee.jpg

Having not had Mk1 Fiestas on the local market if others in the know could expand and help with my online investigations it would be helpful for this be databased in this thread

(This thread has now been moved to the OSF discussion thread rather than just the Escort one it started in as it now includes other cars)

big bumper XR2

I learned something from this post about Fiesta Overriders is that the strange round vent thing went on top, I just assumed it went to the bottom as some kind of drainage hole or something. It raises the question, what actually is it?

So with some Mk2 Escort overriders proving very illusive to obtain has anyone resorted to using overriders meant for cars like Ghias's and GL's with a bumper protector strip on cars like Sports and Mexicos that dont have that protector strip? Is the little gap left where cutout for the protector strip is that noticeable if that type is used as a substitute instead?

Why not just take the overriders off?

They are and have been for over 20 years. I was hoping to reinstate them for the originality factor.
